Research and Development in the Computer and Information Sciences: [Part] 1. Information Acquistion, Sensing, and Input: A Selective Literature Review

From Introduction: "This report is the first of a series intended to provide a selective overview of research and development efforts and requirements in the somewhat overlapping fields of the computer and information sciences and technologies. The projected series of reports will attempt to outline the probable range of R & D activities in the computer and information sciences and technologies through selective reviews of the literature and to develop a reasonable consensus with respect to the opinions of workers in these and potentially related fields as to areas of continuing R & D concern for research program planning or review in these areas."

Friction and surface damage of several corrosion-resistant materials (open access)

Friction and surface damage of several corrosion-resistant materials

Friction and surface damage of several materials that are resistant to corrosion due to liquid metals was studied in air. The values of kinetic friction coefficient at low sliding velocities and photomicrographs of surface damage were obtained. Appreciable surface damage was evident for all materials tested. The friction coefficients for the combinations of steel, stainless steel, and monel sliding against steel, stainless steel, nickel, Iconel, and Nichrome ranged from 0.55 for the monel-Inconel combination to 0.97 for the stainless-steel-nickel combination; for steel, stainless steel, monel, and tungsten carbide against zirconium, the friction coefficient was approximately 0.47.

The Hydrolysis of Tributyl Phosphate Ad Its Effect on the Purex Process

From abstract: "The rate of hydrolysis of TBP and the effect of the hydrolysis products in the Purex Process have been studied. Hydrolytic conditions may be encountered in the process which would lead to formation of dibutyl phosphoric acid, causing significant losses of tetravalent plutonium in stripping. This situation may be easily alleviated by reducing and stripping the plutonium in the trivalent state."

Surface Studies of Irradiated Graphite (open access)

Surface Studies of Irradiated Graphite

The effects of oxidation and irradiation on the microsurface structure of pile graphite have been investigated by measuring the surface area and pore size distribution of several samples. The results obtained for both oxidized and irradiated graphite samples indicate that changes in surface characteristics which occur are determined by the flux, temperature of irradiation, and gaseous atmosphere in which the radiation takes place.

GenoGraphics for OpenWindows (open access)

GenoGraphics for OpenWindows

GenoGraphics is a generic utility for constructing and querying one-dimensional linear plots. The outgrowth of a request from Dr. Cassandra Smith for a tool to facilitate her genome mapping research. GenoGraphics development has benefited from a continued collaboration with her. Written in Sun Microsystem's OpenWindows environment and the BTOL toolkit developed at Argonne National Laboratory. GenoGraphics provides an interactive, intuitive, graphical interface. Its features include: viewing multiple maps simultaneously, zooming, and querying by mouse clicking. By expediting plot generation, GenoGraphics gives the scientist more time to analyze data and a novel means for deducing conclusions.

An Integrated Miniature Solvent Extraction System for Processing Radioactive Solutions (open access)

An Integrated Miniature Solvent Extraction System for Processing Radioactive Solutions

Abstract: "Because of the radiation hazards inherent in processing large volumes of radioactive solutions by solvent extraction techniques, there is need for a system with small hold-up which can be contained within a minimum of shielding and yet which is versatile enough to be used as a research tool. A system utilizing a miniature mixer-settler has been constructed and its successful operation by remote means demonstrated. The unit is semiportable and employs a number of novel features of value in studying a wide variety of solvent extraction flowsheets. Data on the distribution of nitric acid between water and tributyl phosphate (in kerosene) are included as a demonstration of the operability of the unit."
