Waters of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas: their nature and origin (open access)

Waters of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas: their nature and origin

The 47 hot springs of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, issue from the plunging crestline of a large overturned anticline, along the southern margin of the Ouachita anticlinorium, in the Zigzag Mountains. The combined flow of the hot springs ranges from 750,000 to 950,000 gallons per day (3.29 x 10/sup -2/ to 4.16 x 10/sup -2/ cubic meters per second). The radioactivity and chemical composition of the hot-water springs are similar to that of the cold-water springs and wells in the area. The tritium and carbon-14 analyses of the water indicate that the water is a mixture of a very small amount of water less than 20 years old and a preponderance of water about 4400 years old. The presence of radium and radon in the hot-springs waters has been established by analyses. Mathematical models were employed to test various conceptual models of the hot-springs flow system. The geochemical data, flow measurements, and geologic structure of the region support the concept that virtually all the hot-springs water is of local, meteoric origin. Recharge to the hot-springs artesian-flow system is by infiltration of rainfall in the outcrop areas of the Bigfork Chert and the Arkansas Novaculite. The water moves slowly to …

Intermediate-energy nuclear theory. Progress report, July 1, 1978--June 30, 1979. [Summaries of research activities at Texas A and M Research Foundation]

Research carried out during the contract period by R.A. Bryan, principal investigator, and associates R.B. Clark and B.J. VerWest is investigated. The research has centered on the nucleon--nucleon interaction from threshold up through intermediate energies (T/sub L/ less than or equal to 1 GeV). A major portion of time was devoted to the inelastic channel NN ..-->.. NN..pi.. and has resulted in a peripheral model for this reaction which gives good fits to the world data around 800 MeV. The present status of elastic NN scattering above the ..pi..-production threshold was reviewed extensively, new parameterizations were developed and data bases assembled for analyses of this process. The three point ..pi..NN vertex was studied in the context of the dual Veneziano model where all three particles can be taken off shell. It was shown that this form of off-shell dependence in NN interaction models, hereto ignored, can have important consequences. Finally, initial work was completed in an attempt to use the constituent interchange quark model to constrain the short range behavior of the meson-exchange models of the NN interaction. A list of publications is included.

Silicon ingot casting: heat exchanger method. Multi-wire slicing: fixed abrasive slicing technique. Phase III. Quarterly progress report No. 4, July 1-September 30, 1979

This contract is for casting silicon ingots by the Heat Exchanger Method (HEM) and slicing by multi-wire Fixed Abrasive Slicing Technique (FAST). Significant advancements have been made in the area of crystal casting. It has been demonstrated that nearly single crystal ingots can be cast with a single HEM solidification of upgraded metallurgical grade silicon. The impurities were rejected to the last material to freeze-near the wall of the crucible. The resistivity of the silicon after directional solidification by HEM was 0.1 to 0.2 ..cap omega..-cm. Macroscopic impurities, presumably SiC, did not break down the solid-liquid interface and, in some cases, caused only localised twin formation. This material may be used for making solar cells directly. The HEM process has been scaled up to solidify 22 cm x 22 cm square cross-section ingots weighing up to 10.5 kg. The 22 cm square cross-section ingot is nearly all single crystal material. For silicon slicing using FAST significant progress has been made in demonstrating high throughput of the slicer and extended life of the wires. Cutting rates exceeded 1986 goals by more than 40%. This has been achieved with the combination of high speeds of the slicer and improvement in the blade. …

Human vigilance investigation analysis of the pattern array test (further data analysis). Final report

This report analyzes a test which was designed to help solve problems of human vigilance encountered in a material safeguard system. The test was designed to determine the efficiency of an operator when processing large amounts of information from a video screen over extended periods of time. In the test eight objects, either circles, squares, or triangles, were set in a 5 x 5 matrix which appeared on a video screen. The eight objects were shown for a specified length of time, the screen blanked out for another specified period, then eight objects in the same 5 x 5 matrix were again shown. The observer was tested on his ability to discern changes in patterns and/or symbols from frame to frame. The testees were able to identify changes in pattern easier than changes in symbols.

Photovoltaic power systems market identification and analysis. Final report, January 1977--February 1978

This report summarizes the work done by InterTechnology/Solar Corporation, its consultants, Mobil Tyco Solar Energy Corporation and the University of Delaware Institute for Energy Conversion, and its consultants, during the marketing analysis of near and intermediate term photovoltaic power applications. To obtain estimates of the domestic and foreign market potential for photovoltaically powered devices two approaches were used. First, the study was identifying then screening all possible photovoltaic power supply applications. This approach encompassed the first two tasks of the study: (1) a survey of the current uses of photovoltaic systems, both domestic and international, and a projection of the usage of those systems into the future; and (2) a new idea generation task which attempted to come up with new ways of using photovoltaic power. Second, the study required in-depth analysis of key near-term and intermediate-term photovoltaic applications identified during the first phase to obtain reasonable estimates of photovoltaic market potential. This process encompassed the third and fourth tasks of the analysis: (3) refinement of ideas generated in Task 2 so that certain products/applications could be identified, the product defined and a market survey carried out; and (4) development of a detailed product scenario which forecasts sales, barriers to …

Residential solar energy users: a review of empirical research and related literature (open access)

Residential solar energy users: a review of empirical research and related literature

This report reviews 15 empirical studies of residential solar energy users and related literature on residential solar energy use. The purpose of the review is to summarize and analyze the experiences of residential solar users for helping formulate policies concerning the accelerated commercialization of solar technologies. Four of the studies employed case histories or focus group techniques. The 11 questionnaire studies represented interviews with over 1,600 owners of solar systems. The demographic characteristics of samples are listed and compared; research findings and conclusions are presented. Findings on user satisfaction and system performance, possible reasons for evidence of lacking correlation between them, and implications for consumer protection and future research are discussed. General findings are: (1) systematic research on the experiences of solar users is lacking - much research remains to be done; (2) the reported overall experiences of users has been very positive; (3) user reports indicate that system performance is generally good but there is some evidence that user reports are not accurate measures of actual performance; (4) a need exists for adequate consumer protection; (5) design or installation problems are evidenced in significant numbers of early solar installations; and (6) these problems evidently are resolvable. An annotated bibliography …
