Review of gust model concepts (open access)

Review of gust model concepts

Within the past two years Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) has been associated directly or indirectly with several documents in which the authors set forth their concept of a wind component gust model. In this paper three models, each representing a somewhat different concept, are reviewed. A gust model can be defined as a mathematical model that begins by describing wind fluctuations in terms of discrete events and ends by defining statistics of those events. In the present models, all wind fluctuation is described in terms of either individual wind components with respect to a Cartesian coordinate system at a single point, or volume averages of these wind components.

Man-machine interface for the MFTF (open access)

Man-machine interface for the MFTF

In any complex system, the interesting problems occur at the interface of dissimilar subsystems. Control of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) begins with the US Congress, which controls the dollars, which control the people, who control the nine top-level minicomputers, which control the 65 microprocessors, which control the hardware that controls the physics experiment. There are many interesting boundaries across which control must pass, and the one that this paper addresses is the man-machine one. For the MFTF, the man-machine interface consists of a system of seven control consoles, each allowing one operator to communicate with one minicomputer. These consoles are arranged in a hierarchical manner, and both hardware and software were designed in a top-down fashion. This paper describes the requirements and the design of the console system as a whole, as well as the design and operation of the hardware and software of each console, and examines the possible form of a future man-machine interface.

Technology of the light water reactor fuel cycle (open access)

Technology of the light water reactor fuel cycle

This essay presents elements of the processes used in the fuel cycle steps and gives an indication of the types of equipment used. The amounts of radioactivity released in normal operation of the processes are indicated and related to radiation doses. Types and costs of equipment or processes required to lower these radioactivity releases are in some cases suggested. Mining and milling, conversion of uranium concentrate to UF/sub 6/, uranium isotope separation, LWR fuel fabrication, fuel reprocessing, transportation, and waste management are covered in this essay. 40 figures, 34 tables.
