Face the Music

Recording of Tommy Zwedberg's Face the Music. This piece is made for solo trumpet and tape. The trumpet plays towards the tape without electronic manipulation. The trumpet has also been used as material to make the tape-part which makes a closer connection between both parts. There is also a piano used as concrete material for the tape part. The character of the piece alternates with compactness in the beginning and a peaceful part in the middle. In the end, the piece returns to the character from the beginning of the piece, after having preceded a “tutti” in the tape part. The butch synthesizer and filter tape recorder allow for continuous possibility of transposing.

A Study of the Perception of Dissonance by Undergraduate Music Majors (open access)

A Study of the Perception of Dissonance by Undergraduate Music Majors

This study dealt with the perception of dissonance by male, female, freshman and senior music majors. A test was devised which would show that there is a significant difference in dissonance perception between freshman versus senior and male versus female music majors, utilizing specific excerpts from the musical repertoire. Test item analysis was also employed to determine if a significant difference occurs in each excerpt. It was found that certain excerpts show a significant difference while the means of the combined groups do not. This phenomenon was because of relative uncertainty in response between dissonant ("four") and extremely dissonant ("five") excerpts. The conclusions of the study based upon the hypotheses were the following: 1. Four years in a university environment makes a significant difference in a music major's perception of dissonant sounds in music. 2. The sex of the music major causes no significant difference in the perception of dissonance. Male responses were consistent with female responses within the same class.

An Evaluation of the Music Programs in the Seventh-Day Adventist Academies in the United States (open access)

An Evaluation of the Music Programs in the Seventh-Day Adventist Academies in the United States

The purpose of this study was to survey and evaluate the music programs in Seventh-day Adventist academies in the United States during the 19 75-76 school year. Data were collected by means of a survey form sent to all principals and music teachers in the eighty schools and a music achievement test administered to graduating seniors in twenty-eight randomly selected academies. Although most departments judged the music facilities to be adequate, library materials such as scores, filmstrips, and in-service resources were needed in the majority of schools. One-half of the music programs did not have listening facilities available for classroom use. Comparing achievement test results for graduating seniors in Adventist schools with those of the standardization sample revealed no significant differences. The null hypothesis was rejected, however, when comparing size of school, location of school, type of school (boarding or day), sex of the student, and amount of piano and instrumental experience.
