Music and Music Education in Abilene, Texas, 1881-1911
The purpose of this study is to trace the role of music and music education in Abilene, Texas, from 1881 to 1911. The research presents historical data relative to five categories: Educational music, cultural music, religious music, music of the vernacular, and music merchandising. The study utilizes personal interviews, newspaper files, city directories, local histories, photographs, city and county documents, school documents, minutes of public school board meetings, minutes of meetings of churches, school catalogues, articles in journals, unpublished works, and published books.

String Music
String Music is a composition for string orchestra, percussion, and tape in three movements. The work exploits both traditional and contemporary polyphonic techniques (e.g. imitation, inversion, canon, stretto, fugue, collage). In addition, each movement employs a different musical elementas the focus of organization (timbre, pitch, rhythm/meter). The duration of the entire work is approximately eighteen and a half minutes.

Music for Katurah
Music for Katurah is scored for string quartet, flute, alto flute, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, piano, and two percussion with total duration of approximately nineteen minutes. The work has three movements and uses spatial as well as standard notation. Each movement begins softly, builds gradually to a highpoint, and returns to the soft beginning. Timbral exploration and improvisation are prominent features in this piece. Also, through the use of spatial and standard notation, the piece combines strict rhythms and free rhythms.

Music of Winds, 1976
The composition is in two movements played continuously, and requires approximately eleven minutes for performance. The two movements offer different treatment of similar thematic material. Unifying devices are used in each movement. Instrumentation includes the following: piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two Bb clarinets, F English horn, Bb bass clarinet, two bassoons, two Eb alto saxophones, Bb tenor saxophone, Eb baritone saxophone, two bb trumpets, three F French horns, two trombones, euphonium, tuba, and three percussion.

Music for String Orchestra
Music for String Orchestra is a work of approximately sixteen minutes duration for chamber orchestra. The work is scored for eight first violins, six second violins, four violas, four to six cellos and two to four double basses. The work is in three movements. Movement I is in a large three-part form, movement II a simple three-part form and the last movement is in a large three-part form. The first and last movements are unified by several aspects, while the second movement employs material that is independent of the first and last movements. The main difference between the three movements is that the first and last movements are based on a western music idiom and the second movement is rooted in a Korean music idiom.

Music for Chamber Band
The purpose of the composition of the "Music for Chamber Band" is the creation of an extended work for an ensemble of solo wind instruments are treated as woodwind and brass quartets, with the percussion section, which requires four players, serving a subordinate function. The "Music for Chamber Band" is in three contrasting but thematically interrelated movements. The first movement, entitled "Lament," is marked "Slowly and simply" and has a mournful character. The second movement is fast and vigorous, frequently utilizing cross accents which give the impression of two or more meters performed simultaneously, and is entitled "Dance". The third movement, "Antiphon," is moderate in tempo and relaxed in nature. The form of the work as a whole can be likened to an arch which contains (or is made up of) three smaller arches.

Freshman Music Students' Identification With Expected Tasks in the Music Theory Class as a Relevant Part of Becoming a Musician
The purpose of the study was to investigate freshman music students' identification with expected tasks in music theory class including aural, written, and performance requirements. The second research problem compared students' descriptions with actions in class to determine the presence of role taking (the conscious adherence to a set of behaviors) or role playing (the unconscious assumption of a set of behaviors).

The gypsy in violin music: a lecture recital featuring the music of Kreisler, Ravel, and Sarasate : together with three recitals of music by Bartók, Beethoven, Chausson, Dvořák, Schoenberg, Schubert, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky

"Music for Orchestra and Electronic Tape" is an attempt to combine the instruments of the symphony orchestra with electronic sounds which were pre-recorded on tape. Constellations: For Wind Ensemble and Computer Music
Constellations is a single movement work that explores the color between acoustic instruments and computer generated sounds. It is scored for four flutes (two doubling on piccolos), two oboes, two bassoons, eight B-flat clarinets, two bass B-flat clarinets; two alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone; four trumpets in B-flat, four horns in F; three trombones, bass trombone; two tubas;piano; six percussionists; and contrabass. The duration of the work is nine minutes and twenty-eight seconds. Mapping of stellar constellations provide the primary material for all pitch and harmonic progressions throughout the work. Software synthesis and digital sampling techniques coalesce to produce the computer music on tape.

Music for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble
The first movement material is presented by the ensemble and subsequently developed by the saxophone. A majority of the saxophone passages are supported by the ensemble with unaccompanied solo passages kept to a minimum. This study is a history of the musical activities in the Territory of Oklahoma from 1889 to 1907. Material for this dissertation was gathered from newspapers, books, periodicals, letters, sheet music, concert programs, college catalogues, church records, and photographs. Oklahoma City and Guthrie, the most important cities of the territory, provide the locals for the greater part of the study. These two communities reflect the cultural tastes and activities of the entire territory.

Pitahaya : Stage Music in One Act
The initial intent in regard to the story line for this work was to utilize an authentic Hispanic-Southwestern folk tale. It was found, however, that the predominance of recorded folk tales was lacking in sufficient plot involvement. It was decided therefore, that a plot would be constructed by the composer using Hispanic folk material. Elements of recorded folk tales are used in the story to maintain the folk-like quality. Some of these elements are a mutual respect among family members, an acceptance of superstitious ideas, a dependence upon a person claiming supernatural powers, the embodiment of the devil in a person or animal, and the punishment of the wayward girl by the devil.

B. B. McKinney: a Shaping force in Southern Protestant Music
When, at age forty-nine, B.B. McKinney becae the Music Editor for the Baptist Sunday School Board, he began a career as probably the most influential man in Southern Baptist music, setting in motion the machinery that has made the Southern Baptist church music program among the largest in the nation. After six years with the Board, McKinney was promoted to Secretary of the newly-formed Church Music Department. Through his leadership state conventions were led to employ music secretaries to help train and assist churches with their individual music programs. Besides his continued editorship and composing, he set up, with his associate Hines Sims, the Church Music Training Course, and began the publication of a monthly journal, The Church Musician.

The purpose of the study was to write a history of the professional career of D. O. Wiley as a music educator from 1921 to 1963. To give focus to the career of Wiley, answers were sought to three questions, stated as sub-problems: (1) What were the important events and influences in the professional career of D. O. Wiley as a college/University band director?
