Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria (open access)

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria

From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."

An Ecological Characterization of Coastal Maine (North and East of Cape Elizabeth): Volume 1 (open access)

An Ecological Characterization of Coastal Maine (North and East of Cape Elizabeth): Volume 1

A report regarding a characterization that describes the approximately 4000-mile area of the Maine coast norths and east of Cape Elizabeth. It attempts to clarify the current state of knowledge of this ecosystem by synthesizing and integrating existing biological, physical, and socioeconomic information. It provides information on the natural resources of coastal Maine in an ecological framework designed to guide resource management and coastal planning and to aid in the evaluation of human impacts on the ecosystem.

Portland 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Maine and New Hampshire: Data Release (open access)

Portland 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Maine and New Hampshire: Data Release

From abstract: This data release presents preliminary results of ground water, stream sediment, and stream water reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Portland 10 x 20 quadrangle. Stream sediment and stream water samples were collected from small streams at 1094 sites for a nominal density of one site per 13 square kilometers (five square miles) in rural areas. Ground water samples were collected at 560 sites for a nominal density of one site per 26 square kilometers (ten square miles). Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water and surface water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps. Statistical summaries of data and a brief description of results are given. A generalized geologic map and a summary of the geology of the area are included.

Hydrology of the Little Androscoggin River Valley Aquifer, Oxford County, Maine (open access)

Hydrology of the Little Androscoggin River Valley Aquifer, Oxford County, Maine

Purpose and scope: To gain a better understanding of the ground-water resource available from this aquifer, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Maine Geological Survey, Maine Department of Human Services and the Androscoggin Valley Regional Planning Commission (AVRPC), conducted a study from May 1980 through October 1982. The objectives were to: (1) determine the quantity and quality of water available from the Little Androscoggin River valley aquifer; (2) develop a better understanding of how ground-water moves through the aquifer, and (3) analyze effects of imposed stress on the aquifer.
