Roach joined the Army Air Forces in April, 1943 and had basic training at Sheppard Field, near Wichita Falls, Texas. After basic, he went to Texas Tech in Lubbock for preflight training. When he learned it would take a lot of time to learn to fly and then be assigned to a combat unit, Roach quit flight school and went to aerial gunnery school. After training, he was assigned to a B-17 crew and went overseas in December 1944. Once he reached England, his crew was assigned to the 452nd Bomb Group, 729th Bomb Squadron at Deopham Green, near Attleborough. He flew 17 or 18 combat missions over Germany before the war ended. He returned from Europe to train in B-29s when the Japanese surrendered. Roach was discharged in November, 1945.

Following basic training, he embarked on the Queen Mary and arrived in Glasgow, Scotland on 1 January 1945. He crossed the English Channel to Normandy with the 63rd Infantry Division. When the war ended in Europe, Smith was in Germany training with the 63rd ID for the invasion of Japan. Following the Japanese surrender, he was transferred to the Signal Corps where his responsibilities included maintaining telephone lines along the Autobahn highway during the ensuing twelve months. He was discharged from the Army on July 24, 1946.

He details the work and equipment used in the metal shop. Fulton was discharged in 1940 only to rejoin the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He describes training as a dive-bomber pilot and what it was like to fly a SB-2C Helldiver. Fulton joined VB-14 on the USS Wasp (CV-18) and flew missions over the Philippine Islands. Formosa, and Iwo Jima. He goes into detail describing his mission during the Marianas Turkey Shoot and expresses his frustration with the decisions that led to so many planes having to ditch afterwards. Fulton spent the end of the war as an instructor in Florida. He remained in the reserves and was called back for Korea where he also served as an instructor.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Leonard W. Tate. Tate was born in Perry, Oklahoma 16 May 1918. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve while attending Oklahoma State College. After graduation he reported to midshipman’s school at Columbia University. After completing the four month course, Tate was commissioned and reported to the Amphibious Force at Little Creek, Virginia, where he trained as a boat officer of landing craft. He volunteered for the scouts and rangers program and received four months of intense training. In December 1943 the unit boarded a freighter for Bizerte, Tunisia and reported to the Special Operations Group of the Mediterranean Fleet. The commanding officer was Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. He describes several of the missions the unit made into Italy and his participation in planning for Operation Dragoon. Prior to Dragoon, Tate was reassigned to the Amphibious Force as a scout officer and describes his participation in the invasion.
