Geothermal pumping systems (open access)

Geothermal pumping systems

After successful field testing of a prototype pressurized lubrication system designed to prevent brine intrusion and loss of lubricating oil from the motor and protector sections of electric submersible pumps, a second-generation lubrication system has been designed, fabricated, and laboratory tested. Based on a sensitive downhole pressure regulator, this system is not depth limited and it accurately controls the differential pressure between the motor oil and the external brine. The first production lengths of metal sheathed power cable have been fabricated by Halpen Engineering and delivered to REDA for testing and evaluation. Laboratory tests performed on prototype metal sheathed cable samples have demonstrated the durability of this power cable design. The East Mesa Pump Test Facility is currently being activated for high-horsepower pumping system tests that are scheduled to commence during the first quarter of FY 85. A 300-horsepower REDA pumping system equipped with a pressure regulator controlled lubrication system and a metal sheathed power cable is being fabricated for testing in this unique facility.

Measurement and Correlation of Conditions for Entrapment and Mobilization of Residual Oil: Final Report, January 1981-March 1984 (open access)

Measurement and Correlation of Conditions for Entrapment and Mobilization of Residual Oil: Final Report, January 1981-March 1984

This is the final report of a two-year project which had four major task areas. A substantial portion of work carried out under this project has been reported in detail in journals, the First Annual Report to the Department of Energy or in manuscripts which have been submitted for publication and are available on request. In such cases only major conclusions are reported, along with reference to the detailed accounts. Work is reported for the following 4 major tasks: (1) residual saturation measured by laboratory core flooding (core flooding experiments, contact angle measurements); (2) effect of high pressure gradients on residual oil saturations (capillary number relationships, residual oil flushing at wellbore, electrical resistivities at reduced residual oil saturations); (3) mechanisms of mobilization and entrapment of residual oil (magnitude and detailed structure of residual oil saturations, effect of interfacial tension on the stability of displacement fronts, effect of pore shape on displacement curvatures); and (4) residual oil structure (analysis of blob-size distributions by Coulter counter, changes in residual oil structure with oil recovery). 53 references, 76 figures, 46 tables.

Niland development project geothermal loan guaranty: 49-MW (net) power plant and geothermal well field development, Imperial County, California: Environmental assessment (open access)

Niland development project geothermal loan guaranty: 49-MW (net) power plant and geothermal well field development, Imperial County, California: Environmental assessment

The proposed federal action addressed by this environmental assessment is the authorization of disbursements under a loan guaranteed by the US Department of Energy for the Niland Geothermal Energy Program. The disbursements will partially finance the development of a geothermal well field in the Imperial Valley of California to supply a 25-MW(e) (net) power plant. Phase I of the project is the production of 25 MW(e) (net) of power; the full rate of 49 MW (net) would be achieved during Phase II. The project is located on approximately 1600 acres (648 ha) near the city of Niland in Imperial County, California. Well field development includes the initial drilling of 8 production wells for Phase I, 8 production wells for Phase II, and the possible need for as many as 16 replacement wells over the anticipated 30-year life of the facility. Activities associated with the power plant in addition to operation are excavation and construction of the facility and associated systems (such as cooling towers). Significant environmental impacts, as defined in Council on Environmental Quality regulation 40 CFR Part 1508.27, are not expected to occur as a result of this project. Minor impacts could include the following: local degradation of ambient …

Workshop on hydrologic and geochemical monitoring in the Long Valley Caldera: proceedings (open access)

Workshop on hydrologic and geochemical monitoring in the Long Valley Caldera: proceedings

A workshop reviewed the results of hydrologic and geochemical monitoring in the Long Valley caldera. Such monitoring is being done to detect changes in the hydrothermal system induced by ongoing magmatic and tectonic processes. Workshop participants discussed the need to instrument sites for continuous measurements of several parameters and to obtain additional hydrologic and chemical information from intermediate and deep drill holes. In addition to seismic and deformation monitoring, programs are currently in progress to monitor changes in the discharge characteristics of hot springs, fumaroles, and soil gases, as well as pressures and temperatures in wells. Some hydrochemical parameters are measured continuously, others are measured monthly or at longer intervals. This report summarizes the information presented at the hydrologic monitoring workshop, following the workshop agenda which was divided into four sessions: (1) overview of the hydrothermal system; (2) monitoring springs, fumaroles, and wells; (3) monitoring gas emissions; and (4) conclusions and recommendations.

Potential for a Low-Temperature Geothermal Resource Near Mackay, Idaho (open access)

Potential for a Low-Temperature Geothermal Resource Near Mackay, Idaho

Four water samples were collected from springs in the Mackay, Idaho area to investigate the potential for a direct-heat geothermal resource. The maximum measured temperature was 22 C for a spring south of Mackay. Calculation of the mineral equilibrium relationships in the calcium-bicarbonate water samples indicates that these samples equilibrated with the carbonate reservoir rocks. The temperatures of equilibration suggest that the subsurface temperatures of these water samples are probably no higher than measured surface temperatures.

Shallow magma targets in the western US (open access)

Shallow magma targets in the western US

Within the next few years a hole will be drilled into a shallow magma body in the western US for the purpose of evaluating the engineering feasibility of magma energy. This paper examines potential drilling sites for these engineering feasibility experiments. Target sites high on the list are ones that currently exhibit good geophysical and geological data for shallow magma and also have reasonable operational requirements. Top ranked sites for the first magma energy well are Long Valley, CA, and Coso/Indian Wells, CA. Kilauea, HI, also in the top group, is an attractive site for some limited field experiments. A number of additional sites offer promise as eventual magma energy sites, but sparsity of geophysical data presently prevents these sites from being considered for the first magma energy well.
