Geology and ground-water resources of Oswego County, New York
Purpose and scope: This report describes the relationship between geology and ground-water occurrence in Oswego County and indicates how much ground water is likely to be available in any given area. It is a companion to a series of 29 maps produced during 1978-80^1 to document the surficial deposits in the county's 29 quadrangles and includes a compilation of data on representative wells in each quadrangle.

Hydrology of Salt Walls Creek--A Plains Stream in Southwestern Wyoming
From purpose and scope: The study on which this report is based began during 1975 in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management as part of their Energy Mineral Rehabilitation Inventory and Analysis program. The study was directed toward determining hydrologic processes and their relation to other aspects of the environment in the Salt Wells Creek basin, and how this knowledge might be used in planning for the strip mining of coal.

Origins and Distribution of Saline Ground Waters in the Floridian Aquifer in Coastal Southwest Florida
From introduction: Recognizing the need for comprehensive information about these waters of variable quality, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, investigated their character and distribution in the Mansota and lower Peace Basins (fig. 1). This report presents the results of the study. Principal objectives were to: (1) develop a better understanding of areal water-quality variations, and (2) relate the information developed to the extant concepts of the areal geohydrologic system.

Physical and Hydrologic Environments of the Mulberry Coal Reserves in Eastern Kansas
From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is currently conducting a two-phase investigation designed to provide hydrologic information about the coal-producing area in Miami, Linn, and Bourbon Counties of eastern Kansas (fig. 1). This report presents information to satisfy the objectives of the first phase of the investigation. These objectives are to: (1) assemble and interpret existing hydrologic data; (2) describe the physical and hydrologic environments based on existing data; and (3) determine additional data needed to evaluate the impacts of coal mining on the hydrology of the study area.

Hydrologic Effects of Storing Liquified Sewage Sludge on Strip-Mined Land, Fulton County, Illinois
From introduction: In 1971, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a cooperative study to measure stream discharge, suspended-sediment load, and chemical quality of surface waters draining the project area. In 1976, the study was expanded to include measurement of ground-water levels and quality. The general hydrologic system in the vicinity has been described by Patterson, Fuentes, and Toler (1982).

Map Showing Total Thickness of the "Dakota Sandstone," Montana
From introduction: In 1978 the U.S. Geological Survey began a 4-year study of aquifers in the northern Great Plains. The purpose of this map, which is a product of that study, is to show the total thickness of the "Dakota sandstone" (drillers' term).

Digital-Transport Model Study of the Potential Effects of Coal-Resource Development on the Ground-Water System in the Yampa River Basin, Moffat and Routt Counties, Colorado
From abstract: Large increases in coal mining currently (1979) taking place in the Yampa River basin are expected to continue during the 1980's and may adversely impact both the ground-water and surface-water quality in the basin. One potential source of adverse impact is the dissolution of soluble minerals contained in the overburden material disturbed during the mining. This potential impact was investigated using digital ground-water transport-modeling techniques.

Hydrologic Characteristics of Surface-Mined Land Reclaimed by Sludge Irrigation, Fulton County, Illinois
From introduction: This report contains a general description of the hydrology of the project site, summaries of the data collected during 1971 to 1978, and discusses some of the factors affecting the hydrology of the site. This information and the water-level contour map (Fuentes and Patterson, 1979) will be helpful in designing an effective ground-water monitoring program and will provide baseline hydrologic information from which future changes can be detected.

Streamflows and Channels of the Green River Basin, Wyoming
From introduction: One purpose of this study was to describe streamflows of the Green River and its tributaries. In addition to describing the cause and occurrence of streamflows in the study area, a brief discussion of how streamflow data are collected and summarized is presented as background information to users of this report who may be unfamiliar with streamflow measurement. The second and primary purpose of this study was to describe hydraulic characteristics of streams in the study area.

Hydrologic-Information Needs for Oil-Shale Development, Northwestern Colorado
From purpose: The purpose of this report is to summarize existing hydrologic information in the Piceance basin, to describe types of needed information, to suggest methods of obtaining needed information, and to outline standards for collection. The report also will provide guidance for comprehensive integrated hydrologic studies that will be necessary for water-resource planning in oil-shale development. These studies should provide hydrologic understanding that will benefit all aspects of water-resource and oil-shale development in the region.
