SDG and E and ERDA Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility. Bimonthly report, March-April 1977
The Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility was shut down in March, 1977, for the refurbishment of the facility and the injection well. Heavy scaling, which occurred in the facility brine systems as well as in the injection well, necessitated periodic plant shutdowns and cleanings. Various means of scale cleaning and controls were accomplished and evaluated for cost effectiveness. Initial indications showed that operations were satisfactory. Initial operational stability, and heat and mass balance testing of the Geothermal Loop Experimental Facility (GLEF) were accomplished. Operational stability was demonstrated but heat and mass balance test data were not satisfactory primarily due to off design facility operation. Testing was also hampered by pump failures, injection strainer cleaning difficulties and instrumentation problems.

Attitudinal survey of citizens in a potential Gulf Coast geopressured-geothermal test-well locality. Final report
The results of a mail survey used to tap the opinions of the public at large in the study area are described. Attention in that section is focused on awareness of the resource, favorability toward the impending development, concerns about the development, attitudes regarding how the development should take place, levels of community satisfaction, and perceived future problems due to community growth. An analysis is given of the 33 interviews conducted with local representatives of the financial and commercial sectors, government, industry, agriculture, and environmental groups. The main foci here are perceived problems and benefits associated with geothermal development and the local capacity for coping with strains on community services resulting from any population growth which may be generated by resource development. A comparison and synthesis of the results from the general survey and the sector interviews is included. In conclusion, policy recommendations are made for means through which to consolidate goals and to achieve resource development objectives with minimal antagonism of and problems for local citizens and community sectors.

Study of treatment methods for geothermal fluids. [Review of methods used to control scaling and corrosion, current research programs, and recommendations]
A study of methodology used to control geothermal scaling and corrosion is presented. The information used for this study was screened from the geothermal, oil and gas, wastewater disposal, and boiler water treatment industries. This information was evaluated and the current state of knowledge and methodology concerning the treatment of geothermal brines to control scaling and corrosion in geothermal electric power production was assessed. Currently, geothermal scale in pipes and wells is removed by physical or chemical methods. There is a growing effort to develop methods for controlling scale formation for both fresh and spent brines, including pH adjustment and application of an electrical potential for fresh fluids, and coagulation to treat spent fluids. Current methods of corrosion control center around planned replacement of piping and other plant components, with efforts focused primarily on development of materials with improved corrosion resistance. Recommendations for additional work include the following: (1) chemical and physical characterization of brine and scale compositions; (2) basic data on the mechanism of scale formation and the effects of inhibitors; (3) development of instrumentation to monitor geothermal brine constituents; (4) correlation of laboratory results with field test data, and (5) screening of currently available commercial inhibitors for application …

Geothermal R and D project report, October 1, 1976--March 31, 1977
Testing and analysis on the three deep geothermal wells in Raft River and the two shallow (1200 ft) wells in Boise, plus the experiments leading to improved technology and lower cost for electricity produced from 300/sup 0/F wells are covered. Non-electric direct heat uses of geothermal, to as low as 100/sup 0/F also receive special attention. Appendix A contains a paper: ''Evaluation and Design Considerations for Liquid-Liquid Direct Contact Heat Exchangers for Geothermal Applications.'' Appendix B is a summary of the Freon-113 experiment results. (MHR)
