Commercial scale demonstration enhanced oil recovery by miceller-polymer flooding. M-1 project: facilities report

ERDA and Marathon Oil Company contracted together for a commercial scale demonstration of enhanced oil recovery by the Maraflood (TM) oil recovery process. This M-1 Project is located within Sections 15, 16, 21 and 22, T6N, R13W, Crawford County, Illinois, encompassing approximately 407 acres of Robinson Sand reservoir developed in the first decade of the century. The area covers portions of several waterfloods developed on 10-acre spacing in the 1950's that were approaching their economic limit. This report describes all M-1 Project facilities, how they were prepared or constructed, their purpose and how they operate: (1) wells (drilling and completion); (2) production facility; (3) injection facility; and (4) various service systems required during project development and/or operation. (48 fig, 7 tables) (DLC).

Commercial scale demonstration, enhanced oil recovery by micellar-polymer flooding. M-1 project, design report

Activities in a commercial scale demonstration of enhanced oil recovery by the Maraflood process are reported. The project is situated in southeastern Illinois near the town of Robinson. This location is in Crawford County, approximately 50 miles southwest of Terre Haute, Indiana. The M-1 Project reservoir is a classic example of deposition by a meandering river with migrating point bars. Sand thickness varies from zero feet on the eastern edge of the project to about 60 feet in the center. Both multiple sand bodies stacked one above another and isolated sand lenses, found above and below the main sand, occur in the M-1 Project. Streamline and flood front modeling work have been done for the M-1 Project using a steady-state flow, unit mobility, piston-like displacement computer model. This work was used to estimate the pore volume for all patterns, including unconfined asymmetrical patterns, and to evaluate the effects of water injection at the project periphery. Data input to the streamline model included a net sand isopach and an isoporosity map, both generated during this study. One conclusion reached from the streamline modeling work was that peripheral water injection will aid project confinement and decrease the amount of process fluids required …

Geologic characteristics of a portion of the Salton Sea geothermal field (open access)

Geologic characteristics of a portion of the Salton Sea geothermal field

The examination of drill cuttings and core samples from the Magmamax Nos. 2 and 3 and Woolsey No. 1 wells indicate that the sequence of sedimentary rocks in the Salton Sea geothermal field from the surface to below 4000 ft can be divided into three categories: cap rock, unaltered reservoir rocks, and hydrothermally altered reservoir rocks. The cap rock extends from the surface to a depth of approximately 1100 ft in all three wells. There is evidence to suggest that the cap rock has undergone self-sealing through time as a result of the circulation of hot brine through the rocks. Essentially unaltered reservoir rocks extend from a depth of 1100 ft to approximately 3000 ft. The mineralogical and textural changes that occur at depth can be attributed to the process of hydrothermal alteration. Alteration has occurred in a chemically open system and the important variables in the alteration scheme have been temperature, permeability, brine composition, and rock composition. The transition from unaltered to altered reservoir rocks is marked by the replacement of calcite by epidote. The first appearance of epidote correlates reasonably well with the top of the alteration zone as determined in other studies by electric log analysis. Biotite …

Investigations on the geopressure energy resource of southern Louisiana

Eight large geopressured aquifers have been located and mapped. In addition 55 prospective areas have been identified from the sand count and pressure maps which warrant further study. Work on the following is reviewed: data acquisition; data storage, retrieval, and analysis; computer map presentation of data; and detailed geologic mapping. (MHR)

Economic Study of Low Temperature Geothermal Energy in Lassen and Modoc Counties, California (open access)

Economic Study of Low Temperature Geothermal Energy in Lassen and Modoc Counties, California

The feasibility of using low cost, low temperature geothermal energy in job-producing industries to increase employment and encourage economic development was investigated. The study, encompassing all of Lassen and Modoc Counties, was to be site-specific, referencing candidate geothermal applications to known hot wells and springs as previously determined, or to new wells with specific characteristics as defined in the Scope of Work. The emphasis was to be placed on economically practical and readily achievable applications from known resources. Although both positive and negative findings were found in specific areas of investigation, it is felt that the overall long term prognosis for geothermal energy stimulus to industry in the area is excellent. The applications studied were; greenhouse heating, kiln drying, onion dehydration, feedlots, and aquaculture.

Economic study of low temperature geothermal energy in Lassen and Modoc counties, California

The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using low cost, low temperature geothermal energy in job-producing industries to increase employment and encourage economic development. The study, encompassing all of Lassen and modoc Counties, was to be site-specific, referencing candidate geothermal applications to known hot wells and springs as previously determined, or to new wells with specific characteristics as defined in the Scope of Work. The emphasis was to be placed on economically practical and readily achievable applications from known resources, thus complimenting the recently completed ERDA-Susanville Study where a designated community was used as a ''laboratory'' in which land-use planning, institutional aspects, geological assessments, technical modeling and socioeconomic impacts were all examined in overview. During the course of the study, monthly progress reports were prepared and reviewed with the Commission so that emphasis on particular features of study could be changed as necessary to reflect updated findings and to redirect efforts into additional areas of potential promise as they became apparent. In this manner, a degree of flexibility was maintained which allowed a more comprehensive study than would have been otherwise possible. Although the report generates both positive and negative findings in specific areas of investigation, …
