Scope and Purpose of Work: The quadrangle was mapped as part of the U.S. Geological Survey program of classifying and evaluating lands in the Public Domain. Mineral rights for coal had been retained in parts or all of Tps. 2 and 3 N., Rs. 77, 78, and 79 W. These areas are in part underlain by sedimentary rocks of Late Cretaceous(?) and early Tertiary age (Middle Park Formation), and in North Park these rocks are called the Coalmont Formation and contain coal. The chief purpose of the work was to map and study any coal beds found and to make a detailed geologic map that can be used as part of a geological atlas of the United States.

Abstract: Numerous environmental processes affect the development and stability of playa (lakebed) surfaces. Of special significance are hydrologic processes that control the amount and flow of both surface and ground water, and climatic variations which in turn influence the hydrology. This report, in six parts, examines some aspects of the playa surface environment. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 describes microrelief changes that developed at Harper Playa, California, following flooding of the playa in 1965-66. Chapter 3 documents a subsurface hydrologic investigation at Rogers Playa, California. The investigation revealed that the piezometric surface has lowered into sand layers beneath the surface, and it may explain why giant desiccation fissures have formed in the surface clays. Chapter 4 describes an investigation of seven Australian playas and suggests that Australia did not undergo a pluvial period like that of the western United States. Chapter 5 describes three kavirs (playas) in northern Iran and indicates that former lakes did exist there, but not to the same extent as in the western United States. From abstract: For Project Gnome, part of the Plowshare Program to develop peaceful uses for nuclear energy, a nuclear device was detonated December 10, 1961, underground in rack salt of the Permian Salado Formation southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The Geological Survey's investigations on behalf of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission provided basic geologic and geophysical information needed to define preshot and postshot geologic and hydrologic conditions at and near the site. This report describes the geology of the site, some physical and chemical properties of the rocks, and the known effects of the nuclear detonation on the rocks of the site.

Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines discussing copper leaching in the Western United States. As stated in the introduction, "the purpose of this report is to describe and discuss the different leaching and recovery methods currently employed in the production of copper from low-grade ores in the Western states" (p. 1). This report includes tables, illustrations, and photographs.

From Abstract: "The Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Compression Process (VFVC) was evaluated during the period from February, 1965, through March, 1967, by Colt Industries Inc. under O.S.W. Contract No. 14-01-0001-532." From Process Description: "The primary principles involved for converting of sea and brackish water to fresh water in the VFVC Process are rather well known in physical chemistry and are summarized below. The principles discussed above, applied to a practical VFVC desalting system, are illustrated in the schematic flow diagram, Figure 3. This simplified diagram shows both the essential components of the process and the flow paths of the various fluids in the system. A typical mass and heat balance is shown in Figure 4."

From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey has selected and assembled sets of photographs that illustrate numerous types of geologic features in the United States. This catalog lists these special sets of photographs that are available for purchase and describes the features illustrated. It covers the history and economics of the process; the chemical aspect of hydrogenation of coal, tar, and middle oil; the engineer aspect of converting coal and tar to liquid fuels, principally gasoline; and the equipment of the process."

Report meant to promote health and safety in tunneling and related operations. All precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed from investigations of fatal or serious accidents and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards.

From purpose and scope: The Justice Department and the AEC embarked upon this joint study so as to provide the basis for preparation and consideration of guidelines for the nuclear industry best designed to foster vigorous growth and to provide a sound basis for government action.

From Introduction and Summary and Conclusions: "The disposal of the effluents from large desalination plants has been studied for two years by the Dow Chemical Company and Texas A. & M. University under contract to the Office of Saline Water. Recommendations are presented on the type, frequency, and intensity of pre-plant oceanographic and biological surveys and of post-plant monitoring and verification surveys."

Report that "presents the results of an engineering study of the design and economics of a single purpose gas tubine powered vapor compression cycle seawater desalting plant." (p. 1)

As stated in the abstract, "this publication summarizes the literature on the composition of petroleum, with special emphasis on naphtha and gas oil, and provides a source book for the known qualitative and quantitative facts on crude oil composition" (p. 1). Report investigating concrete for use in a sea water desalination plant. Concretes containing both natural and limestone aggregates were tested under the temperature, pressure, salinity, and structural stress conditions that could be expected in such a plant.

Report presenting the National Bureau of Standards' research program designed to determine and explain acid-base behavior in aprotic organic solvents and to develop methods and reference materials for determining total acid and base content and relative strengths of acids and bases in the media.
