Report on Progress of Investigations of Mineral Resources of Alaska in 1904 (open access)

Report on Progress of Investigations of Mineral Resources of Alaska in 1904

From letter of transmittal: The report contains fourteen papers, prepared by ten members of the geologic corps, who have been engaged in Alaskan investigations during the last year. In this report an attempt has been made to summarize the economic results of last season's field work. Geologic matter has been entirely excluded, except where it has a direct bearing on the subjects under discussion. While such a report can have no permanent value, other than as a record of mining conditions during the year, it is believed that its prompt publication will help the mining industry of Alaska.

Mineral Industry of Alaska in 1938 (open access)

Mineral Industry of Alaska in 1938

From introduction: The presentation of a yearly record of the Alaska mineral industry is a continuing service that has been rendered by the Geological Survey from almost the earliest years of extensive mining in Alaska, and the present report, for 1938, is the thirty-fifth of this series. 2 Such a record, especially when supplemented by the statistics for the preceding years, not only affords an authoritative summary of current 'and past conditions but also indicates trends that are of significance in suggesting the lines along which future developments of the industry are likely to proceed. These reports therefore serve miners, prospectors, and businessmen concerned with Alaska affairs as useful historical records, statements of contemporary conditions, and starting points on which some conjectures concerning future operations may be predicated.

Mineral Resources of the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area, Lewis and Clark County, Montana (open access)

Mineral Resources of the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area, Lewis and Clark County, Montana

From abstract: A mineral resource survey was conducted in 1987 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to evaluate mineral resources (known) and mineral resource potential (undiscovered) of the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area (MT-075-111) in Lewis and Clark County, Montana. The only economic resource in the study area is an inferred 1.35-million-ton reserve of decorative stone (slate); a small gold placer resource is subeconomic. A high resource potential for decorative slate exists directly adjacent to the area of identified slate resource and in the northeastern part of the study area. The rest of the study area has a low potential for decorative slate. The westernmost part of the study area has a moderate resource potential for copper and associated silver in strata-bound deposits in green beds and limestone; potential is low in the rest of the study area.

Mineral Industry of Alaska in 1935

From introduction: The record of the Alaska mineral industry for 1935, here presented, is supplemented by records for earlier years, because in that way certain trends may be recognized which are not only of historical significance but are also useful in suggesting the course that the industry is likely to take in the future. This is a continuing service that has been rendered by the Geological Survey from almost the earliest years of active mining in Alaska, and the present report is the thirty-second of the series.

Quicksilver Deposits Near the Little Missouri River, Pike County, Arkansas

From introduction: In this study the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, cooperated. The author prepared detailed geologic maps showing the surface topography, geology, and workings of 11 mines, and the underground workings and geology of 7 of these; the Bureau of Mines engineers directed diamond-drilling and.bulldozer-trenching. The locations of the detailed maps are shown on plate 23, an index map overprinted on a segment of the map made by Reed and Wells.

Mineral Resources of the Clover Mountains Wilderness Study Area, Lincoln County, Nevada

From abstract: At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, approximately 84,165 acres of the Clover Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-139) was evaluated for mineral resources (known) and mineral resource potential (undiscovered). In this report, the area studied is referred to as "the wilderness study area" or simply "the study area;" any reference to the Clover Mountains Wilderness Study Area refers only to that part of the wilderness study area for which a mineral survey was requested by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The study area is located in southern Nevada, in Lincoln County, about 90 mi northeast of Las Vegas. No identified mineral resources exist inside the study area, although gold, silver, and copper resources are found immediately to the west at the Pennsylvania mine.

Past Lode-Gold Production from Alaska (open access)

Past Lode-Gold Production from Alaska

From abstract: This report presents an analysis of the statistical records of the Geological Survey regarding the production of lode gold from the Territory of Alaska for the period 1882 to 1937, inclusive. During that time lode gold to the value of $172,368,000 had been mined. The history of the discovery of lode gold and the early developments in lode-gold mining in each of the various districts is outlined briefly, and the production of lode gold in each of the geographic subdivisions is tabulated fully for each year, as far as the records and the practices of the Geological Survey permit.

From abstract: The Coal Canyon (UT-060-1000), Spruce Canyon (UT-060-100D), and Flume Canyon (UT-060-100B) Wilderness Study Areas are in the Book Cliffs in Grand County, eastern Utah. Demonstrated coal reserves totaling 22,060,800 short tons, and demonstrated subeconomic coal resources totaling 39,180,000 short tons are in the Coal Canyon Wilderness Study Area. Also, inferred subeconomic coal resources totaling 143,954,000 short tons are within the Coal Canyon Wilderness Study Area. No known deposits of industrial minerals are in any of the wilderness study areas. All three of the wilderness study areas have a high resource potential for undiscovered deposits of coal and for undiscovered oil and gas.

Mineral Resources of the Medicine Lodge, Alkali Creek, and Trapper Creek Wilderness Study Areas, Big Horn County, Wyoming

From introduction: This report presents an evaluation of the mineral endowment (identified resources and mineral resource potential) of the study area and is the product of several separate studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Identified resources are classified according to a modification of the system described by McKelvey (1972) and the USBM and USGS (1980), which is shown in the Appendix. Identified resources are studied by the USBM. Mineral resource potential is the likelihood of occurrence of undiscovered metals and nonmetals, industrial rocks and minerals, and of undiscovered energy sources (coal, oil, gas, oil shale, tar, and geothermal sources). It is classified according to the system of Goudarzi (1984) and is shown in the Appendix. Undiscovered resources are studied by the USGS.

Mineral Resources of the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study Area, Grand and San Juan Counties, Utah

Abstract: The Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-140A) consists of 12,635 acres in Grand and San Juan Counties, Utah. The study area has inferred subeconomic resources of potash and halite in the subsurface, and sandstone on the surface. The study area has high potential for undiscovered resources of oil and gas, low potential for undiscovered uranium, copper, vanadium, gold, silver, other metals, and geothermal energy, and unknown potential for the rare-earth mineral, braitschite. There is no resource potential for potash or halite (beyond the previously mentioned inferred resources) or for coal.

From abstract: The area in the vicinity of the West Fork of the Chulitna River, Alaska, one of those examined in 1931 in connection with the study of mineral resources in districts tributary to the Alaska Railroad, contains numerous prospects but, as yet, no productive mines. Its placer deposits are negligible but some of its lodes may prove valuable for gold and silver and perhaps also for copper and arsenic.
