Geothermal water and gas: collected methods for sampling and analysis. Comment issue. [Compilation of methods] (open access)

Geothermal water and gas: collected methods for sampling and analysis. Comment issue. [Compilation of methods]

A collection of methods for sampling and analysis of geothermal fluids and gases is presented. Compilations of analytic options for constituents in water and gases are given. Also, a survey of published methods of laboratory water analysis is included. It is stated that no recommendation of the applicability of the methods to geothermal brines should be assumed since the intent of the table is to encourage and solicit comments and discussion leading to recommended analytical procedures for geothermal waters and research. Study of core chips from the State of California, Well No. 1 in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field using petrographic, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques (open access)

Study of core chips from the State of California, Well No. 1 in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field using petrographic, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques

Rock chips from depths of 1380 to 1478 m from the State of California Well No. 1 in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field were examined using conventional petrographic, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Mineral composition, pore configuration and the nature of the fine-grained matrix materials were determined.

Investigation and definition of parameters associated with testing geopressure water: An Interim Report, June 1, 1975--August 31, 1976 (open access)

Investigation and definition of parameters associated with testing geopressure water: An Interim Report, June 1, 1975--August 31, 1976

Prior to the initiation of this project, considerable literature had appeared in technical journals, particularly geological journals, describing the potential value of the energy contained in hot geopressured waters along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. The geographic region of interest was identified as the area between Brownsville and Pensacola, approximately 200 miles wide and 750 miles long and therefore containing about 150,000 square miles of surface area. The resource was estimated as lying at depths between 5,000 and 25,000 feet. Although many descriptions of this resource had been written, not much experimental data were available regarding the actual analyses of these waters, especially the methane content. ERDA Geothermal division sponsored the current project to find out the precise analysis of the waters in the geopressured zone in a specific South Louisiana shut in gas well. This information was desired as a prelude to additional resource development projects. If the experimental results of this project were negative, doubts would be raised that there should be serious attempts at other development projects. If the results were positive (i.e., the waters were saturated with methane suggested by hydrogeological theory of this region) then ERDA would feel encouraged to proceed with larger scale …

Study of geothermal prospects in the western United States (open access)

Study of geothermal prospects in the western United States

The commercial development potential of 13 underdeveloped geothermal prospects in the Western United States has been examined and the prospects have been ranked in order of relative potential for development on the basis of investment considerations. The following were considered in the ranking: geotechnical and engineering data, energy market accessibility, administrative constraints, and environmental and socio-economic factors. The primary ranking criterion is the unit cost of energy production expected from each prospect. This criterion is obtained principally from expected reservoir temperatures and depths. Secondary criteria are administrative constraints, environmental factors and the quality of the geotechnical data. The Roosevelt, Utah, prospect ranks first in development potential followed in order by Beowawe, Nevada; Coso Hot Springs, California; Long Valley, California; and Brady's Hot Springs, Nevada.

Environmental Sciences Division. Annual progress report for period ending September 30, 1975 (open access)

Environmental Sciences Division. Annual progress report for period ending September 30, 1975

The energy crisis and creation of ERDA were dominant factors affecting the activities of the Environmental Sciences Division during the past year. Efforts primarily centered on coal conversion effluents, aquatic effects from power plants, terrestrial modeling of both radioactive and nonradioactive waste transport, mineral cycling, forest management, and information handling codes and techniques. A bibliography of publications, presentation, these, and other professional activities is included. (PCS)

Feasibility of a MHD generator as a transmitter for electromagnetic sounding of the earth. [Mathematical models] (open access)

Feasibility of a MHD generator as a transmitter for electromagnetic sounding of the earth. [Mathematical models]

Development of a high-intensity source for use in time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) soundings would permit investigation of geothermal systems to much greater depth than is now possible with controlled-source methods. The development of such a source is critically dependent upon a powerful, mobile generator. Magnetohydrodynamic pulse generators satisfy the weight and power requirements for such a generator. However, existing MHD generators which are used in geophysical applications are solid fueled, and therefore, very expensive to operate. Moreover, the pulse length from such a generator is limited to about 10 seconds, which may be too short to permit the maximum advantage to be gained from the available power. The shortcomings of the MHD generator will be remedied in a liquid-fueled generator now under development for the U.S. Air Force. A field program designed to compare available conventional and MHD generators would provide the necessary information for final generator selection, as well as an abundance of information on the nature of geothermal systems at depth. Operation and cost studies on MHD generators are given, and model calculations for TDEM soundings of geothermal hot-dry-rock systems are presented.
