Uranium in the Southern United States (open access)

Uranium in the Southern United States

From introduction: In this study on raw material sources of uranium the Southern Interstate Nuclear Board has catalogued all known occurrences of uranium and some references to thorium in a 17-state area (P1. 1). These occurrences have been evaluated as potential sources of uranium by the State Geological Surveys and the consultant group of SINB. Favorability guides have been applied to the known occurrences and recommendations have been made for future action by the states involved, federal agencies, or by industry. State recommendations are included in state-by-state summaries. The state reports were written either by personnel of the State Geological Surveys or were abstracted from State geological survey data by members of the consultant group...The purpose of this study was to compile information on and systematically assess uranium and other radioactive occurrences in the region. The SINB undertook the project because of its statutory, interstate capability as an extension of government in each of the 17 states, an arrangement that lends itself effectively to this cooperative undertaking.

Hydrology of the Albemarle-Pamlico Region, North Carolina -- a Preliminary Report on the Impact of Agricultural Developments (open access)

Hydrology of the Albemarle-Pamlico Region, North Carolina -- a Preliminary Report on the Impact of Agricultural Developments

From abstract: Extensive agricultural land clearing and drainage operations underway in a 650 square mile part of the Albemarle-Pamlico region--a 1,634 square mile peninsula in North Carolina lying between Albemarle Sound on the North and the Pamlico River on the south--are changing the hydrology of the area. The artificial drainage system being constructed in the region, although it will probably result in only a slight modification of the natural annual evatranspiration, overland runoff, and ground-water discharge, will likely result in several important problems.

Preliminary Study of the Uranium Potential of the Dan River Triassic Basin System, North Carolina and Virginia (open access)

Preliminary Study of the Uranium Potential of the Dan River Triassic Basin System, North Carolina and Virginia

From summary: A preliminary geologic investigation was conducted to determine the uranium potential of the Triassic strata in the Dan River basin system (Dan River, Danville, and Davie County Triassic basins) of North Carolina and Virginia. The pre-Triassic Inner Piedmont basement rocks adjacent to the basins were investigated as potential sources of uranium. Outcrops of Triassic and basement rocks were examined and measured for surface radioactivity by scintillometer. Representative rock and saprolite samples were collected for laboratory analyses.

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria

From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."
