Hydrology and Water Quality in the Nederlo Creek Basin, Wisconsin, Before Construction of Two Water-Retention Structures

From introduction: This study was begun in 1967 in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of natural Resources (DNR)--its purpose was to evaluate the effects of construction of a reservoir and a floodwater-retention structure on the hydrologic system and water quality in a small basin in southwestern Wisconsin. In 1968, Federal research funds were obtained to provide for more detailed study of water quality and to extend the scope of the study to include aquatic biota.

National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Eau Claire Quadrangle, Wisconsin and Minnesota

Purpose and scope: The Eau Claire Quadrangle, Wisconsin and Minnesota, was evaluated to identify geologic units and delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits. All geologic environments to a depth of 1500 m (5,000 ft) were evaluated by means of surface investigations and available subsurface data. Each environment was categorized as favorable, unfavorable, or unevaluated for uranium deposits based on recognition criteria contained in the study of significant uranium districts worldwide (Mickle and Mathews, eds., 1978). Evaluation of the Eau Claire Quadrangle was conducted by Golder Associates, Inc., under subcontract to Bendix Field Engineering Corporation (BFEC), for the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program, managed by the Grand Junction Office of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The evaluation program began February 1, 1978, and ended February 1, 1980. Time spent by Golder personnel on literature search, field work, evaluation of data, and preparation of the final report totaled approximately 3.5 man-years.

Grain Farming in the Corn Belt with Live Stock as a Side Line (open access)

Grain Farming in the Corn Belt with Live Stock as a Side Line

"This bulletin is written to suggest to the corn-belt farmer of the Middle West -- especially the farmer whose soil has been run down by continuous grain farming -- some ways of coordinating and 'cashing in' the scientific advice offered him in hundreds of bulletins already published.... Briefly, these are the conclusions reached by our most successful corn-belt farmer and agricultural experts: To make a money-maker of a farm that has become a losing proposition through steady grain farming you must in addition to raising standard grain crops -- (1) Grow legumes, (2) Raise live stock as a side line, (3) Keep accounts of receipts and expenditures, (4) Mix horse sense with scientific agriculture, (5) Try to secure enough capital to enable you to farm right, (6) Stick to whatever policy you adopt long enough to try it out, and (7) Confer with your County Agent and make a careful study of the bulletins of the United States Department of Agriculture." -- p. 1-3.

Pre-Cambrian Rocks of the Lake Superior Region: A Review of Newly Discovered Geologic Features, with a Revised Geologic Map (open access)

Pre-Cambrian Rocks of the Lake Superior Region: A Review of Newly Discovered Geologic Features, with a Revised Geologic Map

From abstract: Detailed knowledge of the geology of the pre-Cambrian rocks of the Lake Superior region has been greatly augmented since the publication of Monograph 52 by the United States Geological Survey in 1911. The authors have attempted in the present report to assemble as much of this new information as possible, and to give the reader a birdseye view of the geology as seen in the light of all studies made there up to the present time. Detailed descriptions are not presented, and the emphasis is placed upon the major problems of correlation. A revised map of the region, with cross sections, accompanies the report, bringing up to date a knowledge of the areal geology of the region, which otherwise could be gained only by consulting some 150 maps contained in almost as many separate local reports, many of which are unpublished.

Outputs include outflow from the lake into Murphy Creek (70 percent), evotranspiration from the lake and wetland (26 percent), and ground-water outflow (4 percent).
