Maximum Accelerators Caused by Underground Nuclear Explosions in the Oak Spring Formation in Area 12 of the Nevada Test Site at Distances of 5 to 300 Kilometers: a Preliminary Summary (open access)

Maximum Accelerators Caused by Underground Nuclear Explosions in the Oak Spring Formation in Area 12 of the Nevada Test Site at Distances of 5 to 300 Kilometers: a Preliminary Summary

From introduction: The results presented in this preliminary report are principally concerned with the ground motion caused by seven underground nuclear explosions (table 1) in the bedded tuff of the Oak Spring formation in Area 12. Ground motions were recorded at stations as close as 5 kilometers and as far as 300 kilometers from the explosions (fig 1 and table 2). The results for the Bianca and especially the Evans explosion are meager because the first was accompanied by a Test Site-wide moznentary power failure and because the yield of the second was so far below the anticipated yield that uncertain results were obtained. Ground motions caused by most of the air explosions in Operations Plumbbob and Hadtack - Phase 2 were recorded and have been partly analyzed. Results are presented in this report only where they relate significantly to analysis of the underground explosions. The effects of most of the small underground explosions in Area 3 (center of Yucca Flat) that had significant yields were also recorded. The results have not yet been interpreted.

Lode Deposits of the Fairbanks District, Alaska (open access)

Lode Deposits of the Fairbanks District, Alaska

From abstract: To help the mining industry of Alaska and to assist in the development of the mineral resources of the Territory have been the prime motives of the Geological Survey's investigations in Alaska during the past 35 years, in which nearly one half of the Territory has been covered by its reconnaissance and exploratory surveys. It was natural, therefore, that the Alaska Railroad, when it undertook intensive consideration of the problem of finding tonnage that would increase its revenues, should look to the Geological Survey to supply technical information as to the known mineral deposits along its route and to indicate what might be done to stimulate a larger production of minerals and induce further mining developments and prospecting that would utilize its service.

Lateral Ramps in the Folded Appalachians and in Overthrust Belts Worldwide—A Fundamental Element of Thrust-Belt Architecture

A report about lateral ramps which are zones where décollements change stratigraphic level along a strike. This report suggests that many cross-strike features may be underlain by lateral ramps that serve to transfer décollements from one stratigraphic level to another in the same manner as frontal ramp, but in a direction normal to the strike of the fold belt.

Mineral industry of Alaska in 1934 (open access)

Mineral industry of Alaska in 1934

From Introduction: "The value of its mineral resources has long been recognized as a matter of concern in the welfare of every nation, and all wise governments almost from time immemorial have taken steps to find out about, utilize, and safeguard such of these natural resources as lie within their own boundaries or to acquire rights in those they need that lie outside those boundaries. Obviously one of these lines concerns itself with the record of present performance-how much of the different mineral commodities is the country at present producing, where does this production come from and what are the facts as to the current developments in the industry? To answer some of these questions authoritatively is part of the work of the Alaskan branch of the Geological Survey, and answers to those questions for the year 1934 are given in the accompanying report."

Geologic Appraisal of Dimension-Stone Deposits (open access)

Geologic Appraisal of Dimension-Stone Deposits

From abstract: The construction stone industry comprises two major branches-dimension stone and crushed and broken stone. For purposes of geologic appraisal, deposits of these two categories should be treated separately, because they differ widely in use, mode of development, and exploitation. Deposits of dimension stones are subjected to much greater selectivity with respect to physical properties, uniformity, and modes of occurrence; these demand a much more critical and detailed study of geologic and mineralogic features.

Ground Water Test Well A, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: A Summary of Lithologic Data, Aquifer

Abstract: "ground-water test well A was drilled to a depth of 1,870 feet with rotary and cable-tool equipment. Only alluvial materials were penetrated. These were saturated below 1,605 feet. Pumping and bailing tests indicate that the minimum transmissibility of the alluvium is about 800 gallons per day per foot. The specific capacity was 1.9 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 1 hours of pumping at rates of both 41 and 60 gallons per minute. A suite of geophysical logs, a summary of contract costs, and a detailed description of drilling equipment and casing record are presented."
