Mathematics and Statistics Research Department progress report for period ending June 30, 1979. [ORNL] (open access)

Mathematics and Statistics Research Department progress report for period ending June 30, 1979. [ORNL]

This is the twenty-second in the series of progress reports of the Mathematics and Statistics Research Department and its predecessor organizations. Part A reports research progress in biomedical and environmental applications, materials science applications, model development and evaluation, moving-boundary problems, multivariate multipopulation classification, numerical linear algebra, risk analysis, and complementary areas. The results of collaboration with other researchers on problems in biology, chemistry, energy, engineering, environmental sciences, geology, health and safety research, information sciences, and material sciences are recorded in Part B. Parts C, D, and E contain short accounts of educational activities, lists of written and oral presentations of research results, and a list of other professional activities in which the staff was engaged. Although a few results are shown, the reports in this volume are only of extended abstract length. One may expect completed research to be reported in the usual channels. 6 figures, 2 tables. (RWR)

Extraction of uranium from seawater: evaluation of uranium resources and plant siting (open access)

Extraction of uranium from seawater: evaluation of uranium resources and plant siting

This report deals with the evaluation of U.S. coastal waters as a uranium resource and with the selection of a suitable site for construction of a large-scale plant for uranium extraction. Evaluation of the resource revealed that although the concentration of uranium is quite low, about 3.3 ppB in seawater of average oceanic salinity, the amount present in the total volume of the oceans is very great, some 4.5 billion metric tons. Of this, perhaps only that uranium contained in the upper 100 meters or so of the surface well-mixed layer should be considered accessible for recovery, some 160 million tonnes. The study indicated that open ocean seawater acquired for the purpose of uranium extraction would be a more favorable resource than rivers entering the sea, cooling water of power plants, or the feed or effluent streams of existing plants producing other products such as magnesium, bromine, or potable and/or agricultural water from seawater. Various considerations led to the selection of a site for a pumped seawater coastal plant at a coastal location. Puerto Yabucoa, Puerto Rico was selected. Recommendations are given for further studies. 21 figures, 8 tables.

World Energy Data System (WENDS). Volume X. Nuclear facility profiles, PO--ZA. [Brief tabulated information] (open access)

World Energy Data System (WENDS). Volume X. Nuclear facility profiles, PO--ZA. [Brief tabulated information]

In this compendium each profile of a nuclear facility is a capsule summary of pertinent facts regarding that particular installation. The facilities described include the entire fuel cycle in the broadest sense, encompassing resource recovery through waste management. Power plants and all US facilities have been excluded. To facilitate comparison the profiles have been recorded in a standard format. Because of the breadth of the undertaking some data fields do not apply to the establishment under discussion and accordingly are blank. The set of nuclear facility profiles occupies four volumes; the profiles are ordered by country name, and then by facility code. Each nuclear facility profile volume contains two complete indexes to the information. The first index aggregates the facilities alphabetically by country. It is further organized by category of facility, and then by the four-character facility code. It provides a quick summary of the nuclear energy capability or interest in each country and also an identifier, the facility code, which can be used to access the information contained in the profile.
