Photograph of information for Thompson House in Denison, Texas. Text: The James G. Thompson house was moved to Grayson County Frontier Village in 1990 having been moved from Nellie Chambers property on PawPaw Hill east of Denison. Mrs. Chambers moved the house to her property from Preston Bend but never got the whole structure. Thompson, Grayson County's first County Judge, also served as postmaster. Thompson being a cabinet maker, with the help of his family and possible slaves, built the "log frame" home using white oak logs. A wide hall in the center of the house leads to a back porch with small rooms on each end. One room served as a kitchen and the other Judge Thompson's office and post office. The hall gives the house the impression of a dog trot. It is noted that perhaps transients along the Thompson Ferry Road might have slept in the post office room without being taken into the family quarters.

Oral History Interview with Leonard Cornelius, July 28, 2011

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Leonard Cornelius. Cornelius joined the Navy in July 1941 and received basic training in San Diego. Upon completion, he was assigned to the USS Enterprise (CV-6) as a seaman. He arrived at Pearl Harbor the day after the attack and saw oil was still burning on the water in the devastated Battleship Row. As the war began, Cornelius became a cook aboard ship. His battle station was in the kitchen, preparing sandwiches for the nearly 3,000 crewmen at their stations. He enjoyed working the midnight shift, and one evening Admiral Halsey stopped by and invited Cornelius to join him for a cup of coffee. Halsey chatted with Cornelius for about 15 minutes, asking him about his work, and wished him well. After the war, Cornelius returned home and remained in the Navy another 15 years. He was discharged in October 1960.

Oral History Interview with Davis Mayes, December 7, 2011 transcript

Oral History Interview with Davis Mayes, December 7, 2011

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Davis Mayes. Mayes joined the Army in the summer of 1936 and received basic training at Fort Sam Houston. While there, he taught himself to type. Upon completion of his three-year enlistment, he left to join the Navy, where his typing experience qualified him to become a radioman, copying down Japanese signals. He was on standby aboard the USS Solace (AH-5) during the attack on Pearl Harbor, bearing witness to the incredible destruction and its aftermath. His next assignment was as chief communicator for the USS Enoree (AO-69), coordinating 50 ships for the delivery of supplies to Europe. Next, he was assigned to a seagoing tug as chief radioman. As the only chief aboard, he instructed the crew in repairing everything from kitchen equipment to motors, salvaging parts from the mothball fleet. In the Korean War, he again went beyond his duties as a radioman and conducted repairs all over the USS Healey (DD-762). Mayes left the service in 1957 and went on to enjoy a 25-year career with the RCA Corporation. He was the only engineer there without a college education.
