The Determination of Thorium in the Presence of Uranium, Titanium and Tungsten (open access)

The Determination of Thorium in the Presence of Uranium, Titanium and Tungsten

Abstract: "Thorium is separated from uranium, titanium and tungsten by precipitation as fluoride. The precipitate is ignited to oxide, dissolved in nitric acid, evaporated with perchloric acid, neutralized to a pH between 2.0 and 2.5 and titrated with the disodium salt of ethylene-ddiamine tetrascetic acid, using Eriochrome Cyanide as indicator. If less than 30 milligrams of thorium is present, lanthanum is added as a carrier."

Geology of the Stanford-Hobson Area, Central Montana

From introduction: The Stanford-Hobson area project was undertaken by the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Reclamation, as part of a program for the geologic mapping and investigation of mineral resources in the Missouri River basin. The field work that is the basis of the ensuing report consisted of mapping the geology and determining stratigraphic relationships in sufficient detail to evaluate the mineral resources, especially the oil and gas possibilities in the area.

INHALATION TOXICITY OF ZIRCONIUM COMPOUNDS. I. SHORT-TERM STUDIES (open access)

INHALATION TOXICITY OF ZIRCONIUM COMPOUNDS. I. SHORT-TERM STUDIES

A total of 270 animals of 5 species was exposed by inhalation to compounds of zirconium for 6 hours per day, 5 days per week. One group of animals was exposed to ZrO{sub 2} at an atmospheric concentration of 75 mg. Zr/m{sup 3} for 30 days; another, to 11 mg. Zr/m{sup 3} for 60 days. A third group was exposed to a mist of ZrCl{sub 4} at a level of 6 mg. Zr/m{sup 3} for 60 days. Zirconium oxide produced no significant changes in mortality, growth rate, blood nonprotein nitrogen or fibrinogen, urinary protein, hematological values or histological structure. Zirconium tetrachloride at 6 mg. Zr/m{sup 3} gave questionable changes in blood hemoglobin concentration and red cell counts of dogs and a slight increase in mortality of rats and guinea pigs. Inhaled zirconium compounds deposited primarily in the lung and pulmonary lymph node, with a fraction of a per cent in the bone and considerably less in the soft tissues. (auth)

Analysis of a Form of Peak Holding Control (open access)

Analysis of a Form of Peak Holding Control

From Introduction: "The general objective of this report is a study of the characteristics of the described form of peak holding control. The control has not yet been used in experimental turbojet-engine study. This study is concerned with only one method of extracting the maximum amount of information from a peak output for the purpose of maintaining that peak. The criteria sought in this control process are: maintenance of peak average output, minimum duration of time in undesirable operation, quickness in response to command to reach peak condition, least amount of excursion in the undesirable region, and type of stability."

Improved High Voltage Supply and Control Panel for the Nier Mass Spectrometer

Abstract: "The recurrent difficulties experienced in routine operation of the high voltage supplies and main control panels of the standard assay instruments are indicated. New supply and distribution units, which were designed to avoid these difficulties, have been constructed and tested. This report briefly describes these units and presents a more detailed description of a high current power supply and main control panel."

Geologic Features of Areas of Abnormal Radioactivity South of Ocala, Marion County, Florida (open access)

Geologic Features of Areas of Abnormal Radioactivity South of Ocala, Marion County, Florida

From abstract: Areas of abnormal radioactivity south of Ocala, Marion County, Fla., discovered in 1953 by aerial survey, were investigated by surface examination and by 10 power auger drill holes. Interbedded clay, clayey sand, and uraniferous phosphorite occur in the areas of anomalous radioactivity. Miocene fossils occur at three localities in these beds which are evidently outliers of Miocene sediments on the Ocala limestone of Eocene age. The preserved outliers are southwest of the main belt of Miocene sediments. The principal uraniferous rocks are clayey, sandy, pellet phosphorite that occurs in beds a few feet thick, and very porous, phosphatic sand rock which makes abundant float at many places. Apatite forms the phosphate pellets in the unweathered phosphorite. The very porous, phosphatic sand rock is the highly leached residuum of the pellet phosphorite and is composed mainly of quartz, kaolinite, wavellite, and crandallite ( pseudowavellite2). It closely resembles the aluminum phosphate rock of the "leached zone" of the Bone Valley formation in the land-pebble phosphate district.
