Flight Tests of a Curtiss No. 838-1C2-18 Three-Blade Propeller Having Trailing-Edge Extensions

"Flight tests to determine propeller performance have been made of a Curtiss No. 838-102-18 three-blade propeller having trailing-edge extensions on a Republic P-47D-28 airplane in climb and high speed. These tests are a part of a general propeller flight-test program at the Langley Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Results of climb tests indicate that when power is changed from approximately 1475 horsepower at 2550 rpm (roughly normal power) to 2400 horsepower at 2700 rpm (approximately military power) there is a loss in propeller efficiency of 3 percent at an altitude of 7000 feet, and 4 percent at 21,000 feet" (p. 1).

Dipole strength functions in the actinide mass region

We have calculated a number of neutron- and photon-induced reactions for the actinide nuclei /sup 232/Th, /sup 238/U, and /sup 237/Np. By fitting average resonance capture (ARC) measurements and total neutron capture data, we deduced absolute dipole strength functions for /sup 233/Th and /sup 239/U. We have found that the M1/E1 ratio is the same as in the /sup 176/Lu case, but the total transition strength was larger by about 27%. 17 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Calculated cross sections for production and destruction of some long-lived nuclides of importance in fusion energy applications

Knowledge of the production and destruction of long-lived species via neutrons, photons, and charged-particles is required in many fusion energy applications, such as reactor first-wall and blanket design, radioactive waste management, etc. Here we describe our calculational results for the production, via the (n,2n) reaction, of the following long-lived species: {sup 150}Eu(t{sub 1/2} = 36 y), {sup 152}Eu(t{sub 1/2} = 13 y), and {sup 192m2}Ir(t{sub 1/2} = 241 y). Some comments on calculations that we`ve made for destruction reactions of these species are also included.

Search for W-prime boson production in the top quark decay channel (open access)

Search for W-prime boson production in the top quark decay channel

We present a search for the production of a new heavy gauge boson W' that decays to a top quark and a bottom quark. We have analyzed 230 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. No significant excess of events is found in any region of the final state invariant mass distribution. We set upper limits on the production cross section of W bosons at the 95% confidence level for several different W' boson masses. We exclude masses below 610 GeV for a W' boson with standard-model-like couplings, below 630 GeV for a W' boson with right-handed couplings that is allowed to decay to both leptons and quarks, and below 670 GeV for a W' boson with right-handed couplings that is only allowed to decay to quarks.

Report presenting a general analysis that allows the rolling motions of an aircraft using a displacement-response, flicker-type automatic pilot to be determined. The system is not ideal for many stabilization problems due to inherent residual oscillations, but it offers a simple and economical solution in situations in which steady state oscillations are not a problem. Results regarding some general remarks, transient and steady states, stabilization boundaries, amplitude equations, and period equations are provided.

Near-field dispersal modeling for liquid fuel-air explosives

The near-field, explosive dispersal of a liquid into air has been explored using a combination of analytical and numerical models. The near-field flow regime is transient, existing only as long as the explosive forces produced by the detonation of the burster charge dominate or are approximately equal in magnitude to the aerodynamic drag forces on the liquid. The near-field model provides reasonable initial conditions for the far-field model, which is described in a separate report. The near-field model consists of the CTH hydrodynamics code and a film instability model. In particular, the CTH hydrodynamics code is used to provide initial temperature, pressure, and velocity fields, and bulk material distribution for the far-field model. The film instability model is a linear stability model for a radially expanding fluid film, and is used to provide a lower bound on the breakup time and an upper and lower bound on the initial average drop diameter for the liquid following breakup. Predictions of the liquid breakup time and the initial arithmetic average drop diameter from the model compare favorably with the sparse experimental data. 26 refs., 20 figs., 8 tabs.

Thermoacoustic natural gas liquefier

This is the final report of a two-year, Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This project sought to develop a natural-gas-powered natural-gas liquefier that has absolutely no moving parts and requires no electrical power. It should have high efficiency, remarkable reliability, and low cost. The thermoacoustic natural-gas liquefier (TANGL) is based on our recent invention of the first no-moving-parts cryogenic refrigerator. In short, our invention uses acoustic phenomena to produce refrigeration from heat, with no moving parts. The required apparatus comprises nothing more than heat exchangers and pipes, made of common materials, without exacting tolerances. Its initial experimental success in a small size lead us to propose a more ambitious application: large-energy liquefaction of natural gas, using combustion of natural gas as the energy source. TANGL was designed to be maintenance-free, inexpensive, portable, and environmentally benign.

Hydrotreating studies involving NiMo/silica-doped hydrous titanium oxide (HTO:Si)-coated alumina catalysts

For hydrotreating a petroleum-derived liquid feed at 400 C, LHSV = 2. 5 g/g{sub cat}/h, and 1500 psig hydrogen (H) pressure, both HDS and HDN activities were roughly equivalent for a name/TO:Si-coated Amocat catalyst and a commercial alumina-supported name catalyst (Amocat 1C). Superior HDN performance was exhibited by the name/TO: Si-coated Amocat catalyst at low H pressure (500 psig) and after H pressure cycling (1500-500-1500 psig) relative to Amocat 1C. Consistent with previous results obtained on a coal-derived liquid feed, the HDS/HDN results with the petroleum-derived liquid showed that the performance of the name/TO:Si-coated Amocat catalyst on an active metals weight basis exceeded the performance of Amocat 1C at all test conditions. The name/TO:Si-coated Amocat catalyst also showed potentially increased hydrogenation activity, increased resistance to deactivation, and increased yields of lower boiling point distillate fractions, although further work is needed.

The reaction of U0/sub 2/F/sub 2/ with hydrogen at 700 to 850 deg C was briefly investigated since it could constitute a major step in the recycle of U0/ sub 2/F/sub 2/ in the Fluorox process. The reaction in this temperature range proceeds according to the equation U0/sub 2/F/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/ yields U0/sub 2/ + 2 HF. Rates of the chemical reaction were not obtsined, since, with the thermogravimetric technique used, the rate-controlling process was bed diffusion. However, there is no doubt that the rate of chemical reaction is sufficiently high for the desired application. No significant amount of UF/sub 4/ was formed by the back-reaction, U0/sub 2/ + 4 HF yields UF/sub 4/ + 2 H/sub 2/0. (auth)

The Charge asymmetry in W bosons produced in p anti-p collisions at center of mass energy - 1.96 TeV

The primary mode of production of W{sup +} bosons in a p{bar p} collider is u + {bar d} {yields} W{sup +}. The u quark generally carries more momentum than the {bar d} and the resultant W{sup +} tends to be boosted in the proton direction. Similarly, W bosons are boosted in the anti-proton direction. This is observed as an asymmetry in the rapidity distributions of positive and negative W bosons. Measurement of this asymmetry serves as a probe of the momentum distribution of partons within the proton. These distributions are required as input to the calculation of every p{bar p} production cross section. This thesis presents the first measurement at D0 of the charge asymmetry of the W boson production cross section as measured in W {yields} ev decays in 0.3 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions collected with the D0 Detector. Theoretical predictions made using the CTEQ6.1M and MRST(2004) parton distribution functions are compared with the measurement.

A series of six shallow temperature-gradient holes were drilled for Sunoco Energy Development Company in Panther Canyon, Pershing County, Nevada during the period March 24 through June 15, 1981. A proposed intermediate-depth gradient hole was spud but abandoned after encountering unresolvable drilling problems. The locations of these holes are shown on figure 1. This report summarizes the results of the Panther Canyon project.

A standardized approach for determining radiological sabotage targets

The US Department of Energy has required radiological sabotage vulnerability assessments to be conducted for years. However, the exact methodology to be used in this type of analysis still remains somewhat elusive. Therefore, there is tremendous variation in the methodologies and assumptions used to determine release levels and doses potentially affecting the health and safety of the public. In some cases, there are three orders of magnitude difference in results for dispersal of similar materials under similar meteorological conditions. To address this issue, the authors have developed an approach to standardizing radiological sabotage target analysis that starts by addressing basic assumptions and then directs the user to some recommended computerized analytical tools. Results from different dispersal codes are also compared in this analysis.
