The Fort Worth Stockyards Company was created by Greenleif W. Simpson and Louville V. Niles. This company would soon cement Fort Worth as the premier livestock producer in America, soon surpassing Chicago.

Infrared-Microwave Double Resonance Probing of the Population-Depopulation of Rotational States in the NO₂ and the SO₂ Molecules

A 10.6 ym C02 laser operating a power range S P 200 watts was used to pump some select vibrational transitions in the NO2 molecule while monitoring the rotational transitions (91/9—'100/10), (232f 22 ~~"*242,23> ' (402,38 "393,37) in the (0, 0, 0) vibrational level and the (8q,8—*"^1,7) rotational transition in the (0, 1, 0) vibrational level. These rotational transitions were monitored by microwave probing to determine how the population of states in the rotational manifolds were being altered by the laser. Coincidences between some components of the V3-V2 band of N02 and the C02 infrared laser lines in the 10 um region appeared to be responsible for the strong interaction between the continuous laser beams and the molecular states.

Cognitive Strategies for the Control of Experimentally Induced Pain: The Role of Pleasantness and Relevance of Content in Imagery

This study compared the relative efficacy of four imagery techniques in increasing tolerance to cold pressor pain. Relevant pleasant, relevant unpleasant, irrelevant pleasant, and irrelevant unpleasant imagery strategies were compared in a two-way factorial design. Prior research suggested that pleasantness and relevance both affect imagery potency. This study attempted to assess the relative contribution of these two variables to increases in pain tolerance. Also investigated were the roles of several hypothesized mediating variables; namely, contextual valence, self-efficacy, treatment credibility, and involvement in imagery. The subjects were 60 female undergraduates who were randomly assigned to the four imagery groups. Two-way analysis of covariance were performed on all dependent variables, using pain threshold as the covariate. Pearons r.'s were used to test correlational hypotheses.

The present study investigates the effect of brain damage on verbal-spatial-cognitive (VSC) and sensorimotor (SM) measures included in the McCarron-Dial System (MDS). The subjects include 141 brain damaged adults and 42 psychiatric controls. The following research questions are addressed: (a) Does the brain damaged group differ significantly from controls? (b) Are there significant differences among left, right, anterior, posterior, and diffuse brain damaged groups? (c) Do early onset, late onset, acute, and chronic damaged groups differ significantly? and (d) Does a cerebral palsy group differ significantly from a non-CP brain damaged group?

The Generalization of Problem Identification and Remedial Plan Skills in Client-Centered Case Consultation

An analogue study examines the acquisition and generalization of problem identification and remedial plan skills following client-centered, school case consultation. Nine trained consultants interacted with 35 undergraduate female consultees in one of three intervention conditions. Conditions involved the consultants either viewing the same problem as consultees, not viewing the problem, or attention control. Consultees viewed ten minute video tapes of a problem student in a classroom, then provided written problem descriptions and remedial plans. They then received twenty minutes of consultation or control, and again wrote descriptions of the problem and remedial plans. The same procedure was repeated two day later. One week later, subjects viewed another video tape of a problem student, provided written problem descriptions and remedial plans, but received no interventions.

Theoretical and Experimental Linewidth Parameters in the Rotational Spectrum of Nitrogen Dioxide

Contributions to the second order collision efficiency function S ⁽²⁾ (b), used in semiclassical perturbation approaches to pressure broadening of microwave and infrared spectra, due to several leading terms, dipole and quadrupole components, in the expansion of the intermolecular interaction energy are derived by method of irreducible spherical tensor operators for molecules of arbitrary symmetry. Results are given explicitly in terms of dipole and quadrupole line strengths. General expressions for dipole moment line strength in the asymmetric rotor basis as well as quadrupole moment line strength for the special case of molecules with two independent quadrupole moment components are derived. Computer programs for calculating linewidth parameters in the rotational spectrum of ¹⁴NO₂ based on Anderson and Murphy and Boggs theories are presented.

The first task was a multiple choice written test to determine the rate of metaphorlc preference. Part two consisted of children developing metaphors. Part three and four required explanations of the meaning of preferred metaphors and produced metaphors.

The Existential Concepts of Time, Death and Choice in the Poetry of Philip Larkin

This thesis examines time, death, and choice in Philip Larkin's poetry, arguing that his approach to these themes is not deterministic, but existential. The argument is based on the similarity between Larkin's views and those of three existential philosophers. Larkin's view of time, like Heidegger's, is that men live not in long stretches of time, but in processions of unconnected yet similar moments. A constant underlying sadness, like Kierkegaard's despair, makes each moment reminiscent of death. Like Sartre, Larkin finds meaning in his choices, and struggles to live authentically without expectation. Although Thomas Hardy influenced Larkin, given these similarities, Larkin's poetry cannot rightly be called deterministic. It is an attempt to preserve experience for its own sake.

Lecithin Treatment for Tardive Dyskinesia: A Clinical Evaluation

Tardive dyskinesia is an insidious and debilitating extrapyramidal side effect of neuroleptic drug treatment. Recent research has suggested that lecithin has been effective in treating tardive dyskinesia. Lecithin's effects were evaluated under double-blind placebo controlled conditions. Treatment conditions included a placebo control group, a lecithin treatment group, and a no-treatment control group. Subjects in the lecithin group received 60 gms/day of lecithin (33 gms of phosphatidylcholine) . Subjects in the placebo group received a similar mixture which contained no lecithin. Subjects received mixtures for 9-11 days. Treatment effectiveness was determined by subjective, objective, and global evaluations. All subjects were evaluated 3 to 4 days prior to treatment and following 9 to 11 days of treatment.

The Perceptual Impact of Basic Communication Fidelity and Nationality Upon Selected Group Interaction Variables

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of basic communication fidelity (BCF) upon the perceptions of national observers toward national and international communicators across a variety of group interaction variables. Research is presented which indicates that (1) international students are typically perceived less favorably than national students across a variety of interpersonal variables; (2) as BCF increases, more favorable ratings are attributed to communicators across interpersonal variables; and (3) increased BCF may be able to mitigate the less favorable impressions national observers attribute to international communicators.

M-Shell X-Ray Production of Gold, Lead, Bismuth, Uranium for Incident Hydrogen, Helium and Fluorine Ions

Incident ¹H⁺ and ⁴He⁺ ions at 0.3-2.6 MeV and ¹⁹F^q⁺ ions at 25, 27 and 35 MeV were used to study the M-shell x-ray production cross sections of Au, Pb, Bi and U. For the incident fluorine ions, projectile charge state dependence of the cross sections were extracted from measurements made with varying target thicknesses ( ~1 to ~300 μg/cm²). The efficiency of the Si(Li) detector was determined by measuring the K-shell x-ray production of various low Z elements and comparing these values to the prediction of the CPSS theory. The experimental results are compared to the prediction of first Born approximation for direct ionization to the continuum and to the OBK of Nikolaev for the electron capture to the K-, L-, M-...shells of the incident ion. Comparison is also made with the ECPSSR theory that accounts for the energy loss, Coulomb deflection, and relativistic effects in the perturbed stationary state theory.

Expertness and Similarity as Factors of Influence in the Preferences of Deaf College Students for Therapists

This study utilized Strong's (1963) theory of counseling as a social influence process to investigate the effect of therapist's training, experience, and similarity on hearingimpaired subjects' perceptions of the therapist's expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness and their willingness to see the therapist. Increasing levels of therapists' training and work experience was hypothesized to increase subjects' perception of expertness and their willingness to see the therapist. Increasing levels of therapists' similarity to the client was hypothesized to increase subjects' perceptions of expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness and their willingness to see the therapist. Subjects' ratings of the therapist were hypothesized to change when therapists with different levels of similarity were seen in different orders of presentation.

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of determining perceived attitudes of self-concept of educationally disadvantaged students in special vocational environments, other vocational students, and academic students as measured by the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. The hypotheses formulated to carry out this study included: 1. There is no significant difference in the mean attitude self-concept score of vocational education students, academic students, and educationally disadvantaged students (CVAE) as measured by the Piers-Harris ChildrenIs SelfConcept Scale. 2. There is no significant difference in the mean attitude self-concept scores as measured by the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale between vocational education students, academic students, and CVAE students and number of years of placement in a vocational program, academic program and CVAE program. The Piers-Harris Children1s Self-Concept Scale was administered to 311 students from the CVAE, vocational, and academic programs in the Birdville Independent School District, Fort Worth, Texas and Denton Independent School District, Denton, Texas.

Anthropology as Administrative Tool: the Use of Applied Anthropology by the War Relocation Authority

Beginning in the 1930's a debate emerged within the American Anthropological Association over applied versus pure research. With a few exceptions the members refused to endorse or support the attempt to introduce applied anthropology as a discipline recognized by the Association. This refusal resulted in the creation of a separate organization, the Society for Applied Anthropology, in 1941. In order to prove the validity of their discipline the members of the Society needed an opportunity. That opportunity appeared with the signing of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forced removal of Japanese-Americans from the west coast. Members of the Society believed the employment of applied anthropologists by the War Relocation Authority would demonstrate the value of their discipline. When provided with this opportunity, however, applied anthropology failed.
