Diagnostic Measurements of a Highly Ionized, Steady-state Plasma

This paper is primarily intended to give an account of a few of the diagnostic techniques that have been applied to a highly ionized, steady-state helium plasma at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. However, to establish a proper perspective it will first be well to describe briefly the system in which the plasma is generated and studied.

BEFCYF And DBDT: IBM 704 Codes For Preparing Input For Bevatron Orbit Code (BOC)

Two IBM-704 codes have been written which are auxiliary to the Bevatron orbit code BOC. The first, BEFCYF, interpolates among tabulated values of the median-plane magnetic flux density of the Bevatron to produce an equivalent array of values in a form appropriate to BOC. The second, DBDT, produces azimuthal derivatives of the fields produced by BEFCYF. The internal operation of BEFCYF and DBDT is described, and instructions for their execution are given.

The Determination of Thorium in the Presence of Uranium, Titanium and Tungsten (open access)

The Determination of Thorium in the Presence of Uranium, Titanium and Tungsten

Abstract: "Thorium is separated from uranium, titanium and tungsten by precipitation as fluoride. The precipitate is ignited to oxide, dissolved in nitric acid, evaporated with perchloric acid, neutralized to a pH between 2.0 and 2.5 and titrated with the disodium salt of ethylene-ddiamine tetrascetic acid, using Eriochrome Cyanide as indicator. If less than 30 milligrams of thorium is present, lanthanum is added as a carrier."

The Effect of Temperature on the Width of a Small-Amplitude, Solitary Wave in a Collision-Free Plasma

"Adlam and Allen and Davis, Lust, and Schluter have studied nonlinear plane-waves, propagating normal to the magnetic field, in a cold plasma. One solution of particular interest is a solitary wave, or single pulse. We present a method for solving the analogous problem for a plasma with finite temperature, in the limiting case where the amplitude of the wave is small and where, consequently, the width of the waver is very large."

The Determination of Small Amounts of Thorium in the Presence of Uranium, Titanium, and Tungsten (open access)

The Determination of Small Amounts of Thorium in the Presence of Uranium, Titanium, and Tungsten

Thorium is determined in uranium alloys by means of a fluoride separation followed by a complexometric titration. A nitric of hydrochloric acid solution of the alloy is neutralized to a pH of 2.0 to 3.0 and the thorium precipitated as thorium fluoride by the addition of hydrofluoric acid and ammonium fluoride using lanthanum as a carrier.

The Development of Compression Waves in an Adiabatic Two-Fluid Model of a Collision-Free Plasma (open access)

The Development of Compression Waves in an Adiabatic Two-Fluid Model of a Collision-Free Plasma

"A generalized discontinuous solution was found for the adiabatic two- fluid equations in the steady state: it covers the case of strong shocks and enables a complete account to be made of the steady state solutions of these equations. By considering a piston problem using numerical methods, time dependent solutions of the equations were also found; these rapidly steepened and converged to the discontinuous steady state solutions whenever these existed."

Grain Size Study on Irradiated Powder Metal Uranium (open access)

Grain Size Study on Irradiated Powder Metal Uranium

Metallographic examination of an irradiated powder metal uranium slug from PT-313-105-4M⁽¹⁾ was undertaken primarily as an evaluation of recently remotized metallographic equipment. It was, also, proposed to compare the grain size with values obtained ultrasonically on the same slug. It was further proposed to make a comparison, so far as limited data permitted, of post-irradiated powder metal uranium grain size with that to be expected from normal uranium similarly irradiated.

The Hydrogen Content of Fabricated Uranium (open access)

The Hydrogen Content of Fabricated Uranium

The hydrogen contents of several types of fabricated uranium have been determined by a vacuum method and expressed in terms of ccH2/ccU. The data indicate that alpha-rolled metal contains about 0.25 ccH2(STP)/ccU whereas beta heat-treated uranium yielded values between 0.30 and 0.37 cc per cc. Restricted efforts were made to determine where in the heat treatment the 5 to 10 cc of hydrogen per slug were taken up. It appears that no one operation is wholly responsible for this additional gas, although reactions between beta heat treated surfaces containing microscopic defects, and nitric acid may possibly play a large role. In general it may be said that slug produced by powder metallurgical techniques contain less hydrogen than pieces produced by rolling and heat treatment.

Improved High Voltage Supply and Control Panel for the Nier Mass Spectrometer

Abstract: "The recurrent difficulties experienced in routine operation of the high voltage supplies and main control panels of the standard assay instruments are indicated. New supply and distribution units, which were designed to avoid these difficulties, have been constructed and tested. This report briefly describes these units and presents a more detailed description of a high current power supply and main control panel."

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, July-September 1953

"Continued progress has been made with the high temperature decontamination processes for irradiated uranium fuel. The fused salt treatment of molten uranium has been extended to UCl3. Plutonium and rare earths were extracted into the UCl3 phase. Direct plutonium distillation from molten irradiated uranium has been scaled up to the hundred gram scale. Solid scavenging experiments using uranium oxide, uranium carbide, and uranium nitride in contact with molten uranium have indicated fission product removal. A scaled-up investigation of the separation and recover of uranium from an SIR type ceramic fuel using the volatile fluoride process has indicated the feasibility of this separation method. The effect of irradiation on the decomposition of BrF3 has been further studies in experiments using the NAA statitron.'

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, January-March 1954

"Scale-up work on high temperature fuel recovery processes has progressed to the point where the (high temperature) vacuum furnace for several operations to the hot cells has been completed and tested under operating conditions. Small scale experiments on high temperature methods for processing molten irradiated uranium fuel have been made with spent X-10 fuel slug pieces. The results of direct Pu evaporation, treatment with fused fluorides and oxide scavenging were every similar to those found with tracer experiments."

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, April-June 1954

"Scale-up experiments on high temperature fuel recovery processes have included the dummy run phase on the handling of 1-kologram samples of molten, non-irradiated uranium in the hot cell. The next step involves the use of spent X-10 fuel slugs. Small scale experiments with X-10 uranium on the extaction of Pu with Mg show that as much as 80 per cent of the Pu can be removed in pone pass. Treatment of uranium with fused fluorides can remove at least 90 per cent of the Pu in one pass. Oxide scavenging with ZrO2 is very effective in removing rare earths.:

Separations Chemistry, Quarterly Progress Report, October-December 1953

"Work has continued on high temperature methods for processing irradiated uranium fuel. Additional results have been obtained with fused halide treatment, solid scavengers and direct Pu distillation. With fussed fluorides about 95 per cent of the Pu was removed from a uranium sample, while treatment of uranium with HC1 gas removed almost all the Pu and many fission products. treatment of molten uranium with uranium oxide removed a substantial fraction of the fission products without removing Pu. Uranium carbide treatment results were similar to the oxide but not as effective. A small scale distillation of Pu from uranium showed that Raoult's law is obeyed."

Minutes of the Conference of Linear Accelerators for High Energies (open access)

Minutes of the Conference of Linear Accelerators for High Energies

During the past year notable progress was made in several laboratories on design for linear accelerators in the energy range up to and above 1 Bev. Interest in linacs for this energy centers on two possible applications: first, as injectors for 300 to 1000 Bev synchrotrons, and second, as sources of intense meson beams. To review this progress, a conference jointly sponsored by the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Yale University was held at Brookhaven during the week of August 20, 1962.
