An examination of performance aspects of two major works for percussion ensemble: Toccata by Carlos Chávez and Cantata para América mágica by Alberto Ginastera, a lecture recital, together with four recitals of selected works of I. Stravinsky, R. Vaughan Williams, W.A. Mozart, V. Persichetti, and P. Hindemith

This study addresses the ways and means a conductor may approach two major twentieth century works written specifically for percussion ensemble. Performance techniques and decisions on aesthetics made by the conductor in dealing with such items as timbre, balance, pitch levels, and pitch relationships are also considered.

Sales Forecasting Accuracy Over Time: An Empirical Investigation (open access)

Sales Forecasting Accuracy Over Time: An Empirical Investigation

This study investigated forecasting accuracy over time. Several quantitative and qualitative forecasting models were tested and a number of combinational methods was investigated. Six time series methods, one causal model, and one subjective technique were compared in this study. Six combinational forecasts were generated and compared to individual forecasts. A combining technique was developed. Thirty data sets, obtained from a market leader in the cosmetics industry, were used to forecast sales. All series represent monthly sales from January 1985 to December 1989. Gross sales forecasts from January 1988 to June 1989 were generated by the company using econometric models. All data sets exhibited seasonality and trend.

An Experiment on the Interactions of the Learner, HCI, and Training Manual in Learning a Computer Software Package (open access)

An Experiment on the Interactions of the Learner, HCI, and Training Manual in Learning a Computer Software Package

Training is a vital link between idle or inadequately used software and software seen as a tool. Education can take many forms such as self exploration, CAI, manuals, and formal class room training. The introduction of a computer to a system interjects complex interactions between the computer user and his work environment. Research in this area has been performed by such disciplines as MIS, education, and psychology. A fundamental purpose of this research is to study the interaction of such user variables as cognitive style, demographics, and reading to variables from education and psychology such as advanced organizers, reinforcement, and document layout.

A Study of Student Environmental Knowledge and Attitudes in Selected High Schools in the Permian Basin Region of Texas (open access)

A Study of Student Environmental Knowledge and Attitudes in Selected High Schools in the Permian Basin Region of Texas

This study is a partial replication of research conducted by Perkes (1973). The problem in this study is to assess the magnitude of the relationship between student knowledge of the environment, student gender, grade level, and size of school attended; and the level of attitudinal differences between students based upon student gender, grade level, and the size of school that students attend. Methods of data collection include the use of an environmental knowledge and attitude inventory used by Perkes (1973) and modified by Hardy and Fox (1976). This thesis includes an added dimension, a survey of environmental education curricula in the Permian Basin Region of Texas.

The Offstage Effect: An Historical and Stylistic Perspective with Performance Considerations for Trumpet (open access)

The Offstage Effect: An Historical and Stylistic Perspective with Performance Considerations for Trumpet

The present study does not attempt to present a complete or exhaustive survey of the myriad spatial orchestrational devices occurring in the symphonic and operatic repertoire. Rather, the study is limited to an examination of the specified use of the trumpet as an offstage instrument in selected representative works. The study's purpose is to identify trends in the use of this orchestrational device, to serve as an aid to the trumpeter in matters of interpretation, and to provide a practical reference for the solution of acoustical and technical problems common to the performance of spatially conceived music in the orchestral literature.

An Exploratory Examination of the Profitability Impact of Quality Dimensions for Consumer Goods and Industrial Capital Goods (open access)

An Exploratory Examination of the Profitability Impact of Quality Dimensions for Consumer Goods and Industrial Capital Goods

The issue of dimensions of quality has received very little attention in the marketing literature. This dissertation studies the impact selected individual dimensions of quality has on firm performance. The study examined the relation between product, service and image based dimensions of quality and firm performance. The performance measure utilized in this study was a firm's return on investment (ROI). Sample for the study included Strategic Business Units (SBUs) involved in the manufacture of consumer goods and industrial capital goods. A theoretical framework that details performance effects of selected variables was developed. Drawing upon previous research in Marketing, Management, Economics, and Strategic Planning, propositions and hypotheses were developed. The data required to test the hypotheses was obtained from the PIMS data base of the Strategic Planning Institute. Several GLM procedures including ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Multiple Comparison tests, such as SNK, Tukey and Bonferroni, were employed to test the various operational hypothesis. The results show that product and image based dimensions of quality impact RoT differentially for consumer goods and industrial capital goods. The extent of the difference depends on the order of market entry and the product's stage in the product life cycle. On the other hand, service based dimensions …

Toxic chemical syndrome: body burden and immune parameters affected by environmental chemicals

The purpose of the present study was to determine: (1) that dental office personnel would be exposed to more toxic chemicals in the workplace than the non-dental office controls; (2) that exposure should lead to a reduction in the efficiency of the immune system in the individuals in the dental office; and (3) the immunological deficit should manifest itself in psychological and/or physiological pathology as measured on the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Bender Gestalt.

A Descriptive Survey of Libraries Supporting Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs Accredited by the National League for Nursing and Nursing Doctoral Programs

The purpose of this study is to provide base line data which does not currently exist for libraries supporting nursing education in baccalaureate, masters and doctoral nursing programs. The survey covers physical environment, clientele, resources, budget, and personnel in these libraries. A survey instrument was developed by the researcher and sent to 537 nursing programs in senior colleges and universities listed in Baccalaureate Education in Nursing 1989-90, and Graduate Education in Nursing 1989-90. Two hundred and fifty two or 47 percent of the institutions responded.

Parental and Children's Experiences and Adjustment in Maternal Versus Joint Custody Families (open access)

Parental and Children's Experiences and Adjustment in Maternal Versus Joint Custody Families

Differences between joint custody and mother custody families were assessed. The sample consisted of 42 post divorce families which had a child between the age of 4 and 15 years and resided in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. This cross sectional, multimethod, quasi-experimental study examined two groups of divorced families. The experimental group consisting of 21 joint custody families, was compared to the control group, consisting of 21 mother custody families. Families were matched between the two groups based on the child's gender, age and time lapse since parental separation. Within each family, interviews were conducted with one parent and with the parent's permission, a target child. Besides the interview, parents completed a questionnaire and the Child Behavior Checklist. Only 19 parents gave permission for their child to be interviewed. Parents completed a questionnaire and the Child Behavior Checklist.
