S>During the initial 6 month period of this project, attention was focused on several individual problem areas, primarily through literature searches ond interpretations of the data found. The first was a review of information on the effects of internal radiation doses to the lung with emphasis on the key question of the possible difference in response between a uniformly distributed dose and the same energy delivered to smaller -masses of tissue from radioactive particles. The second involved a study of the soil properties of importance to the transfer to man of radioactive particles and the factors involved in wind erosion with resulting air concentrations. The third was an attempt to better define the many questions arising from mechanisms of transfer involving localized concentrations of plutonium, either from direct disturbance of the soil or from transport of the contamination to other areas. Finally, calculations were made on the air concentrations expected from wind pickup of particles from one contaminated area for comporison with measurements in this area and to further refine the calculational model. Experimental results on the two-stage, Venetian Blind, direct energy converter
Some preliminary results obtained from experiments designed to test the feasibility of the Venetian Blind, direct energy-conversion concept are discussed. A two-stage unit was built and tested and found to have an overall efficiency of 65% for an energy spread of from 330 to 1000 eV. The calculated efficiency was 69% leaving a 4% discrepancy. This discrepancy seems to result from the slight transparency in the backward direction of the ribbons of the converter. (auth)

Technique for environmental decision making using quantified social and aesthetic values
A four-phase study was designed for the evaluation of social, economic and environmental tradeoffs in the analysis of nuclear power plant siting options. The results of the first phase of this work are reported. This phase included: examination of environmental statements and guidelines and intervenors' statements to determine the aignificant criteria to be analyzed; development of a questionnaire with design options for two chosen sites; the answering of the questionnaire by environmentalists, high school students, and businessmen; analysis of the survey results; and an explanation of the mechanics of making the analysis of a given design on a given site.
