Supplementary report from the U.S. Bureau of Mines regarding the results of a survey of the natural gas (helium) resources available in the United States. From the summary: "Certain source data and results of analysis pertinent to 1,575 gas samples, which have been obtained from 26 States, Alaska, and Canada (only a few from the latter 2 regions) and analyzed in connection with the helium-survey program of the Bureau of Mines, are presented in tabular form. This publication is supplementary to Bulletin 486 of the Bureau of Mines. Samples analyzed from late 1947 to around May 1956 are included in this bulletin and augment the samples reported in Bulletin 486" (p. 1).

Free-flight transonic model investigation of jet effects on a fighter-type configuration employing a tail boom and three horizontal-tail positions (open access)

Free-flight transonic model investigation of jet effects on a fighter-type configuration employing a tail boom and three horizontal-tail positions

Report presenting the results of a limited research program initiated to study the effects of a hot propulsive jet on the longitudinal stability characteristics of a fighter-type airplane configuration. The data was obtained from a rocket-boosted free-flight model investigation over a range of Mach numbers using four models that differed only in the position and size of the horizontal tail. Results regarding the time histories, trim, normal force, pitching moment, aerodynamic-center location, dynamic stability, trim drag, and pressure data are provided.

Summary of Methods of Measuring Angle of Attack on Aircraft (open access)

Summary of Methods of Measuring Angle of Attack on Aircraft

Note presenting wind-tunnel calibrations of three types of angle-of-attack sensing devices - the pivoted vane, the differential pressure tube, and the null-seeking pressure tube. Flight data on the position errors for three sensor locations - ahead of the fuselage nose, ahead of the wing tip, and on the forebody of the fuselage - are also presented. Various methods for calibrating angle-of-attack installations in flight are briefly described.

Comparison of Various Heat Exchangers for Liquid-Metal Nuclear Turbojet Over Range of Flight and Operating Conditions (open access)

Comparison of Various Heat Exchangers for Liquid-Metal Nuclear Turbojet Over Range of Flight and Operating Conditions

Memorandum presenting an analysis of a large number of liquid-metal-to-air heat-exchanger cores for the nuclear-powered liquid-metal turbojet cycle to determine which types yield the best overall net thrust per total engine weight. The performances of all exchangers considered were initially evaluated at a median condition. The performance of the best of each of the four types was compared with that of a shell-and-tube exchanger with the air flowing through the tubes, operating at the same condition.

Normal component of induced velocity for entire field of a uniformly loaded lifting rotor with highly swept wake as determined by electromagnetic analog

Report presenting values of the nondimensional normal component of induced velocity throughout the flow field of a uniformly loaded lifting rotor operating in the upper half of the helicopter speed range in the form of graphs and tables. The results obtained should be useful for estimating the induced velocity distribution about lifting rotors in general and for synthesizing the distributions over the rotor disk for the case of any specified non-uniform loading.
