This is part of a series of reports that cover the study of 202 sites throughout the world providing data on rock and soil to a depth of 100 feet and on climatic conditions. This volume discusses locations in Europe, the U.S.S.R. and Southwest Asia.

Report discussing a geological study that took place from January 1952 - April 1953 to determine the habits, ore controls, and possible origins of the uranium deposit of the Shinarump No. 1 mine, which is located approximately 12 miles northwest of Moab, Utah.

From Abstract: "A qualitative spectrographic method of analysis of single mineral grains, impurity inclusions, X-ray powder spindles, and other small samples weighing 1 mg or less is described."

"This report, one of four on the peripheral areas, describes Cenozoic rocks on the northern and eastern edges of the land-pebble phosphate district, including part of the hard rock phosphate belt, Figure 1 and Plate 1 show the area studied."

Report discussing a study of the formations on the borders of the land-pebble phosphate district to place previously done stratigraphic and economic studies of the district into a larger geologic setting.

The following report summarizes a reconnaissance for uranium in Alaska during 1955 that included airborne radiometric traverses, examination of radioactivity anomalies found during the airborne traverses, examination of prospector leads, and examination of areas that seemed geologically favorable for the occurrence of uranium.

From abstract: The Permian marine phosphorite deposits of the western United States were laid down in the Phosphoria formation and its partial stratigraphic equivalents over an area of about 135,000 square miles in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada. The deposits in the eastern part of the field lie on the western margin of the structurally simple North American craton.

Report describing the phosphorite deposits of the western United States with the objective of outlining features that are common to both the Kara Tau phosphorite deposits of Russia and the western United States deposits in an effort to define their origin.

From introduction: Objectives of the geologic studies and mapping in this area are: 1) to study and map geologic formations in which uranium ore may be found with special attention given to the Triassic Shinarump conglomerate, 2) to evaluate uranium deposits and to study local controls and habits of ore, 3) to collect and study geologic data basic to an understanding of regional geologic trends or controls in the distribution of the ore deposits, and 4) to determine the favorableness of the area for concealed deposits of uranium. The present report does not attempt to provide answers to all these objectives. Rather, it is a brief explanatory report to accompany the geologic map (fig. 2) and make it available in advance of the final report.

Report discussing the intensive search for uranium in the United States. This report contains information regarding common uranium minerals, types of uranium deposits, methods of prospecting for uranium, distribution of uranium deposits in the United States, and a conclusion.

From introduction: This report summarizes existing subsurface data concerning the thickness, character, and structure of upper Permian evaporites in part of Eddy County, N. Mex. The area of particular interest lies in central eastern Eddy County between Project Gnome site, in the center of sec.

Discussing a reconnaissance search made in New Mexico and adjacent states for uranium in coal and carbonaceous shale, chiefly of Mesozoic age, and black marine shale of Paleozoic age.

Report describing a nomogram for calculating percent composition from mineral-grain counts. From abstract: "A nomogram for calculating percent composition from mineral-grain counts reduces several of the more tedious arithmetical operations to two mechanical ones."

Report explaining a multiple cone sample splitter, which, in one operation, obtains representative sample fractions of 5-50 percent and increases time efficiency compared to conventional methods of sample splitting. Information regarding the machine's description, operation, and accuracy are given as well as a summary.

From introduction: The purpose of the mapping was to study the habits of the uranium minerals with relation to the geologic features of the White Canyon area, The work has been done by the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission. The Tiger claim is recommended for exploration by diamond drilling to obtain geologic information on the trend, length, depth, and width of the scour channel, and the relationship of uranium and copper minerals to the Shinarump-filled channel and to fractures.

Report discussing the properties of rutherfordine, diderichite, and clarkeite. The report contains information on each of these three, sharpite and studtite, and analytical methods used.

A report discussing a spectrophotometric study of thorium's reaction with morin in solutions of pH 2.0, which yields a single yellow complex with a ratio of 1 thorium:2 morin.

A report regarding the geology of the Shinrump No. 1 Uranium Mine, Seven Mile Canyon Area, Grand County, Utah. This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

From introduction: This report describes a numerical model that is rigorous in its solution to the equations yet simple enough that it may be used and understood by a knowledgeable ground-water hydrologist or engineer.

Report discussing "field and laboratory studies of ground-water conditions in the carnotite-bearing Morrison formation in southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah" with the objective of determining "possible relations between ground waters and the carnotite deposits."
