NASA HSRP Emissions Scenarios Committee meeting, June 7, 1993 (open access)

NASA HSRP Emissions Scenarios Committee meeting, June 7, 1993

This primary purpose of this plan is to establish a process to ensure data integrity in the process of assembling aircraft emission scenario data sets from component data developed and provided by various sources. A component data set is one for a particular aircraft use (i.e. scheduled airline). A scenario data set is an ensemble set for a particular time. A secondary purpose is to help identify possible discrepancies or inconsistencies in the component data sets developed elsewhere or in the scenario data sets. This plan covers activities involved in assembling aircraft emission scenario data sets and by the component data set producers in supplying information to support evaluation of the component data sets. It does not cover work by the data producers to validate their work in developing the component data sets or to establish the fundamental soundness of the component data sets.

Methodology for testing metal detectors using variables test data (open access)

Methodology for testing metal detectors using variables test data

By extracting and analyzing measurement (variables) data from portal metal detectors whenever possible instead of the more typical ``alarm``/``no-alarm`` (attributes or binomial) data, we can be more informed about metal detector health with fewer tests. This testing methodology discussed in this report is an alternative to the typical binomial testing and in many ways is far superior.

Improvement of the stability of the process for synthesizing chemically prepared varistor powder (open access)

Improvement of the stability of the process for synthesizing chemically prepared varistor powder

Varistor material is currently supplied by a single commercial source. The chem-prep varistor process was developed as a backup/replacement. With the transfer of the process to the production facility, studies were made to verify that the process is stable in manufacturing. Process variables are the precursors oxalic acid, NaOH, and ZnCl{sub 2}. Process stability was determined by comparing assay uncertainty region with precipitant/ZnCl{sub 2} compositional region meeting electrical and physical property specifications. Assay variability was assessed by conducting a round robin; standard deviations of repeated assays of the same sample was 0.1 wt% by the same labs; 0.1-0.4 wt% among laboratories. A mixture experiment was then conducted to assess the effects of the precipitants/ZnCl{sub 2} on breakdown field, nonlinearity coefficient, and bulk density. Results indicate that the chem-prep process can be stable; however the nominal target composition was on the edge of the composition region, and it was moved to the center of the large region with acceptable electrical and physical properties. Tests of unpotted component rods made from the new composition met all specifications. 8 refs, 10 figs, 10 tabs.

Ecological Risk Assessment Guidance for Preparation of Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study Work Plans (open access)

Ecological Risk Assessment Guidance for Preparation of Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study Work Plans

This guidance document (1) provides instructions on preparing the components of an ecological work plan to complement the overall site remedial assessment investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) work plan and (2) directs the user on how to implement ecological tasks identified in the plan. Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), as amended by the Superfired Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), an RI/FS work plan win have to be developed as part of the site-remediation scoping the process. Specific guidance on the RI/FS process and the preparation of work plans has been developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA 1988a). This document provides guidance to US Department of Energy (DOE) staff and contractor personnel for incorporation of ecological information into environmental remediation planning and decision making at CERCLA sites. An overview analysis of early ecological risk assessment methods (i.e., in the 1980s) at Superfund sites was conducted by the EPA (1989a). That review provided a perspective of attention given to ecological issues in some of the first RI/FS studies. By itself, that reference is of somewhat limited value; it does, however, establish a basis for comparison of past practices in ecological risk with current, …

Hanford wells (open access)

Hanford wells

Records describing wells located on or near the Hanford Site have been maintained by Pacific Northwest Laboratory and the operating contractor, Westinghouse Hanford Company. In support of the Ground-Water Surveillance Project, portions of the data contained in these records have been compiled into the following report, which is intended to be used by those needing a condensed, tabular summary of well location and basic construction information. The wells listed in this report were constructed over a period of time spanning almost 70 years. Data included in this report were retrieved from the Hanford Envirorunental Information System (HEIS) database and supplemented with information not yet entered into HEIS. While considerable effort has been made to obtain the most accurate and complete tabulations possible of the Hanford Site wells, omissions and errors may exist. This document does not include data on lithologic logs, ground-water analyses, or specific well completion details.

Imaging of surface structure with energy-dependent photoelectron diffraction (open access)

Imaging of surface structure with energy-dependent photoelectron diffraction

Energy-dependent photoelectron diffraction (EDPD) has been used to determine the surface structure of a surface alloy. Direct imaging has been achieved by Fourier transformation of experimental energy-dependent photoelectron diffraction data. This holographic method, based upon the intersection of contour arcs associated with each measurement direction, can provide vectorial atomic positions with atomic resolution. Experimental analysis is supported by Fourier transformation of simulations from multiple scattering calculations. The surface geometry of c(2x2) Au/Cu(001) has been imaged in an elementally-specific manner, with clear, non-model-dependent discrimination of the surface alloy over the overlayer structure.

Piping benchmark problems for the General Electric Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (open access)

Piping benchmark problems for the General Electric Advanced Boiling Water Reactor

To satisfy the need for verification of the computer programs and modeling techniques that will be used to perform the final piping analyses for an advanced boiling water reactor standard design, three benchmark problems were developed. The problems are representative piping systems subjected to representative dynamic loads with solutions developed using the methods being proposed for analysis for the advanced reactor standard design. It will be required that the combined license holders demonstrate that their solutions to these problems are in agreement with the benchmark problem set.

Development of improved processing and evaluation methods for high reliability structural ceramics for advanced heat engine applications, Phase 1. Final report (open access)

Development of improved processing and evaluation methods for high reliability structural ceramics for advanced heat engine applications, Phase 1. Final report

The program goals were to develop and demonstrate significant improvements in processing methods, process controls and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) which can be commercially implemented to produce high reliability silicon nitride components for advanced heat engine applications at temperatures to 1,370{degrees}C. The program focused on a Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}-4% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} high temperature ceramic composition and hot-isostatic-pressing as the method of densification. Stage I had as major objectives: (1) comparing injection molding and colloidal consolidation process routes, and selecting one route for subsequent optimization, (2) comparing the performance of water milled and alcohol milled powder and selecting one on the basis of performance data, and (3) adapting several NDE methods to the needs of ceramic processing. The NDE methods considered were microfocus X-ray radiography, computed tomography, ultrasonics, NMR imaging, NMR spectroscopy, fluorescent liquid dye penetrant and X-ray diffraction residual stress analysis. The colloidal consolidation process route was selected and approved as the forming technique for the remainder of the program. The material produced by the final Stage II optimized process has been given the designation NCX 5102 silicon nitride. According to plan, a large number of specimens were produced and tested during Stage III to establish a statistically robust room …
