Study of gamma-ray strength functions (open access)

Study of gamma-ray strength functions

The use of gamma-ray strength function systematics to calculate neutron capture cross sections and capture gamma-ray spectra is discussed. The ratio of the average capture width, GAMMA/sub ..gamma../-bar, to the average level spacing, D/sub obs/, both at the neutron separation energy, can be derived from such systematics with much less uncertainty than from separate systematics for values of GAMMA/sub ..gamma../-bar and D/sub obs/. In particular, the E1 gamma-ray strength function is defined in terms of the giant dipole resonance (GDR). The GDR line shape is modeled with the usual Lorentzian function and also with a new energy-dependent, Breit-Wigner (EDBW) function. This latter form is further parameterized in terms of two overlapping resonances, even for nuclei where photonuclear measurements do not resolve two peaks. In the mass ranges studied, such modeling is successful for all nuclei away from the N = 50 closed neutron shell. Near the N = 50 shell, a one-peak EDBW appears to be more appropriate. Examples of calculated neutron capture excitation functions and capture gamma-ray spectra using the EDBW form are given for target nuclei in the mass-90 region and also in the Ta-Au mass region. 20 figures.

An Examination of Locus of Control, Personality Traits, and Selected Demographic Variables as Factors Relating to the Success of First-Year Students in an Associate Degree Nursing Program (open access)

An Examination of Locus of Control, Personality Traits, and Selected Demographic Variables as Factors Relating to the Success of First-Year Students in an Associate Degree Nursing Program

Two major purposes existed for this study. The first purpose was to compare how persisters and nonpersisters in the first year of a two-year nursing program differed in locus of control, selected personality traits, and seven demographic variables. The second major purpose was to develop a predictive model for the persisters and the nonpersisters. The particular personality variables examined were intelligence, superego strength, extraversion, anxiety, tough poise, and independence as measured by the 16PF. The summary findings were that persisters had significantly higher scores on the NDRT and the B and G traits, significantly lower externality, and were generally younger with no previous nursing experience, and more likely not to have prekindergarten age children than the nonpersisters. The major significance of this research comes from its use of data gathered at the beginning of an educational program to make predictions which can be available to teachers, counselors, and administrators who may make use of the information to improve the chance potential nonpersisters have of completing the nursing program, or perhaps to assist students in reexamination of their career choice.

Innovation in Municipal Personnel Offices: An Exploratory Study of Two Federal Regions (open access)

Innovation in Municipal Personnel Offices: An Exploratory Study of Two Federal Regions

The purpose of this research is to investigate the innovation process in municipal personnel offices by answering three questions. What factors are related to the innovativeness of personnel offices? What factors are involved in the diffusion of personnel innovations from one city to another? What intraorganizational processes are involved in the decision to adopt personnel innovations? This research focuses on ten innovations selected by a panel of both personnel academicians and practitioners. Data collection involved a mail survey sent to all cities over 25,000 in the Chicago and Dallas federal regions and in-depth interviews with personnel directors in twenty-two cities. The implications of this research are both practical and theoretical. Officials interested in more complete innovation diffusion would do well to stress the nonradicalness of the change and any applicable governmental mandates. Federal, state, and regional governments can obviously improve both the availability and applicability of personnel information. In terms of theory, the research offers support to both the rational and power-based models of decision making and change, although the latter seems most appropriate in explaining radical change.

Review of Technology for Arctic Offshore Oil and Gas Recovery (open access)

Review of Technology for Arctic Offshore Oil and Gas Recovery

The technical background briefing report is the first step in the preparation of a plan for engineering research oriented toward Arctic offshore oil and gas recovery. A five-year leasing schedule for the ice-prone waters of the Arctic offshore is presented, which also shows the projected dates of the lease sale for each area. The estimated peak production rates for these areas are given. There is considerable uncertainty for all these production estimates, since no exploratory drilling has yet taken place. A flow chart is presented which relates the special Arctic factors, such as ice and permafrost, to the normal petroleum production sequence. Some highlights from the chart and from the technical review are: (1) in many Arctic offshore locations the movement of sea ice causes major lateral forces on offshore structures, which are much greater than wave forces; (2) spray ice buildup on structures, ships and aircraft will be considerable, and must be prevented or accommodated with special designs; (3) the time available for summer exploratory drilling, and for deployment of permanent production structures, is limited by the return of the pack ice. This time may be extended by ice-breaking vessels in some cases; (4) during production, icebreaking workboats will …

Gravity survey of the Escalante Desert and vicinity, in Iron and Washington Counties, Utah (open access)

Gravity survey of the Escalante Desert and vicinity, in Iron and Washington Counties, Utah

During the summers of 1978 and 1979, a total of 436 new gravity stations were taken in the southern part of the Escalante Desert and vicinity in Iron and Washington counties, Utah. The new stations were combined with 917 other stations taken in previous surveys, and a total of 1353 stations were used in this study, covering an area of about 2700 mi/sup 2/ (7000 km/sup 2/). The purpose of the study was to help evaluate the potential of geothermal resources within the survey area, which includes the Newcastle and Lund KGRA's. All the gravity data were terrain corrected out to a radial distance of 166.7 km from each station, using a computer terrain-correction program. The data were compiled and presented as a complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map with a 2-mgal contour interval. A geologic interpretation of the gravity data was made qualitatively from the gravity map and also quantitatively from four easterly trending gravity profiles taken across the area.

Metal-Tyrosyl Coordination in Transferrin. 2. Difference Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Di-, Tri-, and Tetravalent Metal Ions With Ethylene-Bis(0-Dydroxyphenylgly-Cine). (open access)

Metal-Tyrosyl Coordination in Transferrin. 2. Difference Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Di-, Tri-, and Tetravalent Metal Ions With Ethylene-Bis(0-Dydroxyphenylgly-Cine).

In order to probe the metal ion coordination site in the human iron transport protein, transferrin, the complexation of a series of metal ions by the chelate analogue ethylene-bis(o-hydroxyphenylglycine) (EHPG) has been studied by difference uv spectroscopy, in which {Delta}{epsilon} values per coordinated phenol have been determined for the metal complex versus the protonated form of the ligand. With the exception of the.Cu {sup 2+} complex, maxima are observed at 242 nm and 290 nm with a minimum at 269 nm. The {Delta}{epsilon} values at 242 fall into two groups. Complexes of divalent metal ions (Zn{sup 2+}, Cu{sup 2+}, Cd{sup 2+}) have 6£ values ranging from 5000 to 6600 M{sup -1} cm{sup -1} whereas larger {Delta}{epsilon} values are observed for complexes of tri- and tetra- valent metal ions (Th{sup 4+}, Ga{sup 3+}, Fe{sup 3+}, • Ho{sup 3+}, Eu{sup 3+}, Er{sup 3+}, Tb{sup 2+}, VO{sup 2+}), 7400 - 8700 M{sup -1} cm{sup -1}. It is known that the transferrin binding sites contain tyrosyl residues, but there has been considerable debate concerning the precise number of tyrosine groups which bind to specific metal ions. Since it has been the common practice to assume the {Delta}{epsilon} values for coordination by all metal ions …

The Prediction of Academic Achievement of Pre-Nursing and Nursing Students by Using Attitudinal and Preferential Methods (open access)

The Prediction of Academic Achievement of Pre-Nursing and Nursing Students by Using Attitudinal and Preferential Methods

This study explored the feasibility of predicting academic achievement in prerequisite Anatomy-Physiology Classes for prospective nursing students and Medical Surgical Nursing Classes for students enrolled in a diploma program. This was accomplished by using three instruments that measure the attitudes of nursing students about the nursing profession or preferences towards learning environments . The purposes of this study were (1) to determine if the subgroup or total scores were correlated with final examination scores for each class, (2) to determine if the subgroup or total scores interacted with one another to increase the power of prediction, and (3) to compare the effects of different teaching styles, upon the instruments used to measure attitudes and preferences
