Selective paint development. Technical progress report, 5 December 1978-31 July 1979

Eighteen hundred square feet of aluminum foil were coated with thickness-sensitive selective paint. The feasibility of a high speed, large-scale roller coating technique was demonstrated. Coating thermal stability, weathering and humidity resistance, and effects of pigment particle size on coating optical properties were studied. Thickness-insensitive paint with urethane binder was evaluated. A medium scale (1 kg) of thickness-insensitive paint solution was prepared which achieved an ..cap alpha../sub s/ of 0.90 and epsilon of 0.35.

Nonlinear wave evolution in VLASOV plasma: a lie-transform analysis (open access)

Nonlinear wave evolution in VLASOV plasma: a lie-transform analysis

Nonlinear wave evolution in Vlasov plasma is analyzed using the Lie transform, a powerful mathematical tool which is applicable to Hamiltonian systems. The first part of this thesis is an exposition of the Lie transform. Dewar's general Lie transform theory is explained and is used to construct Deprit's Lie transform perturbation technique. The basic theory is illustrated by simple examples.

Characterization of the Hanford 300 Area Burial Grounds. Task III: fluid transport and modeling (open access)

Characterization of the Hanford 300 Area Burial Grounds. Task III: fluid transport and modeling

In Task III, Fluid Transport and Modeling, a computer model was developed and applied to the 300 Area Burial Grounds to analyze the influence of potential evaporation and rainfall patterns on drainage. The model describes one-dimensional unsaturated flow. Fluid transport equations were evaluated to describe the driving forces of fluid flow. The data indicate that the major processes are evaporative drying, capillarity, and gravity flow. Thermally induced transport does not appear significant in the subsurface sediments of the area. Several empirical evaporation methods are available for assessing potential evaporation/evapotranspiration. Four methods were used with the unsaturated flow model. Ultimately, the Blaney-Criddle method was chosen for subsequent simulation examples because it relies only on the climatic data available and gave results comparable to the other methods tested. Simulations showed that a dry layer formation is important in controlling the soil-water balance in the profile. The surface dry layer acts as a mulch to retard the evaporative water losses and increase water storage. The most important climatic factor in determining drainage appears to be yearly rainfall distribution. When rainfall is distributed in fall or winter, during periods of low potential evaporation, both water storage and drainage are increased. Summer showers, on the …

Aqueous solutions database to high temperatures and pressures: NaCl solutions

A survey is made of available experimental data on sodium chloride solutions which are used in geothermal energy exploration and development for electrical power production and direct use. The data are classified as thermodynamic, transport and physical; they are useful in the design and development of a geothermal area from brine production through utilization, to brine disposal. An ideal data system for geothermal energy is described.

The Effect of the Multiple Talent Approach to Teaching on the Creative Thinking Performance of Elementary Students (open access)

The Effect of the Multiple Talent Approach to Teaching on the Creative Thinking Performance of Elementary Students

The purposes of this study were to ascertain the relationship between the treatment and creativity post-test gains with independent variables of sex, grade, group, and Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills total battery scores. Major conclusions include the following. 1. Girls appear to benefit more than boys from the Multiple Talent Approach to Teaching. 2. Fifth grade students appear to benefit more than third grade students from the Multiple Talent Approach to Teaching. 3. The creativity test score gains favoring the experimental students seem to justify the conclusion that it is potentially possible to enhance creative thinking through a teaching process.
