Levels of chemical contaminants in nonoccupationally exposed U. S. residents (open access)

Levels of chemical contaminants in nonoccupationally exposed U. S. residents

Data are presented on the levels of all chemical contaminants resulting from environmental pollution which have been found in human tissues including blood, urine, breast milk, and tissue samples obtained at autopsy. Most data results from specific surveys to determine health hazards. The roles of trace elements and recognition of the need to determine baseline levels of chemicals introduced into the environment are factors which have motivated surveys by individual investigators. Thus, most data on chemicals in human tissues record levels of pesticides (e.g., DDT and metabolites), levels of trace metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, or levels of nutritionally essential elements such as zinc, copper, manganese, and fluoride. Data available on iron and calcium are not presented as their presence in the environment is generally not considered hazardous. Data on several uncommon chemicals, such as indium and ytterbium, are included basically as items of interest and to further document their presence in healthy individuals. Baseline data were presented where available to provide perspective as to chemical levels which might be expected under conditions where exposure could be considered normal or not directly related to a pollutant source. Nearly 600 cited surveys or investigations, most of which were reported …

Analysis of the LOFT Modular Drag Disc Turbine Transducer (MDTT) spring for compressive buckling (open access)

Analysis of the LOFT Modular Drag Disc Turbine Transducer (MDTT) spring for compressive buckling

The LOFT Modular Drag Disc Turbine Transducer (MDTT) springs (for range 2, rhoV/sup 2/ = 4900 lbm/ft-sec/sup 2/) were analyzed to determine the static rhoV/sup 2/ load needed to cause a buckling failure. The static load needed to cause elastic buckling was found to be equivalent to a rhoV/sup 2/ value of 431,000 lbm/ft-sec/sup 2/ according to classical buckling theory, but could be as low as rhoV/sup 2/ = 100,000 lbm/ft-sec/sup 2/ due to uncertain end fixity and other spring imperfections.

Stress analysis of the LOFT modular DTT flowmeter for LOCE transients (L1-5 and L2-4) (open access)

Stress analysis of the LOFT modular DTT flowmeter for LOCE transients (L1-5 and L2-4)

An analysis is presented of combined stresses in the LOFT Modular DTT for specified temperature gradients. All combined stress intensities are shown to stay within applicable allowable stress intensities. A fatigue analysis is also presented which indicates that the LOFT Modular DTT will withstand 70,000 blowdown cycles. The LOFT Modular DTT is shown to meet the Class 1 stress requirments. A stress analysis of the tab region of the newly designed MDTT tab-type shroud is included. This stress analysis shows that the Class 1 stress requirements are met by the tab-type MDTT shroud design and that this design imposes no fatigue life limitation on the MDTT.

Survey and screening of intermediate-size photovoltaic total energy and electric applications (open access)

Survey and screening of intermediate-size photovoltaic total energy and electric applications

One of the principal objectives of this photovoltaic mission analysis effort has been to identify and evaluate applications for photovoltaic solar energy conversion that could lead to significant contributions to the national energy supply and that would provide attractive opportunities for application experiments aimed at stimulating the adoption of photovoltaic technology. The scope of the study has included applications both for electric-only photovoltaic (PV) systems and for photovoltaic total energy systems (PTES), i.e., systems that provide both photovoltaic electricity and solar thermal energy to meet all or part of the energy demand at a single load point or a group of related load points. In either case, both flat-plate and concentrating systems have been considered and it has been assumed that the thermal energy is collected in and transported by the fluid used in an active cooling system for the photovoltaic cells. Because the efficiency of photovoltaic devices decreases rapidly with increasing temperature and because the operational lifetime of such devices is reduced by prolonged operation at elevated temperatures, a practical upper limit of about 200/sup 0/C (400/sup 0/F) was assumed for the temperature at which arrays can be allowed to be operated. This limitation, in turn, places an upper …

LOFT downcomer instrumentation assembly analysis (open access)

LOFT downcomer instrumentation assembly analysis

A supplemental stress analysis of the LOFT Downcomer Instrumentation Assembly (DIA) has been completed in accordance with the stress requirements of Section III of the ASME Code. Both thermal loads, due to LOCE and operating conditions, and fluid loads were considered. The following conclusions were made: (1) Inconel 600 is an acceptable material for the pressure tubes. (2) The flowmeter can be attached to the DIA with /sup 1///sub 4/-inch diameter, SA-193 type B8M screws. They should be lubricated with two coats of Neolube and torqued to 1.25 ft-lbs. This applies to all of the screws attaching the flowmeter to the DIA. As an alterative, SA-453, grade 600 screws may be used. They should be coated with 2 coats of Neolube and torqued to 4.9 ft-lbs (4.5 ft-lbs is acceptable). (3) The method of mounting the instrument leads and the pressure tubes is adequate.

Determination of continuous gamma-ray spectra over the energy range 0. 1 to 8 MeV. [RETECTUR code] (open access)

Determination of continuous gamma-ray spectra over the energy range 0. 1 to 8 MeV. [RETECTUR code]

An experimental facility was established at LLL to characterize radiation fields produced by a variety of sources and transmitted through various shielding materials. Specific techniques for acquiring and reducing continuous gamma-ray energy spectra are discussed including NaI(Tl) detectors. Use of several detector sizes allowed study of a wide variety of source intensities and calculation of response matrices for a number of collimated detector configurations. A computer program to perform the data reduction by an iterative unfolding process is described. The reduction technique discloses the continuous gamma-ray energy spectrum over the range 0.1 to 8 MeV as opposed to the traditional peak intensity analysis. 11 references.
