Predicting cancer outcome (open access)

Predicting cancer outcome

We read with interest the paper by Michiels et al on the prediction of cancer with microarrays and the commentary by Ioannidis listing the potential as well as the limitations of this approach (February 5, p 488 and 454). Cancer is a disease characterized by complex, heterogeneous mechanisms and studies to define factors that can direct new drug discovery and use should be encouraged. However, this is easier said than done. Casti teaches that a better understanding does not necessarily extrapolate to better prediction, and that useful prediction is possible without complete understanding (1). To attempt both, explanation and prediction, in a single nonmathematical construct, is a tall order (Figure 1).

Measurement of the p - anti-p ---> W gamma + X cross section at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV and WW gamma anomalous coupling limits (open access)

Measurement of the p - anti-p ---> W gamma + X cross section at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV and WW gamma anomalous coupling limits

The WW{gamma} triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p{bar p} {yields} {ell}{nu}{gamma} + X({ell} = e, {mu}) events at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb{sup -1} delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching fraction for p{bar p} {yields} W({gamma}) + X {yields} {ell}{nu}{gamma} + X with E{sub T}{sup {gamma}} > 8 GeV and {Delta}R{sub {ell}{gamma}} > 0.7 is 14.8 {+-} 1.6(stat) {+-} 1.0(syst) {+-} 1.0(lum) pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are -0.88 < {Delta}{kappa}{sub {gamma}} < 0.96 and -0.20 < {lambda}{sub {gamma}} < 0.20.

Hadronic mass spectrum analysis of D+ ---> K- pi+ mu+ nu decay and measurement of the K*(892)0 mass and width (open access)

Hadronic mass spectrum analysis of D+ ---> K- pi+ mu+ nu decay and measurement of the K*(892)0 mass and width

We present a K{pi} mass spectrum analysis of the four-body semileptonic charm decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}{nu} in the range of 0.65 GeV/c{sup 2} < m{sub K{pi}} < 1.5 GeV/c{sup 2}. We observe a non-resonant contribution of 5.30 {+-} 0.74{sub -0.51}{sup +0.99}% with respect to the total D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}{nu} decay. For the K*(892){sup 0} resonance, we obtain a mass of 895.41 {+-} 0.32{sub -0.36}{sup +0.35} NeV/c{sup 2}, a width of 47.79 {+-} 0.86{sub -1.1}{sup +1.3} MeV/c{sup 2}, and a Blatt-Weisskopf damping factor parameter of 3.96 {+-} 0.54{sub -0.90}{sup +0.72} GeV{sup -1}. We also report 90% CL upper limits of 1.60% and 1.90% for the branching ratios {Lambda}(D{sup +} {yields} {bar K}*(1680){sup 0} {mu}{sup +}{nu})/{Lambda}(D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}{nu}) and {Lambda}(D{sup +} {yields} {bar K}*{sub 0}(1430){sup 0}) {mu}{sup +}{nu}/{Lambda}(D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}) {mu}{sup +}{nu}, respectively.

Workshop on Socioeconomic Research Issues for the Gulf of Mexico OCS Region

The objective was to provide guidance for studies planning for the next five years. The workshop began with the premise that much has been accomplished during the last decade of MMS socioeconomic research and that it is time to assess future directions for the program. The workshop sought advice, rather than consensus, on key questions, useful analytical approaches, and critical information needs.

Restart of the chemical preparation process for the fabrication of ZnO varistors for ferroelectric neutron generator power supplies. (open access)

Restart of the chemical preparation process for the fabrication of ZnO varistors for ferroelectric neutron generator power supplies.

To date, all varistors used in ferroelectric neutron generators have been supplied from a single, proprietary source, General Electric Corporate Research and Development (GE CR&D). To protect against the vulnerability of a single source, Sandia initiated a program in the early 1980's to develop a second source for this material. A chemical preparation process for making homogeneous, high purity ZnO-based varistor powder was generated, scaled to production quantities, and transferred to external suppliers. In 1992, the chem-prep varistor program was suspended when it appeared there was sufficient inventory of GE CR&D material to supply ferroelectric neutron generator production for many years. In 1999, neutron generator production schedules increased substantially, resulting in a predicted exhaustion of the existing supply of varistor material within five years. The chem-prep program was restarted in January, 2000. The goals of the program were to (1) duplicate the chem-prep powder synthesis process that had been qualified for WR production, (2) demonstrate sintered billets from the chem-prep powder met requirements, (3) develop a process for rod fabrication and demonstrate that all component specifications could be met, and (4) optimize the process from powder synthesis through component fabrication for full-scale production. The first three of these goals have …

Energy Strategic Planning & Self-Sufficiency Project: Final Technical Report

This report provides information regarding options available, their advantages and disadvantages, and the costs for pursuing activities to advance Smith River Rancheria toward an energy program that reduces their energy costs, allows greater self-sufficiency and stimulates economic development and employment opportunities within and around the reservation. The primary subjects addressed in this report are as follow: (1) Baseline Assessment of Current Energy Costs--An evaluation of the historical energy costs for Smith River was conducted to identify the costs for each component of their energy supply to better assess changes that can be considered for energy cost reductions. (2) Research Viable Energy Options--This includes a general description of many power generation technologies and identification of their relative costs, advantages and disadvantages. Through this research the generation technology options that are most suited for this application were identified. (3) Project Development Considerations--The basic steps and associated challenges of developing a generation project utilizing the selected technologies are identified and discussed. This included items like selling to third parties, wheeling, electrical interconnections, fuel supply, permitting, standby power, and transmission studies. (4) Energy Conservation--The myriad of federal, state and utility programs offered for low-income weatherization and utility bill payment assistance are identified, their qualification …
