Continental Shelf Processes Effecting the Oceanography of the South Atlantic Bight. Hydrography of Onslow Bay, North Carolina: September 1975 (OBIS II). Progress Report
Over the course of OBIS II, 3-14 September, two intrusion cores were observed. One was apparently trapped nearshore over much of the study period, but as time went on, it either dissipated, moved too far shoreward or moved too far laterally along the shelf to be detected by the existing observational grid. The other (later) intrusion was first detected on 5-7 September and was observed to be moving into the Bay from the southeast over the remainder of the study period. Plots of the horizontal temperature and salinity distribution were suggestive of these phenomenon by means of the higher salinity-lower temperature relationship. However, the real confirmation rests in the vertical distributions of sigma-t and chlorophyll presented in conjunction with the Bio and Hydrogrids, and the T--S plot which reveals slope waters on the shelf. The intruded waters were not of low enough temperature to carry high nutrient concentrations onto the shelf for study. However, the general results of this study tend to confirm the view that our basic grid array and methods are compatible with measurement of the processes we initially set out to study. Analyses of these data relative to the current meter data will allow a nearly complete …

Magma Energy Research Project. Project summary, July 1, 1974--June 30, 1975
The objective of the Magma Energy Research Project now under way at Sandia Laboratories is to investigate the feasibility of extracting energy directly from deeply buried circulating magma sources. Project plans describe a concept whereby a fully closed heat exchanger system is inserted directly into such a magma source to allow the heat energy to be brought to the surface with minimal environmental impact. A summary of previous efforts is given. The achievements and future plans for source location and definition, source tapping, magma characterization, magma materials compatibilities studies, and energy extraction studies are outlined. European dry cooling tower operating experience
Interviews were held with representatives of major plants and equipment manufacturers to obtain current information on operating experience with dry cooling towers in Europe. The report documents the objectives, background, and organizational details of the study, and presents an itemized account of contacts made to obtain information. Plant selection was based on a merit index involving thermal capacity and length of service. A questionnaire was used to organize operational data, when available, into nine major categories of experience. Information was also solicited concerning the use of codes and standards to ensure the achievement of cooling tower performance. Several plant operators provided finned-tube samples for metallographic analysis. Additionally, information on both operating experience and developing technology was supplied by European technical societies and research establishments. Information obtained from these contacts provides an updated and representative sample of European experience with dry cooling towers, which supplements some of the detailed reviews already available in the literature. In addition, the study presents categorized operating experience with installations which have not been reviewed so extensively, but nevertheless, have significant operational histories when ranked by the merit index. The contacts and interviews reported in the survey occurred between late March and October 1975. The study …
