Thesis examines the life of prolific composer Sergei Prokofiev and his work for the motion picture Alexander Nevsky. Gary Langford analyzes Prokofiev's use of the brass section in his compositions for the film.

"Harry Partch's Keyboard Innovation" is a computer-assisted demonstration that introduces the tuning system used primarily by the twentieth-century American composer, Harry Partch. The multimedia product was developed in Director 6.0, and it includes sound and video clips from CDs and videocassettes of Partch's works produced by Phillip Blackburn and distributed by the American Composers Forum. The content of the demonstration involves a 43-tone microtonal tuning system and its application in the music literature. This demonstration will discuss the chronological order in which these prototypes were developed and also includes samples of the tuning of notes in Partch's scale that the novice can experiment with interactively. These tones were synthesized using the Csound scores shown in Appendix B. Materials for this demonstration are based on Harry Partch's Genesis of a Music.

The rheology of 1-8% hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) solutions has been studied in the temperature range of 20-45 degrees Celsius. The results showed that the relative viscosity at each HPC concentration decreases with increasing temperature. The relative viscosity decreases drastically at about 43 degrees Celsius due to a phase transition. The influence of anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), induced gelation of a 2% HPC solution. The HPC solutions gelled at surfactant SDS concentrations ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 critical micelle concentration (CMC). The gelation of the HPC/SDS hydrogel is explained in the surfactant SDD - bridged HPC linear polymer chains. The complex viscosity - concentration profile was determined below the CMC of the SDS - water pair. The peak itself was a function of frequency indicating the presence of two relaxation times within the gelled network.

The purpose of this project was to develop a body of work in which the content has probable, if not definite, cross-cultural application. It was my intent to analyze images for their content and underlying themes. This collection of "image content" was to be used in the production of a body of work which hopefully would transcend cultural bias or limitations. I consulted art and anthropological texts, books, and periodicals (listed in bibliography) which contained images produced by different cultures.

This paper explores the development of the hautboy, or early oboe, and highlights the prominent oboe virtuosi of eighteenth-century England. Jennifer Bauer Morgan explains the lives and abilities of the performers and the evolution of the oboe.

This paper presents a brief history of the alto flute and discusses its use in the orchestral literature of European, Russian and American composers. Analysis of selected passage from various works determine its use as either a solo instrument, doubling or reinforcing voice, or as part of an accompanying line.

The focus of this creative project was the production and presentation of electronic imagery generated by personal computers and peripherals. By it's nature, electronic imagery is dependent on light. I proposed that the exhibition project would include computer graphics images presented in a variety of formats, both static and moving.
