Crystal field interaction in the pyrochlore magnet Ho{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}. (open access)

Crystal field interaction in the pyrochlore magnet Ho{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}.

Neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy has been employed to study the crystal field interaction in the pyrochlore titanate Ho{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}. The crystal field parameters and corresponding energy level scheme have been determined from a profile fit to the observed neutron spectra. The groundstate is a well separated E{sub g} doublet with a strong Ising like anisotropy, which can give rise to titration in the pyrochlore lattice. Using the crystal field parameters determined for the Ho compound as an estimate of the crystal field interaction in other pyrochlore magnets, we also find the Ising type behavior for Dy. In contrast, the almost planar like anisotropy found for Er and Yb prevents frustration, because of the continuous range of possible spin orientations in this case.

PETROLEUM RESIDUA SOLUBILITY PARAMETER/POLARITY MAP: STABILITY STUDIES OF RESIDUA PYROLYSIS (open access)

PETROLEUM RESIDUA SOLUBILITY PARAMETER/POLARITY MAP: STABILITY STUDIES OF RESIDUA PYROLYSIS

A new molecular weight/polarity map based on the Scatchard-Hildebrand solubility equation has been developed for petroleum residua. A series of extractions are performed with solvents of increasing solubility parameter, and the fractions are analyzed by vapor pressure osmometry for number average molecular weight and by analytical-scale size exclusion chromatography for molecular weight spread. Work was performed for a heavy oil material subjected to three increasing severities of thermal treatment prior to and through the onset of coke formation. The results are diagnostic of the layers of solvations by resin-type molecules around a central asphaltene core. Two additional stability diagnostic methods were also used. These were the Heithaus titration ''P-index'' and Gaestel ''G'' index, which have been applied to paving asphalts for decades. The Heithaus titration involves the titration of three toluene solutions of a residuum at three concentrations with a poor solvent, such as isooctane, to the point of asphaltene flocculation. In the present work, the significance of the data are developed in terms of the Hildebrand solubility parameter. The Heithaus results are combined with data from the new molecular weight/polarity map. The solubility parameters for the toluene-soluble asphaltene components are measured, and the solubility parameters of the maltenes can …

Choices for A Brighter Future: Perspectives on Renewable Energy (open access)

Choices for A Brighter Future: Perspectives on Renewable Energy

The report discusses the perspectives on the evolving U.S. electricity future, the renewable electric technology portfolio, the regional outlook, and the opportunities to move forward. Renewables are at a critical juncture as the domestic electricity marketplace moves toward an era of increased choice and greater diversity. The cost and performance of these technologies have improved dramatically over the past decade, yet their market penetration has stalled as the power industry grapples with the implications of the emerging competitive marketplace. Renewable energy technologies already contribute to the global energy mix and are ready to make an even greater contribution in the future. However, the renewables industry faces critical market uncertainties, both domestically and internationally, as policy commitments to renewables at both the federal and state levels are being reshaped to match the emerging competitive marketplace. The energy decisions that we make, or fail to make, today will have long-lasting implications. We can act now to ensure that renewable energy will play a major role in meeting the challenges of the evolving energy future. We have the power to choose.

PV energy program overview FY 1998 (open access)

PV energy program overview FY 1998

In this overview, the goals that were met in FY 1998 are highlighted along with progress that was made toward long-term goals for research, technology development, and applications. The manufacture, sale, and use of photovoltaic (PV) devices to generate electricity directly from sunlight has become a billion-dollar industry worldwide. The production capacity for PV modules in the US had doubled between 1993 and 1997. While continuing research to improve technology, one must work with industry to move this technology from the laboratory to the marketplace.

Radiative Decays, Nonet Symmetry and SU(3) Breaking (open access)

Radiative Decays, Nonet Symmetry and SU(3) Breaking

We re-examine the problem of simultaneously describing in a consistent way all radiative and leptonic decays of light mesons (V {yields} P{gamma}, P {yields} V{gamma}, P {yields} {gamma}{gamma}, V {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}). For this purpose, we rely on the Hidden Local Symmetry model in both its anomalous and non-anomalous sectors. We show that the SU(3) symmetry breaking scheme proposed by Bando, Kugo and Yamawaki, supplemented with nonet symmetry breaking in the pseudoscalar sector, allows one to reach a nice agreement with all data, except for the K*{sup {+-}} radiative decay. An extension of this breaking pattern allows one to account for this particular decay mode too. Considered together, the whole set of radiative decays provides a pseudoscalar mixing angle {theta}{sub P} {approx_equal} and a value for {theta}{sub V} which is {approx_equal} 3{sup o} from that of ideal mixing. We also show that it is impossible, in a practical sense, to disentangle the effects of nonet symmetry breaking and those of glue inside the {eta}{prime}, using only light meson decays.
