Trace Characterization: Chemical and Physical

From Introduction: "This symposium focuses attention on the growing awareness of the necessity for developing and using better methods for characterizing solids. Many of the most interesting properties of solids depend directly upon these small concentrations of impurities and defects, and the illustration of this is a principal theme of this paper."

Comparison of Various Heat Exchangers for Liquid-Metal Nuclear Turbojet Over Range of Flight and Operating Conditions (open access)

Comparison of Various Heat Exchangers for Liquid-Metal Nuclear Turbojet Over Range of Flight and Operating Conditions

Memorandum presenting an analysis of a large number of liquid-metal-to-air heat-exchanger cores for the nuclear-powered liquid-metal turbojet cycle to determine which types yield the best overall net thrust per total engine weight. The performances of all exchangers considered were initially evaluated at a median condition. The performance of the best of each of the four types was compared with that of a shell-and-tube exchanger with the air flowing through the tubes, operating at the same condition.

A Transonic Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Trim and Dynamic Response Characteristics of the Horizontal Tail of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Complete Tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 Airplane (open access)

A Transonic Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Trim and Dynamic Response Characteristics of the Horizontal Tail of a 1/7-Scale Model of the Complete Tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 Airplane

"An investigation was made of the trim and dynamic response characteristics of the free-floating horizontal tail of a 1/7-scale model of the complete tail of the Grumman XF10F-1 airplane in the Langley 8-foot transonic tunnel at Mach numbers up to 1.13. The complete tail was mounted in the tunnel on a 3 degree conical support body. Various configurations were investigated. A loss in damping of the horizontal tail at transonic speeds was shown by both tunnel and flight tests" (p. 1).

On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows (open access)

On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows

An approximate Boltzmann equation, known as the single relaxation model is studied here. This equation is linearized and the fundamental solution is considered. Following N. Grad, the solution, asymptotic in small values of the ratio of mean-free-path to distance from the origin, is sought. It can be shown that the fundamental solution itself gives the asymptotic description of the flow field past an object. This solution gives the asymptotic description when the distance from the origin is much greater than either the mean-free-path or the body size. This is true independently of the Knudsen number.
