High-Energy Beta Decay of Light Elements (open access)

High-Energy Beta Decay of Light Elements

The beta decay of the radioactive members of the mass-eight and -twelve triads has been studied with a spiral-orbit spectrometer having a 1.3% resolution. The end point, half-life and log-ft values respectively are: for N{sup 12}, 16.37 {+-} 0.06 MeV, 11.43 {+-} 0.05 milliseconds, and 4.17; for B{sup 12}, 13.40 {+-} 0.05 MeV, 20.6 {+-} 0.2 msec and 4.11; for B{sup 8}, 14 MeV (broad), 0.75 {+-} 0.02 sec, and 5.72; and for Li{sup 8}, 13 Mev (broad), 0.87 {+-} 0.01 sec, and 5.67. The mass excesses in millimass units are: for N{sup 12}, 22.48 {+-} 0.06; for B{sup 12}, 18.19 {+-} 0.06; for B{sup 8}, 27.08 {+-} 0.13; and for Li{sup 8}, 24.97 {+-} 0.09. The shapes of the Kurie function for the mirror pairs indicate positron and electron transitions to the same levels of the daughter nuclide, with greater percentages in the positron branches relative to the ground-state transitions because of the higher energy available. The Li{sup 8} and B{sup 8} shapes are consistent with the shape of the alpha spectrum following the decay of the Be{sup 8} daughter. Less than 1% of the Li{sup 8} transition and less than 5% of the B{sup 8} transition go to …

Toxicity Studies of Aquatic Actinomycetes (open access)

Toxicity Studies of Aquatic Actinomycetes

Since Actinomycetes have been isolated from finished public drinking water, it is believed that the organisms are unaffected by the chlorination and flocculation of water treatment plants and pass as spores through the filters into the general distribution system. For this reason it was deemed imperative to study the toxic effects of these organisms.

A Method of Analyzing Linear Perspective for Presentation to Junior and Senior High School Students (open access)

A Method of Analyzing Linear Perspective for Presentation to Junior and Senior High School Students

The general purpose of this study is to develop a series of peep shows, or visual models, which will enable the young student to understand what the laws of perspective are, how they were found, and why his drawings will appear to have three dimensions if he follows the rules. The study is based upon a widely accepted idea--that it is much easier for most people to understand and remember a principle when they can actually see how it works. When rules are merely memorized, one is not assisted by reason, which is essential for useful retention.

Techniques and Content in Thornton Wilder: a Critical Re-Evaluation

The aim of this paper is not to disprove previous interpretations of Wilder's work, but to enlarge on them. The problem is not that the opinions of the early critics and many of the later ones were incorrect; the were merely incomplete. This paper shall attempt to show that Wilder's major thematic material falls into two interlocking and overlapping groups. Repeatedly Wilder deals with the relationship of man to something beyond himself, and the relationship of man to individual man and to mankind.

Television in Education: a Survey of Current Practices and a Consideration of Its Applicability to the Field of Music (open access)

Television in Education: a Survey of Current Practices and a Consideration of Its Applicability to the Field of Music

The use of television as an aid to music education is a relatively new and unexplored field. It is so new, in fact, that to undertake a study of what has been accomplished until the present may seem at first rather premature and unfruitful. It is my belief, however, that if television is to become the prominent factor in education that has been predicted, there is a definite need for a study of what has been done to date toward the development of this new medium. This will provide the background and foundation for further experiment and use. The study shall include, therefore, a brief history of television itself, general educational experiments in television, experiments in televised music education, problems involved in presenting musical television programs, and suggestions for the development of this newest of teaching aids.

A Comparison of Insurace Curricula of Accredited Colleges and Universities in Texas with the Curricula Recommended by 100 Selected Insurance Companies Operating in the State of Texas (open access)

A Comparison of Insurace Curricula of Accredited Colleges and Universities in Texas with the Curricula Recommended by 100 Selected Insurance Companies Operating in the State of Texas

This study was undertaken to determine whether the curricula of the colleges and universities are meeting the needs of the growing insurance industry. This study will determine, first, whether the insurance curricula of the accredited four-year colleges and universities in the state of Texas fulfill the needs of the insurance industry as reported by 100 selected insurance companies operating in the state of Texas. Second, this study will compare the insurance program at North Texas State College with the programs of other accredited colleges and universities in Texas. Third, from the foregoing analysis this study will attempt to determine whether the insurance program at North Texas State College could be improved. As a final consideration, this study will determine whether the insurance companies desire colleges and universities to offer special short courses for their insurance personnel.

An Evaluative Study of Physical Education Activity Programs for Boys in Selected Junior High Schools of Texas (open access)

An Evaluative Study of Physical Education Activity Programs for Boys in Selected Junior High Schools of Texas

The problem undertaken in this study was to evaluate the activity phase of boys' physical education programs in selected junior high schools of Texas. As a result of visitation and observation in a number of public junior high schools in the capacity of supervising teacher for physical education majors, it appears that many physical education programs were little more than loosely supervised play periods. Apparently there was room for improvement of these programs but a method for making judgments and recommendations required some type of measuring device. However, an examination of several existing measuring techniques failed to reveal any one devoted to the junior high school level or one concerned primarily with the activity program. As a means of improving existing programs, it was concluded that some new form of evaluation must be designed.

Disintegration of Helium by 300-Mev Neutrons (open access)

Disintegration of Helium by 300-Mev Neutrons

An investigation of the inelastic and elastic reactions between high- energy neutrons nnd He nuclei was conducted with a cloud chamber filled with He and operating in a pulsed magnetic field of 21,700 gauss. Neutrons produced by bombardment of a 1/2-in. LiD target with 340-Mev protons in the 184-in. synchrocyclotron were collimated and passed through the 22-inch expansion cloud chamber, which was filled with He gas to a total pressure of 89.8 cm Hg. Exclusive of meson-producing reactions, the possible reactions are: Inelastic, He/ sup 4/(n,pn)t, He/sup 4/(n,d)t, He/sup 4/(n,2np)d, He/sup 4/(n, dn)d, He/sup 4/ (n,2n2p) n, He/sup 4/(n, 2n) He/s up 3/; and Elastic, He/sup 4/(n,n)He/sup 4/. The total number of events, for incident neutrons above 160 Mev, was normalized to the interpolated n-He/sup 4/ total cross section at 300 Mev, and absolute cross sections for the various processes were established. Energy and angular distributions of the reaction products were compared with available theoretical predictions and other experiments. A few cases of meson production were noted. (auth)

The Evolution of Educational Philosophy Underlying the Modern Program of Industrial Arts with Particular Emphasis upon the Contributions of John Locke

This thesis is a study of the evolution of educational philosophy underlying the modern program of industrial arts with particular emphasis upon the contributions of John Locke. The problem is limited to the study of the philosophy and theories of Locke with a brief coverage of Greek, [mediaeval], and modern periods of philosophy. It is impossible to cover in detail all the works of the three historical periods. Only the important general aspects which have a direct bearing on Locke and his influence upon industrial arts are discussed in detail in this study.
