Property evaluation of plutonium sheet used in capacitor discharge studies (open access)

Property evaluation of plutonium sheet used in capacitor discharge studies

At the request of Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, four plutonium strips 0.050 inches thick, 0-50 inches in width and 6 inches in length have been examined by metallographic, chemical, X-ray, density and dilatometric methods. The data obtained will help calibrate high energy electrical discharge equipment used to rapidly heat plutonium.

Catalytic Hydrocracking of High Boiler in Nuclear Reactor Coolant (open access)

Catalytic Hydrocracking of High Boiler in Nuclear Reactor Coolant

Selective hydrocracking of total coolant was found to be an efficient and economic method for reconstitution of high boiler in the coolant to usable product. Such a process could eliminate the expense of vacuum distillation and disposal of high boilers produced in a nuclear reactor power plant. The selective conversion was possible since polyphenyls were found to be more susceptible towards hydrocracking as the phenyl chain length increased. Both cobalt molybdate on alumina and nickel oxide on alumina (50 to 80 square meters per gram) were found to be efficient catalysts at conditions of 900 deg F and 1000 psig with the latter giving more selective conversion to terphenyls. Continuous flow hydrocracking tests on OMRE Core II cool ant (containing 23% high boiler) resulted in 90 to 100% conversion of high boiler at product recoveries of 85 to 95 wt%. Average molecular weights of the products (biphenyl and heavier) were in the range 205 to 225 compared to 270 for Core II coolant. High boiler in Core III-A coolant which contained mainly first-generation polymers (hexaphenyls) was slightly more refractory toward hydrocracking than Core II high boiler, and conversion decreased slightly with increasing on-stream time. However, at optimum condition for processing …

Vibration and Shock, Highway Transport Between Santa Susana Mountains and Edwards Air Force Base (open access)

Vibration and Shock, Highway Transport Between Santa Susana Mountains and Edwards Air Force Base

A road test, performed on a SNAP 10A mass mockup system, indicated that shock and vibration inputs under actual conditions were not excessive. During the course of travel from the Santa Susana field laboratory to Edwards Air Force Base, and during field trials at Santa Susana, the test system was subjected to only two accelerations exceeding 2 g, and no inputs exceeded 2.4 g. It was concluded that shock and vibration to SNAP systems from highway transporation can be adequately controlled by: selecting the appropriate vehicie, providing proper packaging; specifying route and speed limits for various driving conditions; using ordinary care in loading and unloading; and including suitable shock monitoring instruments with the shipment, (P.C.H.)

Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons From Nitrogen and Oxygen (open access)

Scattering of 14-Mev Neutrons From Nitrogen and Oxygen

The differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 14-Mev neutrons from nitrogen and oxygen were measured in the angular range from 17 to 140 deg , using liquid targets and annular ring geometry. Inelastic scattering to the 2.31 and 3.95-Mev levels in N/sup 14/ and to the levels near 6 and 7 Mev in O/sup 16/ was investigated over a more restricted angular range. The 2.31-Mev level in N/sup 14/ was not excited appreciably, in disagreement with previously reported results. For both elements, the elastic scattering cross sections (determined to an accuracy of 10%) were found to be appreciably higher than the optical model predictions by Rjorklund and Fernbach for scatterirg angles larger than 70 deg . The inelastic cross sections measured are, within experimental accuracy, the same as the corresponding (p,p') cross sections. (auth)

Mutual Charge Neutralization of Gaseous Ions (open access)

Mutual Charge Neutralization of Gaseous Ions

The problem of the bimolecular rate constant, alpha , for the mutual charge neutralization reaction (ion-ion recombination) for ions formed by the vacuum ultraviolet photolysis of nitric oxide is considered. The pressure dependence of alpha over a pressure range of 10 to 600 torr for mixtures of a few hundred microns of NO with He, Ar, Kr, Xe, H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and N/sub 2/ was measured. From the low-pressure limit of alpha , the rate constant for charge neutralization in the absence of a third body was found to be k/sub o/ = 2.1 plus or minus 0.4 x 10/sup -7/ cm/sup 3// sec. The high-pressure limit of alpha was estimated to be 2.0 plus or minus 0.5 x 10/sup -6/ cm/sup 3//sec. The third-body efficiencies for promoting the charge-neutralization reaction were measured. The results, relative to He as the third-body gas, are H/sub 2/= 1.4 plus or minus 0.4, D/sub 2/= 1.5 plus or minus 0.4, Ar =3.6 plus or minus 0.8, Kr =4.3 plus or min11.0, N/sub 2/ = 5.2 plus or minus 1.1, and Xe = 6.8 plus or minus 1.5. The average ionic mobility in the gas mixtures is estimated, and the mobilities indicate that …

Stress-Dependent Interactions Between Cesium and Other Materials. Summary Report, February 15, 1962-February 15, 1963 (open access)

Stress-Dependent Interactions Between Cesium and Other Materials. Summary Report, February 15, 1962-February 15, 1963

Metals and alloys germane to thermionic energy converter usage were screened for embrittlement by liquid cesium. Techniques are described for more detailed studies of ceramics and susceptible metals. Definite reductions in tensile ductility were observed for 302 stainless steel and molybdenum. Bend ductility was lowered in titanium, titanium-8 aluminum-4 vanadium alloy, niobium, tantalum, and silver-- copper eutectic solder. Some difficulty in reproducibly wetting samples was evident. Slightly contaminating the cesium with oxygen (or water) was observed to increase cesium wettability. (auth)
