National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Durango Quadrangle, Colorado

From purpose and study: The Durango Quadrangle, southwest Colorado (Fig. 1), was evaluated to identify geologic units and to delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for uranium deposits. Geologic environments were evaluated to a depth of 1500 m based on recognition criteria (Mickle and Mathews, eds., 1978) prepared for the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program. A favorable environment, as defined for this program, is an environment that could contain at least 100 tons U308 in deposits with an average grade no less than 100 ppm U308 . Environments that did not meet the NURE criteria were categorized as unfavorable. Some of the subsurface and several areas of restricted access were categorized as unevaluated because insufficient data exist for proper evaluation.

Rehabilitation Potential and Practices of Colorado Oil Shale Lands. Progress Report, June 1, 1978--May 31, 1979 (open access)

Rehabilitation Potential and Practices of Colorado Oil Shale Lands. Progress Report, June 1, 1978--May 31, 1979

The following document is a third-year progress report for the period June 1, 1978 to May 31, 1979. The overall objective of the project is to study the effects of seeding techniques, species mixtures, fertilizer, ecotypes, improved plant materials, mycorrhizal fungi, and soil microorganisms on the initial and final stages of reclamation obtained through seeding and subsequent succession on disturbed oil shale lands. Plant growth medias that are being used in field-established test plots include retorted shale, soil over retorted shale, subsoil materials, and surface disturbed topsoils. Because of the long-term nature of successional and ecologically oriented studies the project is just beginning to generate significant publications. Several of the studies associated with the project have some phases being conducted principally in the laboratories and greenhouses at Colorado State Univerisity. The majority of the research, however, is being conducted on a 20 hectare Intensive Study Site located near the focal points of oil shale activity in the Piceance Basin. The site is at an elevation of 2,042 m, receives approximately 30 to 55 cm of precipitation annually, and encompasses the plant communities most typical of the Piceance Basin. Most of the information contained in this report originated from the monitoring …

Geology of Carnotite-Bearing Sandstone in the Uravan and Gateway Districts, Montrose and Mesa Counties, Colorado, and Grand County, Utah (open access)

Geology of Carnotite-Bearing Sandstone in the Uravan and Gateway Districts, Montrose and Mesa Counties, Colorado, and Grand County, Utah

From Introduction: "In the Uravan and Gateway districts, the general character of the bedding in the ore-bearing sandstone and amount of alteration in associated mudstones, and the relation of these to each other, are the features most useful as large-scale guides. This report describes these features and their distribution, as well as some other significant geologic characteristics of the ore-bearing sandstone."

Milk Production and Distribution in Nine Western States in the 1950s (open access)

Milk Production and Distribution in Nine Western States in the 1950s

This report provides information on milk distribution and dairy cattle feeding practices in Nevada, Utah and portions of seven other adjacent states during the 1950s. The information was gathered to support the US Department of Energy's ''Offsite Radiation Exposure Review Project (ORERP).'' This project is charged with providing radiation dose estimates for residents of Nevada, Utah, and surrounding states from nuclear weapons testing conducted at the Nevada Test Site from 1951 through 1962. The information on milk production and distribution is essential for assessment of the internal organ doses received by people as a result of ingesting radioactive fallout-contaminated foods. The information is used as input data for Colorado State University's PATHWAY computer code which estimates the ingestion of twenty radionuclides by people relative to a given level of fallout deposition.

Analyses of Coals in the United States with Descriptions of Mine and Field Samples Collected between July 1, 1904 and June 30, 1910 Part 2. Descriptions of Samples

From Introduction: "This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analyses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the persons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have furnished by the collection themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness detail."

Thorium and rare earth minerals in the Powderhorn district, Gunnison County, Colorado (open access)

Thorium and rare earth minerals in the Powderhorn district, Gunnison County, Colorado

"Thorium deposits were discovered in the Powderhorn district in 1949. This district has long been known for its occurrences of alkalic igneous rocks, of which the best known is the Iron Hill complex (Larsen, 1942). Some of these alkalic rocks contain titanium, barium, strontium, rare earths, thorium, and niobium in greater percentages than those of most igneous rocks. A study of the thorium deposits was undertaken to obtain more information on the geologic relation of minor elements, particularly rare earths, and thorium, to alkalic igneous rocks, and to evaluate the economic significance of the Thorium deposits."

Rock-Strata Gases of the Cripple Creek District, Colorado and Their Effect on Mining

From Introduction: "The presence in the Cripple Creek district, Colo., of irrespirable gas or gases, generally known to consist mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, has been recognized by members of the mining industry in that region almost since underground mining was begun there; the occurrence origin, and possible control of these gases have been discussed in several articles cited at various places in this report. Similar gases have also been studied in other metal-mining districts, as later discussed."
