Welding Rustproof Steels (open access)

Welding Rustproof Steels

The following experimental results will perhaps increase the knowledge of the process of welding rustproof steels. The experiments were made with two chrome-steel sheets and with two chrome-steel-nickel sheets having the composition shown in Table I.

Foaming of Aircraft-Engine Oils as a Problem in Colloid Chemistry - 1 (open access)

Foaming of Aircraft-Engine Oils as a Problem in Colloid Chemistry - 1

Report presenting an investigation conducted on the foaming characteristics of representative aircraft-engine lubricants in order to arrive at an adequate theory of the foaming of such oils. Methods of measuring foaming are compared and analyzed for their significant factors.

Technical report of the 1928 Rhon soaring-flight contest

Report presenting some information on the gliders that participated in the 1928 Rhön soaring flight contest. Almost all of the gliders represented an improvement over gliders used in the previous years. A great increase in the skill of the glider pilots is also noted.

Foaming Volume and Foam Stability (open access)

Foaming Volume and Foam Stability

"A method of measuring foaming volume is described and investigated to establish the critical factors in its operation. Data on foaming volumes and foam stabilities are given for a series of hydrocarbons and for a range of concentrations of aqueous ethylene-glycol solutions. It is shown that the amount of foam formed depends on the machinery of its production as well as on properties of the liquid, whereas the stability of the foam produced, within specified mechanical limitations, is primarily a function of the liquid" (p. 1).

Rocket Power Plants Based on Nitric Acid and their Specific Propulsive Weights (open access)

Rocket Power Plants Based on Nitric Acid and their Specific Propulsive Weights

"Two fields are reserved for the application of rocket power plants. The first field is determined by the fact that the rocket power plant is the only type of power plant that can produce thrust without dependence upon environment. The second field is that in which the rocket power plant proves itself the most suitable as a high-power drive in free competition with other types of power plants" (p. 1).

The Strength of Shell Bodies: Theory and Practice (open access)

The Strength of Shell Bodies: Theory and Practice

"The monocoque form of airplane construction has introduced a number of new problems to the stress calculator and the designer. The problems for the stress calculator fall into two groups: the determination of the stress condition (shell statics) and the determination of the failing strength (shell strength). The present report summarizes the most important theoretical and experimental results on this subject" (p. 1).

Laws of Flow in Rough Pipes (open access)

Laws of Flow in Rough Pipes

An experimental investigation is made of the turbulent flow of water in pipes with various degrees of relative roughness. The pipes range in size from 25 to 100 millimeters in diameter and from 1800 to 7050 millimeters in length. Flow velocities permitted Reynolds numbers from about 10 (sup. 4) to 10 (sup. 6). The laws of resistance and velocity distributions were obtained as a function of relative roughness and Reynolds number. Mixing length, as described by Prandtl's mixing-length formula, is discussed in relation to the experimental results.
