The initial scientific program at the NSLS infrared beamline (open access)

The initial scientific program at the NSLS infrared beamline

Unique extraction optics (90 {times} 90 mrads) at the NSLS U4IR line offer high brightness beams at up to mm wavelengths with a {approximately}1ns pulse structure. Radiation from this port has now been carefully characterized and agrees well with calculations, making it 100--1000 times brighter than conventional sources in the middle and far infrared regions. Using rapid scan Michelson interferometers with liquid He cooled bolometer detectors we have been able for the first time to measure molecule substrate vibrations in surface science. We have also made the first measurements of the transmission of a film of the high Tc material YBaCuO in the BCS gap region. These initial experiments have demonstrated the advantages of the superior signal to noise available from this infrared beamline. 19 refs., 6 figs.

Higher Education in Haiti, 1958-1988: an Analysis of its Organization, Administration and Contributions to National Development (open access)

Higher Education in Haiti, 1958-1988: an Analysis of its Organization, Administration and Contributions to National Development

The problem of this study was the status of higher education in Haiti. The purposes were to analyze the organization, administration, and contributions of higher education to national development from 1958 to 1988 and to provide background information from foreign literature which might assist in the improvement Haiti's system of higher education. In an effort to locate information necessary to achieve these purposes, a computer search was conducted. A survey of available literature in French, Creole, and English and personal and telephone interviews were also conducted. The results of this study reveal that, in the past three decades, higher education in Haiti has merely functioned as a symbol of social prestige. Haiti's system of higher education exhibits no apparent direction, purpose, of long-term goals. With more than 90 percent of its professors part-time and ill-prepared, its curriculum unrelated to the needs of Haitian society, and its student body in revolt for the past three years, higher education in Haiti is urgently in need of radical reform. Any contribution made to national development by the system of higher education is weak at best. The small but oppressive elite group that dominates the economic and political realms in Haiti has proved to …

Cross sections and analyzing powers of sup 15 N(p,n) sup 15 O at 200 MeV and 494 MeV (open access)

Cross sections and analyzing powers of sup 15 N(p,n) sup 15 O at 200 MeV and 494 MeV

Differential cross sections and analyzing powers have been measured for the {sup 15}N(p,n){sup 15} O(g.s.) reaction at bombarding energies of 200 MeV and 494 MeV. The 494 MeV data were obtained at the LAMPF Neutron Time-Of-Flight Facility on an 82 m flight path with a resolution of about 2.7 MeV. The 200 MeV data were obtained at IUCF on a 76m flight path with a resolution of about 1.1 MeV. At both energies, the measured analyzing power is small, the magnitude is less than .2 for momentum transfers of less than 1 fm{sup {minus}1}. In contrast, both Relativistic and standard DWIA calculations predict a maximum of A={minus}.7 near q=0.7 fm{sup {minus}1}. 53 refs., 44 figs.

Experimental Tests of Proton Spin Models (open access)

Experimental Tests of Proton Spin Models

We have developed models for the spin-weighted quark and gluon distribution in a longitudinally polarized proton. The model parameters are determined from current algebra sum rules and polarized deep-inelastic scattering data. A number of different scenarios are presented for the fraction of spin carried the constituent parton distributions. A possible long-range experimental program is suggested for measuring various hard scattering processes using polarized lepton and proton beams. With the knowledge gained from these experiments, we can begin to understand the parton contributions to the proton spin. 28 refs., 5 figs.

Heavy Ion Fusion Accelerator Research (HIFAR) half-year report, October 1, 1988--March 31, 1989 (open access)

Heavy Ion Fusion Accelerator Research (HIFAR) half-year report, October 1, 1988--March 31, 1989

The basic objective of the Heavy Ion Fusion Accelerator Research (HIFAR) program is to assess the suitability of heavy ion accelerators as igniters for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). A specific accelerator technology, the induction linac, has been studied at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and has reached the point at which its viability for ICF applications can be assessed over the next few years. The HIFAR program addresses the generation of high-power, high-brightness beams of heavy ions, the understanding of the scaling laws in this novel physics regime, and the validation of new accelerator strategies, to cut costs. Key elements to be addressed include: beam quality limits set by transverse and longitudinal beam physics; development of induction accelerating modules, and multiple-beam hardware, at affordable costs; acceleration of multiple beams with current amplification --both new features in a linac -- without significant dilution of the optical quality of the beams; and final bunching, transport, and accurate focusing on a small target.

Characterization of the Outer Membrane of Treponema Pallidum Subsp. Pallidum by Binding Studies Using Antibodies, Complement, and Host Serum Proteins (open access)

Characterization of the Outer Membrane of Treponema Pallidum Subsp. Pallidum by Binding Studies Using Antibodies, Complement, and Host Serum Proteins

The major goal of this study was to achieve sustained cultivation of virulent T. pallidum in vitro. The putatuive binding of host proteins to the outer membrane (OM) of intact, virulent T. pallidum subsp. pallidum has been investigated. A major breakthrough was the development of a filtration assay, usinglow protein-binding membrane filters, for the measurement of substances bound to or incorporated into th eOM of T. pallidum. This avoided the conventional manipulations which can damage the fragile OM of T. pallidum. Using this filtration assay, studies on the binding of host serum proteins demonstrated that intact treponemes did not bind host proteins as previously reported. It also indicated that previous studies were probably performed with damaged by this research. The studies on the binding of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to intact and detergent treated treponemes provided evidence of the low level binding of antibody to intact treponemes which was greatly enhanced but the removal of the outer membrane with 0.1% Triton X. This research research corroborated that of others which suggests that the outer membrane of T. pallidum contains very little protein or surface exposed antigen.

Reduction Pathways in Cyclopentadienyl Rhenium Dicarbonyl Dibromide Deriviatives and Indenyl Rhenium Tricarbonyl: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Anionic Cyclopentadienyl Rhenium Complexes. Ring Attack vs. Metal-Halogen Exchange (open access)

Reduction Pathways in Cyclopentadienyl Rhenium Dicarbonyl Dibromide Deriviatives and Indenyl Rhenium Tricarbonyl: Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Anionic Cyclopentadienyl Rhenium Complexes. Ring Attack vs. Metal-Halogen Exchange

The reactions of diagonal and lateral Cp'Re(CO)2Br2 (where Cp' = n5-C5H5, n5-C5Me5) and (n5-CgH7)Re(CO)3 with reducing agents have been examined. Hydride reduction at -78 °C is observed to occur at the Cp ring in both CpRe(CO)2Br2 isomers, affording a thermally unstable [(n4 -C5Hg)Re(CO)2Br2]- complex. The product of hydride ring attack has been characterized by low-temperature IR and 1H NMR measurements in addition to 13C NOE and heteronuclear 2D NMR measurements. Reaction of lateral CpRe(CO)2Br2 with either MeLi or PhLi affords both Cp-ring attack and metalhalogen exchange, [CpRe(CO)2Br]- (1) while t-BuLi reacts exclusively via metal-halogen exchange. diag-CpRe(CO)2Br2 reacts with the above lithium reagents to yield the same metal-halogen exchange anion. Analogous reactions using diag- and lat-Cp*Re(CO)2Br2 (where Cp* = n5-CgMe5) afford only the corresponding rhenium metal-halogen exchange anion, [Cp*Re(CO)2Br] (2). The molecular structures of 1-[Li/15-Crown-5] and 2-PPP were established by X-ray crystallography. 1-[Li/15-Crown-5] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 with a = 10.860(4) A, b = 13.116(5) A, c = 7.417(3) A, B = 105.26(3)0, V = 1018.7(3) A3 , and Z = 2. 2-PPP crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with a = 20.646(5) A, b = 17.690(5) A, c = 17.553(3) A, and z = 8. Syntheses and the Structures of Polymethylpolycyclic and Polycyclic "Cage" Molecules (open access)

Syntheses and the Structures of Polymethylpolycyclic and Polycyclic "Cage" Molecules

The structures of Diels-Alder cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene to 2,6-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone and methylcyclopentadiene to 2,6-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone were assigned by analysis of 1-D and 2-D proton and carbon-13 NMR spectra. The structures of the cycloadduct of methylcyclopentadiene to 2,6-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone and that of the corresponding intramolecular [2+2] photocyclization product were also obtained by single crystal X-ray structural analysis. As the second part of the study, a new polycyclic "cage" molecule, a substituted trishomocubane isomer, was synthesized. In this synthesis, reductive bond cleavage followed by Dieckmann condensation was employed. Wolff-Kishner reduction then was used to convert a β-keto ester "cage" molecule to the corresponding carboxylic acid. A compound that possesses twofold symmetry was isolated from reaction product mixture. The structure of this compound has been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography.

Magnetic phase diagrams of UCu sub 2 Si sub 2 and UNi sub 2 Si sub 2 (open access)

Magnetic phase diagrams of UCu sub 2 Si sub 2 and UNi sub 2 Si sub 2

Magnetization measurements performed on UCu{sub 2}Si{sub 2} and UNi{sub 2}Si{sub 2} are reported. The compound UCu{sub 2}Si{sub 2} appears to undergo both an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at T = 107 K and a ferromagnetic (FM) transition at {Tc} {approx} 103 K. While the second transition at {Tc} has already been reported, the AFM phase was apparently overlooked in earlier studies. The compound UNi{sub 2}Si{sub 2} undergoes a transition at T {approx} 97 K, which was previously shown to be AFM by neutron scattering; we present evidence for the occurrence of a FM state below the AFM transition. 11 refs., 3 figs.

Investigations of hydrogen/Li sub 2 O surface interactions via quantum chemical cluster methods (open access)

Investigations of hydrogen/Li sub 2 O surface interactions via quantum chemical cluster methods

Both in-reactor and laboratory experiments on ceramic breeder materials have indicated that substantial enhancement of tritium release rate results when small amounts of H{sub 2} ({approximately}0.1%) are added to the He purge gas stream. Although a comprehensive understanding of this empirical fact is still lacking, it is expected that surface processes would play a major role in the release process. Despite its significant improvement in tritium release in ceramic breeders, the interaction of hydrogen with lithium containing oxide ceramic surfaces is still poorly understood. If previous experience from non-metallic catalysts can serve as a useful guide, the problem is likely to be non-trivial. At issue here is a sound physical-chemical description of the role played by hydrogen in enhancing tritium release. Only from such an understanding can one construct realistic models for the tritium release/inventory phenomena which have the reliability and predictive capability that are necessary for fusion reactor design in general and blanket design in particular. 17 refs., 3 figs.
