Der winzige Struwwelpeter

Essay and history of the folk character Struwwelpeter, translated variously as "Slovely Peter," "Shock-headed Peter," Boy with shock of unkempt bristly hair" etc. This character was well known to Mark Twain, and would have been an influence for his character Huckleberry Finn.

Positron-annihilation study of the equilibrium vacancy ensemble in aluminum (open access)

Positron-annihilation study of the equilibrium vacancy ensemble in aluminum

A preliminary report is presented of a positron-annihilation study of the equilibrium vacancy ensemble in aluminum using one- and two-dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) measurements versus temperature. The annihilation characteristics of a positron from the Bloch state, and the monovancy- and divacancy-trapped states have been calculated self-consistently within a supercell, including many-body enhancement effects, and are compared with experiment. 4 figures.

Positron-annihilation spectroscopy of vacancy defects in aluminum (open access)

Positron-annihilation spectroscopy of vacancy defects in aluminum

Positron-annihilation characteristics in a monovacancy and a divacancy in aluminium have been calculated self-consistently using a local density functional formalism, into which the many-body enhancement effects have been incorporated. Results for the theoretical two-dimensional angular correlation of annihilation radiation spectra are compared to experimental results obtained from an aluminum single crystal at 20/sup 0/C, where positrons annihilate from a Bloch-state, and at higher temperatures, 500/sup 0/C and 630/sup 0/C, where they annihilate primarily from vacancy-trapped states.

Overview of cooperative international piping benchmark analyses (open access)

Overview of cooperative international piping benchmark analyses

This paper presents an overview of an effort initiated in 1976 by the International Working Group on Fast Reactors (IWGFR) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to evaluate detailed and simplified inelastic analysis methods for piping systems with particular emphasis on piping bends. The procedure was to collect from participating member IAEA countries descriptions of tests and test results for piping systems or bends (with emphasis on high temperature inelastic tests), to compile, evaluate, and issue a selected number of these problems for analysis, and to compile and make a preliminary evaluation of the analyses results. Of the problem descriptions submitted three were selected to be used: a 90/sup 0/-elbow at 600/sup 0/C with an in-plane transverse force; a 90/sup 0/-elbow with an in-plane moment; and a 180/sup 0/-elbow at room temperature with a reversed, cyclic, in-plane transverse force. A variety of both detailed and simplified analysis solutions were obtained. A brief comparative assessment of the analyses is contained in this paper. 15 figures.

LAMPF nucleon-nucleon facilities: 1981 (open access)

LAMPF nucleon-nucleon facilities: 1981

An overview of LAMPF nucleon-nucleon experimental facilities is presented. Particular emphasis is given to simultaneous operation in the three beamlines served by the negative ion beam. Capabilities are described for matching beam parameters, including the beam polarization axis, to experimenters' requirements. Some comments on facility usage are included.

Synthesis and Reactions of Some N-Nitrosamines (open access)

Synthesis and Reactions of Some N-Nitrosamines

Nucleophiles react with the α-acetoxy derivative of α-hydroxybenzylbenzylnitrosamine at the carbonyl carbon of the acetoxy moiety followed by fragmentation to the very same intermediates formed by oxidative metabolism. Since α-acetoxybenzylbenzylnitrosamine has been shown to be able to acylate nucleophiles and since the nucleic acids are nucleophiles, then it is possible that this compound may cause mutations by an acylation pathway instead of or in addition to the more common alkylation pathway. The data in Part I of this dissertation should be considered in any further biological investigations of N,N-dialkylnitrosamine induced mutagenesis or carcinogenesis. The study of the synthesis, reactions, mutagenicity, and the possible correlation to compound liposolubility of cyclic N-nitrosamines was also investigated.

Experimental Determination of the Effective Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction for P-Nucleus Reactions at Intermediate Energies (open access)

Experimental Determination of the Effective Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction for P-Nucleus Reactions at Intermediate Energies

A complete measurement of the polarization transfer observables has been made for the first time in the (p,p') reaction at intermediate energies. Measurements are reported for the /sup 12/C(p,p') /sup 12/C reaction to the 1/sup +/, T = 0(12.71 MeV) and 1/sup +/, T = 1(15.11 MeV) states at 500 MeV at laboratory scattering angles of 3.5/sup 0/, 5.5/sup 0/, 7.5/sup 0/, and 12.0/sup 0/. Linear combinations of these observables are shown to exhibit a very selective dependence on the isoscalar and isovector spin-dependent components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. To the extent of the validity of the single collision approximation, these amplitudes are compared directly to the free nucleon-nucleon amplitudes at small momentum transfers ( < 1 fm/sup -1/).
