Species Profiles: Life Histories and Environmental Requirements of Coastal Vertebrates and Invertebrates Pacific Ocean Region, Report 1, Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas

Abstract: Species profiles are literature summaries of the taxonomy, morphology, distribution, life history, and environmental requirements of aquatic species. They are designed to assist in environmental impact assessments. The green turtle, Chelonia mydas, is found throughout the Pacific Ocean region. Its status is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and as threatened in the U.S. Endangered Species Act and is included in Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Females nest on a 20,3-, or >4-year cycle, laying one to six clutches per season and averaging between 100 and 110 eggs per clutch. Nesting normally takes place in the summer months. Hatching mortality from predation in the marine environment is thought to be high. After an initial >3-year carnivorous pelagic stage, green turtles become primarily herbivores, residing in shallow coastal areas where they feed on sea grass and/or algae. Growth rates appear to vary with diets and are generally slow. Turtles average 25 years to reach sexual maturity in Hawaii. Adult green turtles are long-lived and have few predators other than man. The use of modern equipment in hunting turtles and the disregard …

Developing a Predation Index and Evaluating Ways to Reduce Salmonid Losses to Predation in the Columbia River Basin, Annual Progress Report August 1988-September 1989. (open access)

Developing a Predation Index and Evaluating Ways to Reduce Salmonid Losses to Predation in the Columbia River Basin, Annual Progress Report August 1988-September 1989.

We are reporting progress on the predator-prey study for the period August 28, 1988 to September 1, 1989. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of an index for assessment of predation in various reservoirs throughout the Columbia River basin, to describe the relationships among predator-caused mortality of smolts and physical and biological variables; to examine the feasibility of developing bounty, commercial or recreational fisheries on northern squawfish (Ptychocheilus oregonesis); and to develop a plan to evaluate the efficacy of predator control fisheries. Literature searches on predator abundance indexing and factors regulating fish population dynamics have been conducted; selected references have been summarized, and compiled in a key-word bibliography format. The feasibility of various types of predator abundance indices is being assessed; existing data relevant to mark-recapture, catch per unit effort (CPUE), physical and chemical variables, and reservoir morphology have been compiled, reviewed, and summarized. In cases where sufficient data exist, preliminary implementation of predator abundance indices has been demonstrated. Field sampling in John Day Reservoir was conducted during May to August, 1989 -- to continue time series data bases on northern squawfish CPUE and growth, and to evaluate the possibility of year class strength determinations of …

Self-Directed Learning Projects of Older Adults (open access)

Self-Directed Learning Projects of Older Adults

This study determined the number of self-directed learning projects undertaken by older adults and examined the motivational factors and anticipated benefits related to the learning activities. In addition, obstacles to conducting self-directed learning were identified by the respondents. A list of 20,032 names of adults, aged 50 or more years and residing in Tom Green County, Texas, was obtained from voter registration rolls and the residential rolls of four retirement complexes. Four hundred names were randomly selected to serve as the sample of the study. Of the 400 potential subjects, 120 persons agreed to be interviewed. Indepth interviews were conducted using the questions from Tough's Interview Schedule for Studying Some Basic Characteristics of Learning Projects and a probe sheet to identify obstacles to conducting self-directed learning projects. The interviews focused on the learning activities of older adults during the previous year. The 120 subjects of this study conducted a total of 239 learning projects in the previous year, an average of 1.99 self-directed learning projects per person. Ninety-five (95%) percent of the persons interviewed reported to have conducted at least one learning project in the past year. The majority of the learning projects were self-planned for the purpose of self-enjoyment …

Catching Our Breath: Next Steps for Reducing Urban Ozone

This report on urban ozone was requested by the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and its Subcommittee on Health and the Environment in anticipation of the upcoming reauthorization of the Clean Air Act. Of the air pollutants that the Act covers, ozone has been the most difficult to bring under control; it may well be the most expensive.

Mineral Resources of the Medicine Lodge, Alkali Creek, and Trapper Creek Wilderness Study Areas, Big Horn County, Wyoming (open access)

Mineral Resources of the Medicine Lodge, Alkali Creek, and Trapper Creek Wilderness Study Areas, Big Horn County, Wyoming

From introduction: This report presents an evaluation of the mineral endowment (identified resources and mineral resource potential) of the study area and is the product of several separate studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Identified resources are classified according to a modification of the system described by McKelvey (1972) and the USBM and USGS (1980), which is shown in the Appendix. Identified resources are studied by the USBM. Mineral resource potential is the likelihood of occurrence of undiscovered metals and nonmetals, industrial rocks and minerals, and of undiscovered energy sources (coal, oil, gas, oil shale, tar, and geothermal sources). It is classified according to the system of Goudarzi (1984) and is shown in the Appendix. Undiscovered resources are studied by the USGS.

Geologic History and Hydrocarbon Potential of Late Cretaceous-Age, Low-Permeability Reservoirs, Piceance Basin, Western Colorado

From abstract: The Piceance basin of western Colorado contains large reserves of natural gas in low-permeability reservoirs of the Late Cretaceous-age Mesaverde Formation or Mesaverde Group. The gas accumulation can be divided into three general zones: a zone of surface-water invasion that extends inward a few miles from present outcrops, a gas-and-waterbearing zone that extends 10-20 miles inward from the water-bearing zone, and a central, predominantly gasbearing zone.

Mineral Resources of the Indian Creek, Bridger Jack Mesa, and Butler Wash Wilderness Study Areas, San Juan County, Utah

From abstract: The Indian Creek (UT-060-164), Bridger Jack Mesa (UT-060-167), and Butler Wash (UT-060-169) Wilderness Study Areas are located in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. Inferred subeconomic resources of sandstone and sand and gravel exist within all three wilderness study areas, but because of their abundance throughout the region, their distance from current markets, and their lack of unique properties, these materials have no current likelihood for development.
