Aerial Radiometric and Magnetic Survey of the Lubbock and Plainview Geologic Atlas Areas of Texas: Volume 1. Summary Report

From introduction: Geodata International, Incorporated, conducted an airborne gamma ray and total magnetic field survey of a region of Northwest Texas which covered the Lubbock and Plainview Geologic Atlas Maps. The area shown on Figure 1 was surveyed from an aircraft using large-volume radiation detectors with computer-controlled airborne equipment. Each map line was flown in an east-west direction with an average length of 120 miles. A total of 47 map lines were surveyed spaced at 3-mile intervals beginning at latitude 33000' and ending at latitude 350

Primary Productivity and Community Metabolism in a Small North Central Texas Pond Ecosystem (open access)

Primary Productivity and Community Metabolism in a Small North Central Texas Pond Ecosystem

Rates of primary production and community metabolism were monitored over a one year period using the diurnal oxygen method. Certain physico-chemical parameters were also measured, and autotrophic standing crops were estimated. An in-depth study was made of the phytoplankton community and various diversity indicies were calculated. Simple correlations were run between all parameters measured (biotic and abiotic), and their inter-relationships examined. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to develop equations predictive of production and community metabolism. Bluegreen algae were the dominant phytoplankters with blooms occurring in late summer and fall. Yearly mean production was approximately 21 kcal per meter square per day with a mean photosynthetic efficiency of 1.2 per cent. Of the various parameters measured turbidity and water temperature were most important in determining rates of primary production.

Technical Proposal Salton Sea Geothermal Power Pilot Plant Program (open access)

Technical Proposal Salton Sea Geothermal Power Pilot Plant Program

The proposed Salton Sea Geothermal Power Pilot Plant Program comprises two phases. The objective of Phase 1 is to develop the technology for power generation from high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal brines existing in the Salton Sea known geothermal resources area. Phase 1 work will result in the following: (a) Completion of a preliminary design and cost estimate for a pilot geothermal brine utilization facility. (b) Design and construction of an Area Resource Test Facility (ARTF) in which developmental geothermal utilization concepts can be tested and evaluated. Program efforts will be divided into four sub-programs; Power Generation, Mineral Extraction, Reservoir Production, and the Area Resources Test Facility. The Power Generation Subprogram will include testing of scale and corrosion control methods, and critical power cycle components; power cycle selection based on an optimization of technical, environmental and economic analyses of candidate cycles; preliminary design of a pilot geothermal-electric generating station to be constructed in Phase 2 of this program. The Mineral Extraction Subprogram will involve the following: selection of an optimum mineral recovery process; recommendation of a brine clean-up process for well injection enhancement; engineering, construction and operation of mineral recovery and brine clean-up facilities; analysis of facility operating results from environmental, economical …

Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Accelerator Division Annual Report: 1972-1974 (open access)

Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Accelerator Division Annual Report: 1972-1974

The Accelerator Division was formed as a separate division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in 1973. Originally called Physics II Division, it acquired its present title when Andrew M. Sessler was designated Director of the Laboratory in November 1973. Under the leadership of Associate Director Edward J. Lofgren the major activities of the Division comprise operation of the Bevalac, for high-energy and heavy-ion physics, and Advanced Accelerator Research and Development. In addition, there is a small amount of research activity with heavy ions by some members of the Division. Heavy ions were first accelerated in the Bevatron in 1971. In the period under review here a large effort was devoted to construction of the Bevalac project, in which the SuperHILAC is used as a source of energetic heavy ions that are transported down the intervening hillside by a focusing transfer line, and injected into the Bevatron for final acceleration to an energy of 2.6 GeV/nucleon. This facility is unique in the world as a source of relativistic heavy ions and has opened up a new and rich field of research that has commanded worldwide interest. Joint studies with the staff of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center on a positron-electron colliding …

Reactor Safety Study: An Assessment of Accident Risks in U.S. Commercial Nuclear Power Plants, Appendices 3 and 4 (open access)

Reactor Safety Study: An Assessment of Accident Risks in U.S. Commercial Nuclear Power Plants, Appendices 3 and 4

From section 1: In the quantitative system probability estimates performed in this study, component behavior data in the form of failure rates and repair times are required as inputs to the system models. Since the goal of this study is risk assessment, as opposed to reliability analysis, larger errors (e.g. order of magnitude type accuracy) can be tolerated in the quantified results. This has important implications on the treatment of available data. In standard reliability analysis, point values (i.e., "best-estimates") are generally used for both data and results in quantifying the system model. In risk assessment, since results accurate to about an order of magnitude are sufficient, data and results using random variable and probabilistic approaches, can be usefully employed. The base of applicable failure rate data is thus significantly broadened since data with large error spreads and uncertainties can now be utilized. The data and associated material that were assembled for use in this study and that are presented here are to be used in the random variable framework (which will be described). The data and the accompanying framework are deemed sufficient for the study's needs. Care must be taken, however, since this data may not be sufficiently detailed, …
