The final technical report of the CRADA, 'Medical Accelerator Technology'

Under this CRADA, Berkeley Lab and the industry partner, General Atomics (GA), have cooperatively developed hadron therapy technologies for commercialization. Specifically, Berkeley Lab and GA jointly developed beam transport systems to bring the extracted protons from the accelerator to the treatment rooms, rotating gantries to aim the treatment beams precisely into patients from any angle, and patient positioners to align the patient accurately relative to the treatment beams. We have also jointly developed a patient treatment delivery system that controls the radiation doses in the patient, and hardware to improve the accelerator performances, including a radio-frequency ion source and its low-energy beam transport (LEBT) system. This project facilitated the commercialization of the DOE-developed technologies in hadron therapy by the private sector in order to improve the quality of life of the nation.

Report discussing the history of a public housing project located in the "Northside" area of Corpus Christi, "to document the 28 buildings of the D. N. Leathers I public housing campus as well as how those buildings fit into the historic context of public housing nationally and locally. The culture of D. N. Leathers I in the 1940s through the 1960s is also included through the perceptions of the persons who contributed their oral history to the project" (p. 2).

High Energy Physics

This grant covered an umbrella program of research in high-­‐energy particle physics at Southern Methodist University during the period 2004-­‐2013. The experimental program evolved during that time. At its early stages it included research on the CLEO experiment at CESR (Coan, Stroynowski, Ye), D0 experiment at Tevatron (Kehoe), preparation for the BTEV experiment at Fermilab (Coan) and construction and commissioning of the Liquid Argon Calorimeter for the ATLAS experiment at LHC (Stroynowski, Ye). In the last three years the program concentrated on the ATLAS experiment at LHC (Kehoe, Sekula, Stroynowski, Ye), D0 experiment at Tevatron (Kehoe) and NOvA experiment at Fermilab (Coan). Professor Sekula had a short-­‐term independent grant for which he is submitting a separate report. The theoretical physics program included work on non-­‐perturbative methods in the light cone representation (McCartor (deceased)), lattice calculations (Hornbostel), and determination of parton distribution functions (Olness). A summary of the accomplishments emphasizing results from the past three years is provided separately for each of the tasks.
