The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Harry Thweatt. Thweatt was born 14 July 1919 in Sandia, Texas. After high school, he started college where he was able to get a private pilot’s license in 1940. He continued with the program, getting a commercial pilot’s license in San Antonio in 1941. This enabled him to work as a civilian flight instructor for the Army. Thweatt’s first job with the Army was teaching pre-glider training in West Texas and New Mexico. He then went to instruct at the Army Primary Flying School at Curtis Field in Brady, Texas. After 14 months there, Thweatt, still a civilian, was made an Army Warrant Flight Officer. He was checked out in the Army’s pursuit planes and assigned to the 5th Ferrying Group at Love Field in Dallas. For 6 or 8 months he ferried aircraft from Dallas all over the world. In 1945, he was reassigned to Karachi, India, flying supplies in the China-Burma-India Theater. When the war in the Pacific ended, he returned to the US on a Liberty ship. He was discharged from the Army at Randolph Field in San Antonio.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Charles Smith. Smith joined the Army in May of 1944. He was placed in the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program. In the spring of 1945, he traveled to an infantry replacement center in Leyte, in the Philippines. He was assigned to the Americal Division on Cebu Island, the 164th Regiment, aboard a Landing Craft Infantry. He was trained to work on the radio. Smith’s regiment was preparing for the invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped and the war ended. They traveled to Japan in September of 1945 and served as occupation forces. He returned to the US and was discharged in late 1946.

Then he was assigned to another H & S company in the 19th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. He went overseas with them and helped build docks and roads on Guadalcanal and Bougainville. He also was at Guam for the invasion in July, 1944. Thomas received some leave and returned to the US in May, 1945. He was discharged later in September and surprised his mother upon his homecoming.

In December 1942, he joined the Navy and was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois for boot camp. He was then sent to Norfolk, Virginia and assigned to the USS Daniel T. Griffin (DE-54) to run the ship’s laundry. He recalls an encounter with a German submarine. After serving in the Atlantic for a period of time, the ship returned to the United States and Davis was assigned to the USS Westmorland (APA-104) as a Motor Machinist. After the ship arrived in Hawaii, he was offered the opportunity to be discharged. He returned to the US and was discharged September 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Ike Kampmann. Kampmann was born in San Antonio, Texas on 2 October 1918 and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin with a law degree. In the spring of 1945 when he was stationed at 6th Army Headquarters at Lingayen Gulf, Luzon Island, Philippines, he was attached to the Staff Officer for Personnel (G-1) as the Army was making its move toward Manila. The commanding general, Lieutenant General Walter Krueger, appointed him to a military commission defending four Japanese soldiers who had been caught behind Allied lines in civilian clothes. Kampmann was the least experienced of the six officers on the commission. The four were found guilty and hanged. Subsequently, he was appointed aide-de-camp to General Krueger. For the duration of the interview he expresses remorse over the trial’s outcome.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with George Theis. Theis joined the Army Air Forces in 1942 and was placed in the reserves. While waiting to be called, he joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP). He graduated from advanced glider flight training in Lubbock, Texas on 15 September 1944. Theis served as a glider pilot with the 98th Troop Carrier Squadron, 440th Troop Carrier Group. They were shipped to England, and participated in re-supply missions during Operation VARSITY in March of 1945. After the war ended, he served in occupied Germany. Theis returned to the US in June of 1946 and received his discharge.
