Soft Landing Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry: History, Instrumentation and an Ambient Pressure Application

Preparative mass spectrometry is an important method for the synthesis of new materials. Recently, soft landing mass spectrometry has been used to land ions on surfaces to coat or otherwise alter them. Commercial soft landing instruments do not yet exist, and the physical phenomenon of soft landing has not yet been fully described. For future ion mobility soft landing research, the theory of ion mobility, ion optics and soft landing is discussed, and 2 soft landing instruments have been built and described, along with proof of concept experiments for both instruments. Simulations of the process of ion mobility and ion optics for use in these instruments, as well as some preliminary results for the optics are included. Surfaces described include copper on mica and iron on silicon. Self assembly of soft landed ions is observed on the surfaces. The instruments constructed will be useful for future soft landing research, and soft landing can be used for future materials research with special attention focused on the self-assembly of the landed ions.

This study attempts to calculate the areas of the cross section and diameter of the CH3 group, COOH group, the length of the carbon chain, and the longtiudinal distance between carbon atoms for each of the three acids. It also attempts to develop a method of measuring the effective diameter of molecules of gases. Equations for these terms as given by MacDougall and experiments were performed and the data applied to the equation.

This study investigated mercury-sensitized photochemical action on a mixture of isobutane and isobutene. Flow runs of isobutane-isobutene 3.2.1 mercury-saturated gases illuminated with unfiltered radiation of mercury vapor lamp gave no detectable change to hydrocarbons heavier than C4 at reaction tempratures of 27C. and 99C.

Acenaphthene and 1,10-Phenanthroline-Fused Βeta-Functionalized Porphyrins

A series of acene-fused porphyrins and 1,10-phenanthroline-fused porphyrins were synthesized and characterized via NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The acene-fused porphyrins exhibit unique optoelectronic properties, most notably they exhibit highly red-shifted absorption bands. The 1,10-phenanthroline-fused porphyrins are of interest for their ability to bond to as variety of metals to form chelation complexes.

The results are connected to the respective phase diagrams and demonstrate that blending makes property manipulation possible. Blends for which the mechanical properties are better than those of pure EPs can be obtained.

This work involves synthesis and characterization of isotropic and anisotropic noble metal nanoparticles for applications ranging from antimicrobial uses to anticancer applications. These nanomaterials are stabilized in genuinely benign biomaterials ranging from polymers to cross linked proteins for targeted cancer treatments. The nanoparticles are found to have tunable optical properties.

Selective Lipid Absorption

An experiment was designed to study in the same animal any preferential absorption of a free fatty acid in the presence of a triglyceride of the same fatty acid. Rats were administered a mixture of free fatty acid and its triglyceride labeled with carbon-13 and carbon-14 respectively. Each isotope in the fed lipid and in the lipid recovered from the gastrointestinal tract was measured. The isotope effect, if any, was studied by administering a mixture of palmitic acid-1-C13 and palmitic acid-1-C14.
