Modelling Land Use Change and Nonpoint Source Pollution Potential Using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System Technology

In this study Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was integrated with remote sensing techniques in order to determine the potential for nonpoint source pollution in the Lake Palestine and Cedar Creek Reservoir watersheds of North Central Texas. The Universal Soil Loss Equation was used to determine soil erosion potential from the watersheds, and export coefficients were used to estimate nutrient loadings into the reservoirs.

A Comparison of Universal Soil Loss Equation Results Using a Remote Sensing/GIS Technique to Results Obtained Using a Field Survey Technique

Digital satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used in conjunction with the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) to model soil erosion potential within watersheds. This study compared erosion estimates calculated by the remote sensing method to results obtained in the field by soil conservationists using conventional methods.

Burgin discusses growing up, joining the CCC in 1934, assignment to a camp at Maydelle, Texas, boxing on his first night in the barracks, transfer to Lindale, projects worked, engineering training, leave and recreation, transfer to Marshall, paperwork, the relationship between CCC workers and local residents, and thoughts on bringing back the CCC for current generations.

This final report describes the activities of the Iowa State Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute (ISMMRRI) at Iowa State University for the period July 1, 1989, to June 30, 1990. Activities include research in mining- and mineral-related areas, education and training of scientists and engineers in these fields, administration of the Institute, and cooperative interactions with industry, government agencies, and other research centers. During this period, ISMMRRI has supported research efforts to: (1) Investigate methods of leaching zinc from sphalerite-containing ores. (2) Study the geochemistry and geology of an Archean gold deposit and of a gold-telluride deposit. (3) Enchance how-quality aggregates for use in construction. (4) Pre-clean coal by triboelectric charging in a fluidized-bed. (5) Characterize the crystal/grain alignment during processing of yttrium-barium-copper-perovskite (1-2-3) superconductors. (5) Study the fluid inclusion properties of a fluorite district. (6) Study the impacts of surface mining on community planning. (7) Assess the hydrophobicity of coal and pyrite for beneficiation. (8) Investigate the use of photoacoustic absorption spectroscopy for monitoring unburnt carbon in the exhaust gas from coal-fired boilers. This report describes the potential environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures associated with the construction and operation of the North Central segment of a DART light rail transit (LRT) system. The North Central Corridor runs from the Dallas Central Business District north to Park Lane, but this document only addresses environmental concerns north of Mockingbird Station. No significant impacts were anticipated.
