Object-Oriented Canopy Gap Extraction from UAV Images Based on Edge Enhancement

Article describes the efficient and accurate identification of canopy gaps is the basis of forest ecosystem research, which is of great significance to further forest monitoring and management. One major limitation of the traditional methods of remote sensing to map canopy gaps is that they cannot finely extract the complex edges of canopy gaps in mountainous areas. The authors proposed an object-oriented classification method that integrates multi-source information.

International Conference on the Role of the Polar Regions in Global Change: Proceedings. Volume 2 (open access)

International Conference on the Role of the Polar Regions in Global Change: Proceedings. Volume 2

The International Conference on the Role of the Polar Regions in Global Change took place on the campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks on June 11--15, 1990. The goal of the conference was to define and summarize the state of knowledge on the role of the polar regions in global change, and to identify gaps in knowledge. To this purpose experts in a wide variety of relevant disciplines were invited to present papers and hold panel discussions. While there are numerous conferences on global change, this conference dealt specifically with the polar regions which occupy key positions in the global system. These two volumes of conference proceedings include papers on (1) detection and monitoring of change; (2) climate variability and climate forcing; (3) ocean, sea ice, and atmosphere interactions and processes; and (4) effects on biota and biological feedbacks; (5) ice sheet, glacier and permafrost responses and feedbacks, (6) paleoenvironmental studies; and, (7) aerosol and trace gases.

Multimodal switching of a redox-active macrocycle (open access)

Multimodal switching of a redox-active macrocycle

This article looks at molecules that can exist in multiple states with the possibility of toggling between those states based on different stimuli. They have potential for use in molecular switching or sensing applications. The coupling of two different oxidation states with two different charge-transfer states within one macrocyclic scaffold delivers up to five different optical outputs. This molecular switching manifold exploits intramolecular coupling of multiple redox active substituents within a single molecule.

Development and use of a switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) transformation pipeline by the BioEnergy Science Center to evaluate plants for reduced cell wall recalcitrance

Article examines the creation of a transformation pipeline (TP) to produce plants with decreased recalcitrance and a laboratory information management system (LIMS) for data compilation from these plants. While many genes accepted into the TP resulted in transgenic switchgrass without modified lignin or biomass content, a group of genes with potential to improve lignocellulosic biofuel yields was identified. Results from transgenic lines targeting xyloglucan and lignin structure provide examples of the types of information available on switchgrass lines produced within BioEnergy Science Center (BESC).
