Interview with Tony Gutierrez, an activist and former county commissioner from from Harlingen, Texas. In his interview, Gutierrez discusses his background, working life, his local political activism, and race relations in Harlingen.

David T. Lopez was born in Laredo, TX. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he became involved as a reporter and editor for the Daily Texan and the Texas Ranger. His involvement in news reporting lead him to work for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, where he reported on Black and Brown efforts in school desegregation. Attracted by Cesar Chavez and United Farm Workers movement, Lopez would participate in the strikes in the Rio Grande Valley and would report on the repressive tactics of the Texas Rangers as a plaintiff in the Medrano v. Allee lawsuit. He eventually got his law degree at South Texas College of Law in Houston and worked as a field representative for the AFL-CIO. Lopez discusses how he served on the HISD school board, the politics of the Huelga School Strike, how he was one of the first lecturers for the University of Houston Center for Mexican American Studies, and police brutality.

Saenz discussed growing up in Robstown and his career as a political consultant.

Linda Morales was born in Uvalde and left the area in 1975 to go to Austin. Her parents encouraged her activism as her mother was vocal and her father was a Teamster. In Austin, she briefly became involved in the local Chicano Movement. Subsequently, she moved to Houston, where she became involved in the LGBT movement. Along with Cristina Martinez, she was condemned a "Wetback Look-a-Like" Contest at a Montrose Bar. This incident and her experiences as a Mexican American Woman made her realize that the White Feminist Movement and the LGBT Movement was not inclusive of Latina/o LGBT issues. In 1989, Morales led a fight against the state of Texas in order to overturn sodomy laws to get HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment to the LGBT Community. Although Morales v. Texas was not successful, it was a first step towards equality prior to Lawrence v. Texas. Morales has also been involved politically, as she was a member of the Mexican American Democrats in Houston. Most recently, Morales has been working as a labor organizer, leading several strikes across the state of Texas.

Interview with Lorena Andrade, civil rights and labor activist from El Paso, Texas. Ms. Andrade was born in Los Angeles, California and attended the University of Minnesota, where she became involved with Chicano activism. In El Paso, she has been an advocate for labor and founded the organization La Mujer Obrera, The Working Woman, to support women affected by NAFTA.

Cavasos discussed his role as a principal during Cisneros/desegregation in Corpus Christi

Gene Collins was born and raised in Odessa, Texas. He attended Abilene Christian University, where he was a campus and community civil rights organizer. He completed his college education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Collins is now a local businessman and minister in Odessa, Texas. He has been president of the Odessa NAACP for over 15 years, and co-chair for environmental justice for the statewide NAACP. He helped lead several efforts toward environmental justice in and outside Odessa.

Mr. Figueroa recounted his role as a Robstown school board member during 1969 walkouts.

Mr. Valdez grew up in Del Rio, but also spent time in California and San Antonio. While attending high school in Del Rio, he and his rock band were involved in the Palm Sunday rally. He was later drafted into the military and sent to Vietnam. Mr. Vasquez attended A&I, where he honed his art and took part in activism. Throughout the interview, Mr. Valdez talks about the role of art (visual arts and music) in Chicano activism.

Interview with Ricardo De Anda, a civil rights attorney from Laredo, Texas. In his interview, he discusses his early life and education, political activism, the Chicano movement, Black Panthers, and working on the Ramsey Muniz campaign. He also talks about his work with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and legal cases related to school segregation.

Interview with Trinidad "Trini" Garza, a civic leader and businessman from Dallas, Texas. In the interview, Garza discusses his early life, education, migrant work, military service, studying engineering at Texas A&M, his community service and activism in Dallas, and his work on the school board.

Mr. Galvan shares his personal history as a musician and store owner in Corpus Christi.

Juan Tejeda is the co-founder and producer of the Guadalupe Cultural Center's annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio. In his interview he discusses, growing up on the Southside of San Antonio, Mexican American Studies, and educational equality.

Mr. Barrera grew up in and around Del Rio, Texas. His father was a sheep sheerer. Barrera talked about the importance of education to his parents and learning "proper" Spanish. He also talked about the San Felipe barrio and the schools. Later he moved out of the barrio into a more mixed community. He talked about the disparity in sporting equipment between Del Rio ISD & San Felipe. He also talked about teaching drama in Del Rio, the march in 1969, and the impact of school consolidation in 1971. He also mentioned discrimination his drama students experienced during a UIL meet where they were the better team but the Anglo judges gave the win to another team.

Macario Ramirez was born in 1937 in San Antonio. His family were migrant farm workers and traveled to the Midwest every year. He was in the military from 1956-59. Upon his return from the war, he gets involved in War on Poverty programs. Mr. Ramirez worked in Labor Training Programs in San Antonio, which eventually leads him to move to D.C. and work with a Man Power Training Program through the Department of Labor. He arrives in Houston and founded Casa Ramirez, a space that celebrate and provides culture and folklore to the Mexican American community of Houston.

Mr. Rivera discussed role as Corpus Christi school administrator.

Mario spoke about growing up in La Pryor, Texas. He remembered his dad working in the Blewett mines near Uvalde; he talks a bit about the culture there because it was a company town. He talked about the discrimination his father felt in the mines and how his dad organized for union representation in the mine. His family moved to Uvalde in the 1950s. He talked about the segregated schooling in Uvalde--separate schools for ethnic Mexicans and African Americans. He talked about the reprimands he would receive for speaking Spanish in school. He also spoke about the importance of education to his family. Cruz left Uvalde for San Antonio to pursue a nursing degree/career but he retired in Uvalde later in life.

Jessie Rangel was born in Big Lake, Texas. After working in Lubbock, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico, he joined the Marine Core during the 1960s. He saw action in Vietnam, and upon returning to Lubbock, enrolled in Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech University, he was part of MEChA and the larger Chicano Movement. Rangel graduated with a degree in political science. After graduation, he obtain an administration job at Texas Tech University and continued participating in social justice movements. Rangel was a founding member of TACHE.

Interview with Wayne Sadberry, a curator at the Brazos Valley African-American Museum from Prairie View, Texas. Sadberry discusses his early life, family background, and living under Jim Crow segregation. Sadberry also discusses his education at St. Emma Military Academy in Powhatan, Virginia and service in the Air Force. He also discusses working as a research assistant on a grant project to Antarctica while a graduate student at Texas A&M.

Gloria Rubac was born in Oklahoma, TX. in 1946. After witnessing racial discrimination in Oklahoma throughout her youth, Rubac traveled to Houston in 1968 to teach in the Northforest School District. She became involved in the John Brown Revolutionary League, a radical white youth organization that was a part of a Rainbow Coalition with the People's Party II. Wanting to become more active in supporting Brown and Black organizations, Rubac joined the Huelga School movement as a teacher and protestor. She talks about her succeeding involvement in supporting the Chicana/o Moratorium, the Mexican American Youth Organization, the People's Party II, the Worker's World, and the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement, which she has dedicated her life to. Rubac also discusses inter-racial solidarity as well as discrimination in Houston, particularly police brutality as it relates to the assassination of Carl Hampton, the Jose Campos Torres incident, and the Moody Park Rebellion.

Urdy talks about his life, politics, his time at Prairie View and student activism there; going to University of Texas as a black graduate student.

Alice E. Valdez was born in El Paso, and grew up in a middle class, Anglo and Mexican American community. She discusses her father's WWII experience to detail. Ms. Valdez was involved in the arts from an early age through church groups and in school activities. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso where she was part of the band and graduated with a degree in music. She recalled the 1966 Texas Western College (name prior to UTEP) NCAA Basketball Championship during her college experience. Upon graduation, Ms. Valdez moved with her husband to Atlanta for his military service. She moved to Houston in 1971. Due to her arts background, she became involved in creating arts programs for children and subsequently founded the Multicultural Education Counseling through the Arts Center, (MECA).

Interview with Robert Person, an educator from Bryan, Texas. In the interview, Person discusses higher education at Texas Southern University, activism at TSU, including the 1967 riot, segregation in Bryan, community activism, school integration, and race relations.
